THE records show that j the United States gov ernment has granted forty-five licenses to residents of Co lumbia to retail liquor. It is evident that there are forty five and more "tigers" in the city. For Columbia to point to Charleston as a den of "ti gers" is a case of "the pot calling "the kettle black". IN round numbers, there are 3,200 white children and 5,300 colored children in the public schools of this county. This should cause the Caucas gian race to stop and think. If these figures indicate anything they certainly indicate that the colored people are doing their utmost to educate their children. Are the white peo ple doing all that is in their power to educate theirs ? Would that we could answer, "Yes"! TRULY, the political mil lennium has come in South Carolina-the lion and the lamb have lain down to-1 gether. After indulging for ijjjrcars in the bitterest antip athy, each for the other, Hon. B.R.Tillman and Char leston have "kissed and made up", beating their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. While in the city last week for the purpose of deliving an address before the graduating class of I the South Carolina Medical college Senator Tillman was tendered a love feast the like of which was never before seen in Charleston. Mr. James M. Smyley is conva lescent. Mr. Frank Richardson, of Au gusta, has been on a visit to home folks. Rev. T. P. Burgess, the Presby terian minister, came orer last week. Other Edgefield citiztne,at an early date after the quarantine rem oval, were on our Btreets. We appreciate the position of Edgefield in its precautionary measures against small pox, and extend sympathy in behalf of the ^great loss sustained by fire. uLady Bird" is the name of the insect that destroys the louse, though it is called "lady bug" and "lady fly". Mr. Joe Wright lias beans, cu cumbers and canteloupes up. Our fruit growers are quite un easy over the falling temperature Some varieties of peaches are very scarce while of others there will be a good crop, provided no injury befalls them. Japanese plums have a good crop. The early crop of figs is heavier than we ever re member seeing. Mr. Y. M. May, after roasting an incubator of very fine eggs, ?B meeting with success, and has a number of incubator chicks. The recent rain has made bad roads worse and in many instan ces cellars and pies are full of wa ter. Never was wind more wel come than that which followed the last rain. We note with great pleasure the improvement in The State. The editorials are well written, and of aa elevating nature. We consider it a paper to be proud of and hope it will increase in circulation. About 55 years ago, on the 15th of April, there was a heavy snow storm. It came on Sunday, and early gardeners had green poas for dinner, corn was knee high, and vegetation was advanced accord ingly. The season had been un usually early. "History repoats itself" has become an adage, but we hope in this instance it will prove false. BROKE INTO HIS HOUSE. S. Do you not think so,Mr. Editor. Our beloved teacher, Mr. Criir., and his friend, Dr. James Dobey, went fishing to-day. I do not know yet what luck they had, I guess they will try it on dry land to-mor row. Miss Carrie Talbert went to Mc Cormick Friday afternoon. She will come down to Plumbrauch to the Union meeting to-morrow and be here ready for work Monday morning. Mr. Hunter and daughter are ou a visit to Mr. L. T. Harmon and family Miss Ellie Crawford is visiting her uncle, Mr. H. N. Elkins. A good many of our people at tended the Union meeting at Plumbranch to-day. They report a small crowd, but a good meeting. Rev. J. T. Miller and sou, Mal com, have gone to Greewood to vis it friends and relatives there. Mr. Watson, from the Anderson Brauch, visited Paskeville last Sunday. From his frequent visits here he must have rare attractions here, but we do not blame him for he was with a pretty girl whose name I will not tell. Col. W. J Talbert's bright face has been missed for several days and on inquiring we find that he has been confined to his room on account of illness. We are sorry indeed and hops he will soou be out on tbe streets again. Mr. Pat Park's lovely residence ha? been completed and he and his family will soon move in. Miss Ella Parks who has beeu teaching up uear McCormick will return home to-morrow. One by one our Parksville people are com ing home. First Miss Carrio El kins, then Dr. Dobey, and now Miss Ella, later on more of them will come. I feel my pen is beginning to get hot so I must quit.
