Converse of Palmer, Mass., finds one or two redeeming features in having a furnace in his cellar. The furnace renders the cellar a poor storage for vegetables, so he bas taken to raising rhubarb. LEGISLATURE ADJOURNS Both Houses Finished Their Work on Saturday Night and Adjiurned Sine Die. Reports Took Senate's Time. The Senate had three.sessions Sat urday, one in the morning, one in the ! afternoon and one at night. The mouing session was taken up in to ;i large extent by the reports of i-conference and free conference com mittees. A conference committee reported the bill to buy for the Citidal the i Charleston guard house, suggesting that the first payment, be made pu j March 1. 1907. This Avas adopted' by the Senate. In the afternoon au executive ses sion was held al which the appoint ments recommended by the various county delegations and* sent up by the governor were confirmed. The free conference committee on the solicitors' salary recommended next January as the time lo take ef fect and this Was adopted-. At thc night session there was little of importance. Senator Mai'shall called up his resolution to continue the State House litigation and spoke for it. Senator W. J. Johnson of Fairfield, who was warned of con tempt of court during thc trial last spring, spoke against the resolution. Senator Raysor took the view that the attorneys should decide for them selves without resolution to direct them whether or not they should con tinu?. The original agreement was that they should receive 25 per cent, cf the amount recovered. A vote of 17 to 5 killed the resolution. The usual resolutions were passed with reference to the officers> the em ployes and the press. President Sloan, President Pro Tem Manning and Clerk Hemphill received very conner oentaryre^ojtarioji^^ "Resolved that on the day of ad journment the senate desires to place on record its high appreciation of the diligent and efficent services, which have been rendered in expediting leg islation by "its- president, the Hon. John T. Sloan. "Resolved, further, That the senate hereby express its appreciation of the uniform courtesy and unvarying kind ness which has been exhibited by our esteemed president, who has so faith fully and impartially discharged the delicate duties as the presiding head of this body." President Sloan was also very high ly complimented by being presented, by unanimous vote of the senate, with the robe he has worn "so worthily" for four years. In connection-with thc resolution to C?en. R. H.; Hemphill, the clerk, it might he said that it was not until he became clerk that such resolutions were passed. He has filled the olfice for" .12 consecutive sessions and no more conscientious and capable officer could be selected or one who is more faraaliar milli the work. His courtesy and assistance to thc senators, officers cud to the newspaper men have made him famous and everbody who is a habitue of the senate knows and loves the general. By 9:30 o'clock there was practi cally nothing for the senate to do and the senators who remained sat about and gaped at the vacant chairs. At one time it was thought that it would be a good thing to adjourn until Sunday morning, but precedent tri umphed over discomfort and the body determined to sit it out. During the evening many acts were ratified.. In the Honse. Thc two houses of the general as sembly by some chance agreed upon nu hour for holding the elections to nil vacancies which will soon exist in the personnel of the management of the Slate dispensary. There had been filibustering over the proposition for a day or two and finally it was decid ed to dispose of the matter at noon Saturday. The result as to the election of a cahirman of thc board of directors of the State dispensary was a great sur prise. Mr. H. H. Evans, the incum bent, generally regarded as one of the ernst popular men in the State, was defeated by Mr. J. M. Rawlinson of Richland county, thc vote being 103 to 30. If all of thc absentees had been present lo vole the ratio of dif ference in the votes fight not have been affected at all. This was quite a surprise to every one, for although it was known that the incumbent was subject to a severe cross-fire, it was believed his personal popularit) would have given- him a good start in the race. Mr. W. 0. Tatum was reelected commissioner of the State dispensary und Maj. John Black, formerly of Collet on-, and Mr. Joe B. Wylie of Richburg, Chester county, were elect ed to succeed Messrs. Boykin and Towill, who were not candidates for reelection. At 12 o'clock the two houses mel in joint assembly to elect a commis sioner and the three member:? of the board of directors of thc State dis pensary. Senatr Raysor nominated Mr. W C. Tatum. This was seconded by Mr. J. B. Watson of Anderson, who some time ago was spoken of as a candidate against Mr. Tatum-although '< Mi. tson himself never announced his ' Jacy. Make the suds in a tub with any good white snap, having the water hot. Dissolve in it a tablespoonful of borax. Run threads around soiled spots on the blanket so that they may bo found after they are wet. Rinse thc blankets up and down vigorously, rubbing only the marked spots. Never rub soap direct ly on them. Prepare another hot suds with borax and put the blankets in it. Rinse up and down for several minutes, then rinse in clear hot wat er, softened with borax. In a recent report the dispensary investigating committee recommends that.the State cancel all orders the dispensary had ahead with the Caro lina Glass Company. These amount to 300 cars, the total value of which is over $700,000. The report reads: "The committee appointed to inves tigate the dispensary respectfully re port to the General Assembly that in the course of their investigation they find that the contracts between* the Carolina Glass Company and the dispensary are in a very unsatisfac tory condition, that higher prices are l-cing charged for glass than the agreement calls for, that there has been a lack of competition in bidding that glass has been sold to the dis pensary without written contract, and thal there are contracts outstand-j ing with said company for about 300 ears of glass, an unreasonable and excessive qnnntity. the contracts for which, as your committee believes, have been awarded at excessive price. Both boys are about 16 3'ears of age. There was but oue eye wit ness to the killing. Will Holley, a companion of Dennis Holley, who says the two boys were arguing when suddenly Dermis Holley stab bed the House boy in the chest with a knife. The two Holleys i-aii away and Rouse walked 200 yards and fell dead: A physician has stated that the knife ??enetrat?d Rouse's heart. Officer Weatherford arrested the Holleys at the Whitney stables. The blody knife was found in Dennis Holley's pocket; Officer Weatheford said to Dennis Holley: "Well, the boy is dead;" Holley replied: "Oh, you are kidding me." T. Arnold, J. C. Brawley and Frank I. Martin. Union Mills Bankrupt. Charleston, S. C., Special-The Un ion Mills, of Union, S. C., were ad judged bankrupt in the United States District Court. E. W. Hughes was appointed referee to take testimony. The mills will continue operation by agreement with the Union Cotton Mills Company, of Maine. A trustee will be appointed March 10. Wise, reported that about two-thirds of the sum of money needed for ex penses had already been raised.
