Miss Lizzie Roper, a very popu lar and attractive young lady of Trenton, was the guest of Misses Sue and Sallie Collett on Satur day last. Handsome young Gus Merriman left on Thursday for Waynesboro, Ga., to accept a position as sales man in the large drug store of his uncle, Mr. H. H. Stembridge. What would kill a white man oftentimes contributes to the physical woll-being of the colored man. A few dayB ago a hard-working colorfd man, who is far above the average in intel ligence aud character, told us of the delight that he took in his work whun the sun was hot. Dur iug some of the hottest days we have had this year he would throw aside his bat and plow and sing as happily as did the birds in the near-by trees. Think of a man working for hours with bared head out in the broiling Bun that was almost hot enough to cook an figg. Under such conditions a white man would have fallen stone dead before he had plowed half dozen rounds. A Negro Boy Killed. On Sunday afternoon last Mag istrate N. L. Bruii8on received a telegram stating that a negro boy had been shot east of Philippi, near the Aiken line. He and Dr. J. H. Carmichael wen* at once to hold the inquest. According to the testimouy given a negro boy about 10 years of age was shot with a pistol, seemingly ^without any provocation, by a upgro lad, who made his escape, but was ar rested in Columbia on Monday. His Fame Has Gone Abroad. The fame of Dr. Luther Jones as a very skilled veterinarian has gone abroad. On Saturday last be was Bummoued to Barnwell to attend a very fine horse of Con gressman J. 0. Patterson. Recent ly Mr. Patterson purchased a handsome pair of carriage horses. One of them .stuck a nail in its foot about two weeks ago. It had been treated without having the nail extracted, but daily the foot became more iuflam. d. Dr. Jones extracted the nail, dressed the wounded foot and the animal will soon be all right. Dr. Jones has several times within the last few months been called to Augusta in consultation over complicated diseases. No higher compliment could be paid Edgefield's veteri narian. TJ? map gives two lines on the Aikoj boundary : the one psaecribed the statutes which begins af point northeast of Johnston at runs direct to the mouth of F? creels and another from the pon above Johnston to a point on tl Savaunah river three quarters a mile above Fox creek. The latter line has been ?J gardedas tobe the correct bouin ry between Aiken and Edgefif counties but as a matter of fri it ?B not the correct line. Fucceasful summer school for ttncberp, viewed from every standpoint, that has evei been held in our county is now being conducted at. the college. Superintendent of Education Byrd, the county board of educa tion, and the instructors, Col. P. N. K. Bailey and Hou. J. P. Bean, spared no efforts to create a deep interest in the school among the teachers throughout the j county. How well thev have suc ceeded is shown by the enroll ment, which on the opening day was twenty-eight, with probably a dozen others yet to come. Where as the attendance heretofore has been about twenty. The opening exercises in the college chapel on Monday morning were made ex ceedingly interesting by the abort informal talks of Mr. W. A. Byrd, Coi. F. N, K. Bailey, Hon. J, P. Bean, Rov. C. E. Burts and Prof. J. F. Long. A great number who are in at tendance will board at the college, and while some time will be spent in pleasant social intercourse,yet it will be a month of hard work to those- who have come to better I equip themselves for teaching. Col. Bailey and Mr. Bean, both of j whom are educators of distinguish ed ability, will do their utmost to make the month's work of in calculable and lasting benefit toi their pupils.
