Blakck returned several days azo from the hospital in Augusta wliBre she underwent a rurJcal operation which nae proved io be very successful. She is spc-di'ly recovering and will in a vit ry ??hort tiun be fully restored to her accustomed strength and vigor. This intelligence will cause grer.t rejoicing among Mrs. Bla luck's friends who have been deep ly concerned about har. Are your buggy or wagon har ness bardsnd dry, ready to break unless bandied carefully? Then, call at the Lynch drug stoie aud purchase a box of haruess grease. It is something new and unexcell ed by auythiug hitherto placed upon the market. One application to your harness will give them a new lease on life and make them appear as though th.<y were frosh from tho beuch of the makers. Sweei potatoes have been selling readily on this market at one dol lat per bushel. Besides shipping several hundred bushels last week to other markets, Mr. Mark Toney sent two wagons loaded with po tatoes to Edgefield that were very quickly disposed of. Even small, pig-tail, "stringy" potatoes were eagerly sought after. This should encourage farmeis to grow more of them. Like cotton, there is al ways a steady demand for pota toes at good prices. Mr. C. A. Long, who, whether it be in mid-winter or mid-sum mer, early spricg or late autumn, alway? has something to sell, was .supplying the Edgefield house wives with teuder salads, mustard, oui ?tis. lettuce and several varie ties of sweet potatoes on Saturday last. If you have no gard? u or if it is late make your wants known to Mr. Long who will deliver at your door whatever you need. And, too, his measures are always heaped up and tunning over. I., we mean-should not be discouraged or caBt down by the defeat in the recent contests in Columbia and Newberry. No team is always victorious. There is not a nine in the state com posed of better material than thal of the S. C. CI. Only one hing is lacking.an additional or supple mentary pitcher. At an early day there will be other contests on the Edgefield diamond that are eager ly looked forward to. Our embroideries are the tala of the town. Don't fail to see them before you purchase. C. E. MAY. The erroneous announcement to the effect that the salary of the coroner of this county hi-d been raised to $700 by tho legislature caused anathemas to be s' wered upon the members of the E afield delegation to the general assembly by some tax payers. As a matter of fact there was no increase in the coroner's salary. He will re ceive only $125 per annum as heretofore. The salaries of magis trates ware raised $25; the su pervisor's salary increased from $600 to $700, and that of superin tendent of education from $500 to $600. t/To the delight of many greatly annoyed, longsufferiug, forbearing residents of Edgefield, the pesky boys with their guns and the per secuted robins have agreed upon terms of peace. The latter have mated and have hied away to the forest fastnesses to multiply and recruit their rankB, promising to return again after a twelvemonth. In view of this promise hostilities have ceased, and young America bas lain down his rocks, sling shot, air gun, parlor ri?e, single and double barreled gun, etc. And there is great rejoicing, especially throughout Buncombe, over the departure of robin redbreast and the change of occupation 'of the pesky boys. The series of revival services at our Methodist church closed on Sunday evening last. Rev. Mr. Turnipseed declared the whole council of God in the twelve ear nest, forceful, soul-stirrirg,heart searching sermons, and the efforts of this faithful servant-have not been without resulta. Sinners were turned from the error of their way aud professing Christ ians were quickeued and made to reconsecrate themselves. The en tire community, legardless of church affiliation, entered hearti ly into the meeting. The follow ing persons united with the Metho dist church: Misses Mattie Car michael and Maggie May Mcma nus, and Masters Allen Samuel, William Ouzts and James Mirna Jr. Mastpr Sterling Merriman pre sented himself for membership in the Baptist church. EASTER PHOTOGRAPHS : Have just received beautiful cards for Easter Photographs. Some thing new. Call and see them. R. H. HIMS. The members of the Woman's Mission society of our Baptist church have iuvited Rev. J. Hart well Edwards, the pastor of the Baptist church at Ridge Spring, to preach the anniversary sermon before the society on Sunday next. We trust that Rev. Mr. Edwards, who is a deeply pious, scholarly gentleman, will be greeted by a large congregation at eleven o'clock on Sunday morning. A collection-a self-denial offering will be taken at this service for the cause of home missions. For some years it has been the custom of the ladies to put forth a spe cial effort at this season for the spreading of the gospel in the waste place of the heme land. On Sunday morning Rev. C. E. Burts will fill the pulpit of the Rdv. J. Hartwell Edwards. The B. Y.P. U. Convention. The state convention of the Baptist Young People's Union will be held at the Citadel Square church, Charleston, beginning the 4th of April aud lasting through the 7th. These aunual gatherings are always thoroughly eujoyed- by all who attend them. Besides the great benefit derived from the gospel meetings of the convention, at which very able sermons and addreeses are delivered by the foremost men of the denomination the social feature is exceedingly pleasant. An opportunity is afford ed-for the Christian young people to come together from every sec tion of the state and mingle to gether iu social intercourse. The Convention will doubtlessly be largely atteuded, for it does not require much persuasion to induce one to visit the quaint old city of Charleston at this season of the year. The puople of South Caroli na's metropolis know how to en tertain their friends and guasts royally. The Edgefield union wi!' probably be represented by Rev. C. E. Burts, Mrs. W. S. Cogburn, Miss Ruth Cogburn, Miss Effie Sheppard, Col. and Mrs. F. N. K. Bailey, Misses Ellamays Allen, Kellah Fair, Virginia Addison. Genie Brunson and Mr. J. L. Mime. All work receives my personal atten tion. E- WALTER SAMUEL. Bauks Make Good Showing. Elsewhere in this issue we pub lish the annual statements of the two banks that are tho pride ot Edgefield, the bulwarks of our town and vicinity from a finan cial and commercial standpoint. These instituticns have stood by tho farmers in their struggle to maintain the price of cotton. The combined loans of the banks amount to more tbau four hun dred thousand dollars, which shows that they turned a deaf ear to no one wbo offered banka ble paper, borrowing mouey to lend to the farmers when their funds become exhausted. The handsome dividends that are paid to the stockholders, thu increasing surplus funds, the steady growth jin tbe volume of their business show that the Edgefield banks are cautiously, conservatively, dis creetly managed, and upon their splendid showing the officers are to' be congratulated. Fat is of great account to a baby ; that is why babies are fat. If your bab}^ is scrawny, Scott's Emulsion is what he wants. The healthy baby stores as fat what it does not need immediately for bone and muscle. Fat babies are happy ; they do not cry ; they are rich ; their fat is laid up for time of need. They are happy because they are comfortable. The fat sur rounds their little nerves and cushions them. When they are scrawny those nerves are hurt at every ungentle touch.
