ADAMS,.EDITOR WEDNESDAY, OCT. 16,1901 All things cometh to those who waft-long enough! - The Columbia State seems to think all tfcaf is necessary f or a senator to do is to be able to vote, go to the cloak room, and ride an elevator. If there can be no other cri ticism brought against Gov ernor McSweeney than that | he uses the pardoning power] too freely, he deserves to be j re-elected to serve another | term. That's the only charge we have heard of. A lawyer of Darlington was in Edgefield last week on pro fessional business. In con a versation with a gentleman Col. James Tillman's name was used, and the lawyer re marked: "Mark what I tell j you, my friend, Colonel Jim Tillman will be the next Gov-1 ernor of South Carolina.' ' In a long editorial last | week under the caption: "Hampton not 'too old' " The j State gives its reasons why, he is not too old, but they do not read like the following ar ticle from The State some months ago : "Senator John T. Morgan in his day was one of the ablest men the south has sent to congress since the war, but we fear the aged statesman is now in his do tage.7 The same applies to Hamton. If he is able to filli the position, we had rather him to have it than any man in South Carolina, for he has done for the state what no | other man has. The Sampson-Schley court of Inquiry is consuming more time and making more racket in searching for facts, about the battle of Santiago than the campaign required in tbs blockading and destroying of Cervcra's fleet. This was one of the most signal victories of the American navy, and now the triumph is marred by this investigation, which has been simply a washing of dirty lin? en in the sight of all men, and no good has been accomplish ed. It is necessary to belong to the "clique" in time of war as also in time of peace. It is sad, but true, that in poli tics, state and. national, in re ligious affairs and in ali other pursuits, you .must be in "the ring'' to secure favors or to even get credit for what you do do. If you are not in the clique when the time for di viding spoils comes you will "not be in rt." Col, Willie Jones made the last political play. After dis-j covering that his home affairs would not permit him to en ter the race for the senate, he withdrew and urged the other | candidates to do likewise. It was not until he discovered that " his home interests! would not permit" that he de bided to withdraw in favor of | Gen. Wade Hampton. It is obvious to us that it is only a j political scheme whereby Mr. ?ones expects to put Mr. Mc laurin out of the senatorial race-force him out-and put Wade Hampton in the senate.* Of course this was a popular plan which all would join. It ls then figured that Hampton will hold the senatorship till he dies, and then Mr.Jones, as "the man who withdrew in favor of 'Old Wade' " will be a candidate for senator, and will probably not have nearly so many able men in the race as would he have had had he not withdrawn from the race of next year, and this will be the means of landing him into the senatorial chair. Johnston deserves more credit than Mr Jones. We are sure that the grand old Hero Hampton de serves to be honored in every manner possible, and in the words of the Chester Lantern we conclude our remarks: "If |the senatorship is a re ward which we are to bestow upon worthy and patriotic ci tizens, * it should be given to Wade Hampton ; if it is a po sition demanding actual ser vice, * we believe he is phy sically, unable to render that service." This is true, and it is true that he deserves all the honor we can bestow up on him,- but Mr. Hemphill, or Mr Henderson are more ca pable of rendering actual ser vices than Mr. Hampton.
