the slayer of N. G. Gonzales
outside newspapers will please
observe that he is not an offi
cial of South Carolina. The
misfortune.and disgrace of his
elevation to the Lieutenant
Governorship was ended yes
terday and a gentleman and a
^ood citizen now holds the

NORTH CAROLINA JUSTICE.
On last Thursday James
Wilcox, white, of a promin
ent family, charged with kill
ing Miss Nellie Cropsey, was
tried at Hertford, N. C., and
was convicted of murder in
the second degree on purely
circumstantial evidence and
was given the maximum sen
tence, 30years imprisonment.
We risc to offer an amend
ment to our constitution mak
ing it mandatory that a "tar
heel" jury be imported when
a white man is to be tried for
murder in South Carolina so
that justice may be done to
the dead as well as the living.

the killing of Mr. N. G Gonzales
in Columbia last week by Lieuten
ant Governor Tillman. It was BO
unexpected, apparently so uncall
ed lor, evidently so premeditated
and cartifuily arranged, taking
place in the bright light of day,

All transfers of Real Estate made
since last year's assessment must:
be noted on the return-stating,
number of acres, from whom
bought, or to whom sold.
The Township Assessors are re
spectfully requested to meet me at.
the appointments for taking tax re
turns in their respective townships,
and they are also required to make
tax returns for all those, who fail to
make their own within the time
prescribed by law, that the legal 50
per cent, penalty be added for their
failure to do so.
All male citizens between the
ages of 21 and 00 years, except ex
Confederate soldiers over 50 years
of age, and those incapable of earn
ing a support from being mailed'
