Hampden Brooks, a for mer Edgefield citizen, who repre sents a type of soathern gentle man which i s rapidly becom ing extinct, recently headed the .twjket for re-election to tho House of- Representatives from Green wood county. When wo consider that this is the first appearance in the political aiea of this aggressive and progressiveyouug man the compli ment is the greater. Next, the in telligence -comes that James E. Peurifoy,a former son of Edge field, now a prominent young lawyer of the Colleton bar, leads for the state 9enate from that county. This was also the first time Mr Peurifoy asked the suffrage of the people. All of these gentle men were elected over competitors on the first ballot. Editor ADVERTISER : As an act of justice, I beg that youpublisb the followiug : i4A Friend of Mr. Croft", pub lished on the eve of the last pri mary in thc Aiken and Barnwell papers, an article very unfair in statement and calculated and in-' tended to injuriously affect the candidacy of his opponent,G. Dun can Bellinger. This article appear ed on Wednesday, the 20th of Au gust, iu the last issue of the coun ty papers preceding the primary and thus giving no opportunity for reply before said primary. Among other statements made in the ar ticle was the prediction that Bel linger could carry but one county, Barnwell, whereas,the result show ed that he carried four counties Barnwell, Hampton, Bamberg and Beaufort. Out of the seven in the district, these are the counties in which I am bestknowu. Mr. Croft carried but one county, his own, Aiken. The political record of Mr. Croft aud myself, certauJy, to some extent, affected the reeult ir. these lower counties. I have been a con sistent supporter of the nominees of the Democratic party since 1876 and the chairman of the county Democracy J rom 1890 to 1902, iu clusive,wherea8, Mr. Croft, accord ing to his public statement in a speech delivered at Barnwell at the regular campaign meeting in July, voted for Samps Pope, the inde pendent Republlicau candidate against the Democratic nominee in 1894.
