' President and Mrs Roose velt while attending the ex position in Charleston, will be ?e guests of Mr and Andrew Simonds, on South street. There is a good deal of dif ference of opinion as to the condition of the oat crop. It is generally believed, howev ever, that most of the late oats is either killed or much injured. The wheat crop is thought to be safe. It is al ways best to sow early, so the grain may be well rooted be fore the freezes come. If there is a woman in this county who is of marriage able age-between i6 loo who wants to marry a man for better or for worse, to love him till he or she shall ride in a hearse, she should write to the Oklahoma man who has a notice in this pa per. No "writing at home" nor cherry tree scheme about this. It is a man who was born in Edgfield 45 years ago. Girls, if you want to be "an old man's darling, " now is your chance. Hon. T. F. Stackhouse, of Dillon, who visited Edgefleld last week, is a brother of the late Congressman E.T.btack house, who visited our town several years ago. He says all that is necessary to get in to office is to announce what office you want and say you are from Edgefleld, He also said the race for Governor would be a close one. That every man who was in the ar my^with Lieut.-Gov Tillman L .--.^-.??e for him ???....work for him and that the soldiers' wives, mothers, fathers, sis ters, and sweethearts would use their influence for Him. One of our exchanges re marked a few weeks since that hog meat was so high that it made one almost wish he was a Jew. And corn is so high that we wish we did not en joy corn dodger. It is a great pity cotton is not good to eat, but if. it were people would quit-growing the staple and ^produce something that they / could not eat. It seems that / farmers had rather raise cot ton at 6 and 7 cents and pay 12 for bacon, $1 a bushel for corn and $4 and $5 per barre] for flour, than to raise such at home. The cry of "hard times" will be heard so long as farming is conducted in this unbusiness-like manner. Farmer friend, raise your sup lies at home, and grow cotton as your money crop and then you will change .your tune from "hard times" to "home, sweet home." [MOTHERHOOD The greatest ambition of Amer ican men and women is to have homes blessed with children. The woman afflicted with female dis ease is constantly menaced with becoming a childless wife. Senator Sheppard's bill "to amend section 2475 of the general statutes, relating to kidnapping, by extending the provisions of said section to any case of taking away a mi nor without consent of parent or guardian" was a special order. The bill, which was introduced during the last ses sion, was reported favorably with slight amendments by the committee.
