The ladies who compose the Edgefield Literary Club have .suc ceeded in rendering the public library more popular. On Tuesday afternoon of last week they held au informal reception iu the cozy little library room. Delightful ice tea and dainty little cakes were served to the patrons of the libra ry who called between the hoars of five and Heven o'clock. This little innovation was BO heartily enjoyed that the members of the Edgefield Literary Club purpose holding these informal receptions at regular intervals. Nothiug will be left undone by these good wo men tbat will cause the library to grow in power, usefulness and in the affections of the people of the community. Mr. Sol P. McCall, who former ly resided in Greenville, Ala., de livered a very forceful and con vincing temperance lecture upon the streets of Edgefield on Mon day afternoon. He came expecting to a-.dress an audience in the court house but the commence ment exercises prevented his doing so. He has been wrecked financially, socially, physically, and has had his once happy home destroyed by liquor. Now he is touring the couutry warning peo ple against the evil. Covar, Edgrfidd's Pinkerton, went to Augusta sever al days ago to Bearcb for a fugi tive from justice, and as he went to hoard the train to roturn on Sunday afternoon last his pistol fell from his pocket and discharg ed when it struck the paved street. -TheJmil entered his leg just above tbe^lnkle, inflicting a painful but not serious wound. No bones were broken. Mr. Covar was taken at' once to the city hospital where the wound received the besl of atten tion. He came Lome on .Monday afternoon. Very Prompt Settlement. The house in which Mrs. C. J. Ashley resided was burned on May tbe 1st. Pbe adjuster for the company came to Edgefield on'May the 5th, and the very day, May 16th, that his repoit was reciived by Special Agent F. C. Calkins, of Atlrnt?, tho latter forwarded a check for $900, the full amount of the policy. We are indebted to the company for so prompt a settlement, also to Meg era. C. A. Griffin'& Co., who repre sent this large company in Edge field, for valuable assistance BO cheerfully rendered. A Very Tragic Death t Our town was horror stricken by the intelligence of the very tragic death of Mr. Jeter W. Crim on Thursday last. Thia good man-we say good man because he was one of the best citizens of the town of Johnston-bad been plowing all day and about sun down rode home as usual, sitting sideways upon hie horse. The ani mal gave a sudden bound or leap which caused Mr. Crim to fall, and becoming entangled m the plow gear he was dragged for a quarter of a mile, with the horse going at a rapid gate. The fright ened animal was stopped near Mr. Crim's house and tLe unfortunate man was rescued or disentangled but he had been so seriously in jured that he died within a half an hour, never regaining con sciousness. The deceased was a Confederate veteran and an active member of the Johnston Baptist ireh. Haiti" wanger, entitled "Auf Wieder sehen Club," of which the follow ing is an excerpt: "Any way the othor'club ( meaning the Edgefield Literary club) has the advantage of us. It has two newspapers tb print its articles, as the editor of the Chronicle is too courteous to refuse them a voice iu his columns, whereas all articles from the Auf Wiedersehen club to the Edgefield Advertiser arrive not only too late for the week they aro sent, but the next week also." The writer of the foregoing has. done this newspaper an Tujuetice." From fbe statement above quoted the public has very naturally in ferred that the Auf Wiederseheu Club has repeatedly sent tho Ad vertiser articles for publication and thal we have refused to pub-i lish them. Such is not the case. Here are the facts : There has been only one article received at this office for publication from the Auf Wiedersehen Club. That ar ticle or notice was sent by Mrs. J. B. Haltiwanger and was intend ed for the issue of April 5th. It,' along with' several communica tions aud advertisements, was re ceived too late to appear in that issue, for the reason that the Ad vertiser was published a day earlier that week to enable the editor to attend tboB. Y. P. U. convention in Charleston, having left for Charleston on the noon train of Tuesday, April 4th. Airs. Haltiwanger has Faid that their articles reach this office "not ou ly too late for tho week they are sent, but tho next week also." The rf sou why the notice in question, which was intended for the iseue of April 5th, did not appear "the next week," the issue of April 12th, is this : It directed attention in part to an entertainment to be given by the new club on Friday, April 7th, on tho lawn of Mrs. John R. Tompkins, at which ice cream was to have been sold, by the members of the club. The en tertainment was to have been held on April the 7tb(notice the dates, ploase)aDd the next i9sue of the Advertiser was not published un til April the 12th, five days later. Thus it is shawn why this, the only notice that has been received at this office, was not published the week it .was sent and why it was not published "the next week." Furthermore, the first time we saw Mrs. Haltiwangei after the notice was received we told her io perso J why it was not published. From the foregoing it is obvi ous that an injustice has benn done the Advertiser and its editor by the erroneous impression tnat was created, hence we have deem ed it our duty to set ourselves right before the public by mak ing this explanation.
