J. L. MIMS, - - - ED?TOfc TERMS; ONE YEAR il 50 t SIX MONTHS 75 -WEDNESDAY., FEB. 21, 1906 r I will govern ; say life and thoughts as if the whole'world were to nee the one and read'the - 1 other, for what does it signify to - make anything a secret, to my neighbor, when to God, who is the searcher of oar hearts, all our privacies are open?-SENE CA. > The -Honorable Hub Evan* sought vindication and endorse ment of his administration xy re elev, ion but suffered ignominious defeat. Out of 136 ballots cast ht received only 33. Mr. Ira C. Carson who recently purchased the ..Mouitor has also purchased the News and will con solidate the.two under' the name -of Thw Monitor-News. Succees to him in his new and larger under taking. Senator Tillman's appearance before the dispensary investiga ting committee was somewhat disappointing. His testimony-or . rather, speech-so far as revealing j anything now, was scarcely wort his passage from Washington to Columbia. A good woman who has been fettere di?) with matrimonial bonds for a number of years hail suggested to us that the White House bride will probably during | the honeymoon address her hus band as Nicholas, later as Nick, and still later aB "Old Nick." The only change in the dis pensary situation was the election of an entirely new board of di rectors.- The House by a large majority desired to abolish I he a tate dispensary but the Senate refused to concur. The Senate wanted to reform and patch up the By stem in order to purify it but the House rejected the idea of a "purified" dispensary. Thirteen will not any longer be ''regarded as an unlucky number. M?BB Roosevelt rt jected Mr. Long worth twelve timeB but when he "popped the question" the thir teenth time she accepted bim. Where is the old bachelor who will say that thirteen did not carry-w^-fl the frpaj. m? One needs no stronger ?Tornen t ta ?stablish the wisdom 'of Bi ennial sessions than tho doings of thojecent legislature. Two weeks consumed with dispensary legisla tion with no results. Nearly 1400 bills were introduced when proba bly not one-tenth of them were actually needed. . Why make the dispensary a direct issue in the next campaign? By a majority the people some years ago asked for prohibition and were . denied it. They also favored bi-ennial sessions but the legislature refused to make pro vision fer the change. Wnat as surance then have the people that th e institution would be abolished obould they vote "no dispensary" next summer. _ * The newspapers throughout the State are boasting of the prosperi ty of the people in their respect . ive counties, and it makes us feel good to hear of it. However, there will be more prosperity in the State when our people eat more South .Carolina raised biscuit, corn-pone, pork, bacon and beef, and it will be a prosperity based j . on the most solid foundation. i Anderson Intelligencer. Everyone must admit the truth I .? the foregoing, yet how few . there are whose plans for the year ? will be influenced thereby. Sooner or later the land owners . of the South will, have to take hold of the farm labor question and regulate it. All that is needed to remedy the difficulty is unity of action on the part of the far mers. The South is the only place that we know of where the land owners are at the mercy of the : labor they employ.-Oraugeburg Times and Democrat. Just as our contemporary saye, "unity of action on the part of 'the farmers" is all that is needod to solve the vexatious labor prob lem, but this one thing needful will always be a dream, an ideal never to be realized. The condi-1 lions are roo complex and varied, being different in every communi ty. Some own their farms, others do not; some are independent, others dependent ; some have one system, others another; Borneare generous and magnanimous, others close and selfish. Furthei-, more, wages are not un:form, and labor bas been trained differently in different sections. The only solution that will ever come will be for every farmer to conduct his affairs as best he can under existing conditions, r ^U.nity of action", as applied to farmers and the labor problem,! will come with the millennium, if ?tall. We wish these youug people a long and happy life. Mr. Ernest Quarles has pur chased from Mr. James Bodia the -'Red Hill store" and will take possession of same.this fall. We bid Ernest a hearty welcome to our towu. Mr. Bodie has not given out his future plans, bat we hope he will remain in our town. * Judging from the way our peo ple talk there will be a large acreage planted in cotton this year. The graiu crop promises to be-very fine. Messrs. James Strother and JameB Bodie have both purchased uew two boree wagons. Mr. Joe Wilson had the mis fortune of having his ankle sprained very badly last week. He was at work at his saw mill and a log rolled against his foot with the above result. Master Johnnie Smith had his foot scalded with hot water last Monday. Johnnie* has suffered great pain for several days. Sunday afternoon was so warm, many of the.lads andlasBPS were out walking. Mr. Wallace Holston and bis prettj bride worshipped at Red Hill yesterday. Misa Maggie Joue6 is visiting friends and relatives near Bethany this week.
