As was generally predicted the coal mine operators are recouping the loss sustained while the mines were idle by increasing the price of coal fifty cents per ton. The con sumers have no redress ; they are forced to chip in to pay the cost *of the strike. The coal strike has been settled but the unanswered question is, "Who killed Cock Robin, Roosevelt or| Morgan?" Some ascribe the honors to the President, others to Morgan, who, in many senses, wields more power than the nation's chief executive. John G. Capers has shown himself to be an unworthy son of an honored and illus trious father. Few are they who believe that he is actu- j ated by principle in his affili ations with the Republican party of this state. On the contrary, many are they who believe that he forsook the traditions of his fathers for the "loaves and fishes." One pretext the cotton kings have for keeping the price of cotton so low is that a top crop is being made? The fact that this report is given credence is a great injustice to the farmers. The vague possibility of a late crop, not ten per cent of which ever opens, causes a cut in the price of the crop that is actu ally made. _ )andonedy not co^B^^e^T in correspond ence with engineers with ref erence to the cost of the sur vey. When this has been as certained efforts will be made at once to raise the necessary funds. We believe that the people of our town as well as those along the proposed route will respond with a spontaneity that will surprise a even the most sanguine pro- s moters of the enterprise. s ti More peas were planted in ' this section this year-conse ? quently the yield has been greater-than for several years. A farmer who resides only a few miles from Edge field told the writer that he gathered 133 bushels last week. The great wonder is that all farmers do not plant them more extensively. Only p a small amount of labor is re- ? quired to plant and cultivate them, in fact no cultivation is required when sown broad cast. Unlike most crops, in-1 * stead of impoverishing the land they improve it. Peas | c not only feed the impoverish ed land but furnish palatable and very nutritious food for everything on the farm from | * landlord down. ? A STRONG LEGAL FIRM. The change that all nature is now jndergoing presents a non-de script scene. This blending D? summer and autumn though beautiful is not inspiring, for it presages decay, death. The earth has yielded its increase, the harvest is almost past which reminds one that win ter, with its biting frosts and chilling winds,is approaching. The birds chirp in doleful notes the knell of summer, be ing in marked contrast with the merry songs with which they hailed the coming of early spring. They seem to be brooding over the adieus that they soon bid, for a sea son, to their present environ ments when they wing their flight to the land of perpetual sunshine where they migrate for the winter. At this sea son the sun seems to have veiled his face and the rays of light come therefrom to us, as it were, through a glass darkly. But why should not this variety, even of seasons, contribute to the spice of life? WHY HAVE A BUSI NESS LEAGUE? Occasionally the question, why have a Business League? is asked by some one who is not informed as to the pur pose of the league. The rea sons why every town should have such an organization are so numerous and so obvious that,to recite them,one knows not where to begin. We call to mind one circumstance which proves conclusively that the league will conduce to the development and the growth of our town. A short time ago a Sc. Louis capitalist wrote to the Secretary of State at Colum bia making inquiry as to a suitable location for a knitting mill. The letter was publish ed in the daily papers and B. E. Nicholson, Esq., chairman of the Business League's com mitte on new enterprises3 immediately wrote this gen tleman setting forth Edge field's advantages. Some thing may or may not result from the effort to secure this . enterprise.
