But for the work of the in vestigating committee the con tents of this letter would never have been given to the public. Whenever tho colored man gets from behind the plow and leaves th? farm to seek au easy berth in form of less arduous labor he usually gets in trouble. Not one of her scores of gowns or hats were imported from Paris or other foreign centres of fashion. Think of how much more prosperous every nation, every community, would be were the home markets patronized. Give this a local application: Cut out the catalog houses aud pat ronize home merchants. Thus far the legislature, which will probably adjourn in less than a week, has not ev en discussed the problem of taxation. In view of the efforts of the Comptroller General to have proper ty assessed at its full value, should the legi ? lature make no provision for a . reduction ot the levy the situation will be further complicated. An increase in taxes, resulting from an increase in assessments with out a* corresponding decrease in the levy, would amount almost to confiscation. Just what the out come will be is yet to be seen. According to the papers, no in crease is being made in assess ments in some counties while in others the value at which proper ty is returned has been slightly raised. In the matter of damage suits new causes of action or claims upon which suits are based arise almost daily. A cotton mill opera tive in Greenville has sued the company because he slipped upon a banana peel in the mill and fell. Another asks for damages f jr injuries sustained while operating a certain piece of machinery, al leging that he was "green" and in experienced and should not have been allowed to operate said machine. While we believe thal corporations, just as individuals, should be held to strict acount ability? yet we believe also in their being justly dealt with. The Proceedings of The Meeting as Officially- Recoi And Reported by The Se ci tary. A mass meeting was held court house ou February the 1906, for the purpose of hf the report of the committee < appointed at a previous/ me as to the feasibility of boi the towu of Eclgefield for th' pose of establishing water and an electric plant. Col. KV Bailey waB made cbairra the meeting and Mr. Wm. P houn secretary. Mr. John C. Sheppard as c man of the committee of ten its rfiport which was to effect the committee had made ai vestigation as thoroughly could. He then rpad a report i by Mr. C. C. Wilson who been hero and investigated matter. The report of Mr. W is made a part of the minut the meeting. Mr. M. P. Wells was callei to state the amouut of tax property of our town, and to the amount of the bonded ind edn?BS as be had -investigated matter.
