The Russians are not effering enough resistance . to make the eastern conflict interesting for the Japs. Let the ordinance which pro hibits^ or rather should prohibit, tho sale of merchandise on Sun day be enforced. No'mercbandise, except such as may be needed to relieve the sick and suffering or bury the dead, should be sold on ' the- Sabbath day. L^c-tout, old bachelor?, your solitary condition may yet drive you to desperation. A man in Cleveland, O., shot himself the other day, leaving a note saying he committed the rash act because he "had no home, no wife and nothing to li"e for." The .following utterance by Judge Ernest Gary in bia charge to the Salada, grand jury was in deed .timely and well said": "Set your faces against the - criminal of whatever color or con dition,, for he is the greatest enemy ? of society. As long as jurors are negligent in the discharge of their duty crime will increase and criminals will stalk in the land." The lecture upon the Russo Japanese war-its causes and pro bable outgrowth-by Prof. N. W. Stephenson, who fills thc chair of history in the College of Cbarles . ton, was a masterly effort. One not - possessed of extraordinary ability could not have spoken upon this subject with such ease and eloquence. This tour of the state by Prof. Stephenson will bring the College of Charleston, which is a splendid institution, more pro minently before, and in closer ouch with, the people of upper -???i^mammufmm noon bf May 5tfi, He was a native of Cokesbury, where he spent the early years of his lifo. After the close of tho late war, in which he took a very active and honor able part, he was associated with his brother, Gen. M. W. Gary, in the practice of law at Edgefield- In 1875 Maj. Gary moved to Augusta.. The people of his adopted home repeatedly hon ored him. About a year ago he was elected judge of the Augusta circuit of Superior Courts and : . - wore therermine with cred'*. and marked ability. Some of the county treasurers of the state doubtless collect much larger sums in taxes than does the treasurer of Edgefield county, but we challenge any of them to show a better record than the latter has made this year. Of th?. $70,000 charged up to Treasurer Williams only $157 remain uncollected. So skillful is he in collecting, even in extracting blood from turnips, that it would be wise for him to establish a collection agency. The banks, doctors, merchants and, last but not least (not loast io number of delinquents), the news paper men would be liberal patrons of Collector Williams. " JOHNSTON. DOBEY, For Sixty-Three Years a Sub scriber to the ADVERTISER. The old land marks, the lives that-are connecting links between the dead past of the long ago and the present, are rapidly disappear ing. Rev. J. P Mealing, a life-loug friend and for many years a neighbor, paid a neighbor and warm friend repre senting a younger generation, also gave utterance to some very kind and beautiful remarks upon the life of Mr. Dobey, whom he had known intimately for many years. The deceased was a mah of de cided convictions, and though firm and resolute in character was thoughtful, kind and tender heart ed. He was a friend to the friend less and ever ready to sympathize with and aid those in distress. Mr. Dobey was esteemed not only in his immediato community but throughout the county, being elected County Commissioner in the eighties by a large majority. Ile was no lees a good soldier thaD a good citizen, His comrades testi fy to his excellent service upon the battle fields of the late war. The mortal remains were laid to rest in the Sweetwater cemetery ou Friday afternoon beside the graves of a devoted wife and two daughters, Rev. C. E. Burts, pas tor of the deceased, conducting the funeral. Among Mr. Dobey's last audible words were these: "I am going home." A Runaway Bicycle, Terminated with an ugly cut on the leg of J. B.
