V'?NE YEAR $1.50 iS^S?lX MONTHS 75 WEDNESDAY, NOV. 1, 1905. ?... ,Q.conee county should be accord ' ' ed the first place on the honor roll, having voled out the dispensary by a majority of about 10 to 1. The sales at thr, dispensary on $? ^Saturday last amounted to $360. Think of how much better it would have been bad this umountbeeu expended for dry goods, shoos, ' 'clothing and groceries. A great many homes would have been made happier. New Orleans will eoon repair the damage to he r population that was made by yellow fever. In that city during o ne day last week thirty-six births were officially re .-, corded. Edgefield seemed to be in the lead a fpw morths ago but * we-are now forced to surre nder the palm to New Orleans. The bank at Saluda, notwith ^..v tandil g th e fad that it is Iwelve milts ii?m a railroad, is reaping ? its.sJ^fe of prosperity. At the ^secona annual' meeting of the stockholders a few days ago an eight por cent dividend waB de clared and a balance added to the surplus fund. This epeaks well for the manage men I; - Pjesid(ot Roosevelt's tour c; v?he scuth has enabled him to ge\ clcEer to the heartB of the south-] ern people than anything else tbail he bas said or done since he he4 came the nation's chief executives Now that they know and under^ stand him better the people ol this section will not be so prone to question the Presideui's mo t ives and criticise his official actf j . What is the matter with thej erstwhile, fair city of Augusta ?? She seems to be making fcu unen viable reputation for herself inj the matter of granting divorces. In the E?perior court thirty di vorce cases were acted upon in ajj single day last week. We wonderj -.if any of these were Carolin! couples who went to Georgia to bi restored to a state ot "singlej blessedness", so called. mee the severe freeze ol the early?Siftg^ies has lhere beera so large a crop ofTP?Juji??i 'umjgej 11? is now to be found upon the Trees.- The yield of 1905 is esti mated to be about 1,250,000 boxes. A large portion of the crop has already been sold on the trees on a basis of $1 per box. That the price of the golden fruit will this year be within the reach of the ; newspaper man is a pleasing thought. To-day being November the 1st j -theman who delights in a day's sport in tho woods can shoulder bis gun and go after the featheied tribe without violating the law. Tho merchants who are heavily stocked with "shot and shell," as well as the gunners, delight that the huntiug season has arrived The old paitridgo that has been leathered by many amateur sports men will at the crack of the gun ! betake himself to the thickest of the forest for safety. How many teachers throughout the county are going to observe c Arbor Day, Friday the 3rd day of | November ? State Superintendent of Education O. B. Marti u is en deavoring to get the schools to ob serve the day properly by planting) trees upon the grounds and in otbur public places. With very little trouble or expense the bleak and barreu grounds that surround many of the Behool houses in this .county could be rendered very at tractive. Trees planted now would within a few short, years afford v dense shade, making more com fortable the play ground for the children. We hope to hoar that a goodly number of those who teach in the public school of the county have observed Arbor Day. .The season for the appearance of the abominable carnival com panies is upon us. Dates have already been made by thom in some of the small towns. Should an advance agent of any of these companies make application for a license to theEdgefield town coun cil we hope that it will be prompt ly refused. Ve;y few small towns that allow them to come within their gates one time ever give them permission again. These J attrac'ions are extremely demora lizing, from a business standpoint j as well as otherwise. Large crowds are drawn to a town by them but -the money is speut on the cheap shows and get-rich-quick schemes instead of for household necessi ties. Should application for license be made the couueii cught fijst to obtain an expression from the citizens before grauting it. The wide-awake, progressive farmer who has gotten out of tho )ld rut and has adopted modern, scientific methods instead, is now breaking deep and subsoiling his lands. Having harvested the crops of 1905 the preparation for 1906 should now begin by providiug a store-house for the winter's rains, in ord<r that the tender plants may draw upon this reserve fund during the drought of next Bum mer. "Plough deep while slug gards sleep and you'll make plenty of cern to soiland to keep." The damage suit industry is assuming collossal proportions. Probably two-thirds of the cases that are tried in the civil courts uow-a-days are damage suits of one form or another. Some of them unquestionably are cases that are not founded upon justice. By ordering a verdict for the defen dant in an unjust suit for damages, Judge BJ awley of the United State s court set and example a few days ago" that should not pass unheed ed by some of the lower tribunals. A station agent of the Southern Railway brought suit to recover damagf'S for injuries sustained by being knocked from the track by the pilot of au ebgine. It having been clearly proven that the plain tiff carelessly walked across the track while a train was approach ing, the judged ruled that he was guilty of contributory negligence, and ordered the jury to find a verdict for the defendant com pany. 4181 419 -*?r~~B ?^Xownesr 420 W H (?s, . , 421 Walker Evans k Cogswell Company, 422 W H Ouzts, 423 B E Nicholson, 424 W H Ouzts, 425 J D Allen, 426 Tom Dukes, 427 Mat Weaver, 428 John Tipster, 429 John Scurry, 430 Mrs J R Scurry, 431 Turner Bland, 432 J T Pattison, 433 P W Cheatham, 434 Wm A Byrd, 435 J S Bush, 436 G P Cobb, 437 W Hading, 438 R E Harliug, 439 J G Mobley, 440 N C Long, 441 Priuce Adams, 442 E B Mathis, 443 W S G Heath, 444 N L Bruuson, 445 J B Haltiwanger, 446 Perrv Brown, 447 R L'Boddie, 448 H W Jackson, 449 H F Cooper, 450 J O Scott, 451 H L Bunch, 452 W W Miller, 453 T E Miller, 454 E W Samuels, 455 A T Covar, 456 Edgefie?d Mer.
