The historic old academy grove will, ere we begin to write 1903, be graced with a handsome modern college building. Col. F. N. K, Bailey is now a peimanent citizen of Edgefield. He is here to stay till death do us part. All praise and thanks to Him who shap es the destinies of men. With but two exceptions every freeholder in Edgefield who was approached on the subject,cheerfully signed the petition to the Mayor and council to order an election on thc school question. This in dicates that owners of real estate favor the bond issue and they pay fully 90 per cent of the taxes. Those who strenuously apposed the erection of a school building two years ago are now some^of its most en thusiastic advocates because conditions have changed. Then we had a building which though inadequate t o t h e demands of the school, could be used. Now we have none but we will soon have a build ing so beautifully environ ed that it will be the envy of every town in the state. Few men are possessed with fortitude in the same de gree as Col. F. N. K. Bailey. Although he feels keenly the heavy loss he has sustained he bearsjtbrayxlYLi^-W^ 7j resoimrio ma^etrieboutn ?arolina Co Educational insti tute one of the greatest and grandest institutious of learn ing in our state. Our citizens of every avocati on and occupation are banded together in the business lea gu? with- a unanimity of ac tion and oneness of purpose that i s unprecedented i n Edgefield. That purpose is to labor for the material advanc ment of our town and county Whatever helps the county will also help the town, and vice versa, whatever helps the town must necessarily benefit the county Weare all interde pendent. The people of our town and county will assemble in the court house on to morrow for the purpose of hearing the candidates for senatorial and congressional honors present their cause. We believe that they will be accorded a res pectful hearing. The candida te or candidates who indulge in personal abuse as some few have been doing will suf fer at the several ballot boxes of our county for thus resor ting to the methods that once unfortunately were popular in our state. We would say to those who attend, listen in a respectful manner and ' re quire those who address you to do so in a respectful man ner. .'There is a tide in the af fairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound up in shallows and miseries". No truer ex pression ever came from ton gue or pen and is quite apro pos to affairs or conditions that obtain in Edgefield. An opportunity-r-a golden one -presents itself to our people, which if seized and improved will "lead on to fortune", but if neglected we shall in future be "bound up by the shallows and miseries" of stagnation and commercial decline. Our ^people will improve this op portunity by securing perman ently the school which for sev eral years has been an honor to the town and county. AFTER THE GAMBLERS. For years the city of Colum bia has been infested with professional gamblers. The local press, notably The State, has repeatedly notified the gamblers to abandon the re J farjous business. On the other hand the city authorities and public sentiment seemed to sanction it by not turning a hand to abate the evil. The ever vigilant and intrepid edi tor of the State, nothing daun ted by the apathy on the part of the citizens, has ever and anon poured hot shot into these dens of vice and urged the citizens to arouse ' to a sense of duty. As a direct re sult of this ceasless effort the ministry and business men are up in arms rgainst those who fleece the unwary, cor rupt the youth and start them on the downward road to ruin. An anti gambling: mass CT CT meeting has been held. Soon sentiment will crystalize into law and tlje enforcement of the law will be demanded. The gamblers will have to fold their tents and steal away with their devices to some other place to ply their art. A serious charge is that docketed against President Roosevelt. His alleged that he wilfully, feloniously and with malice aforethought pre sented to one Major Micah Jenkins a $4500 per annum commission, as internal reve nue collector, without having previously consulted and re ceived an invitation to make said presentation from the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina,United States,Amer ica. Doubtless Maj Jenkins entertains ominous fears lest the president be peremporily ordered t o withdraw said commission.
