On May 23rd the Epworth Leaguers of cur state will meet at Batesburg. The present cotton crop is very much larger than it was supposed to be early in the season. Pronounced, sometimes severe, earthquake shocks have been felt in various parts of the United States during the past week. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian church of the Uni ted States has just ended its ses sion in Little Rock Arkaneas. A book on the Jacksonville fire, called "Acres of Ashes" is al ready written, and ready for the printer. This cannot be called the slow age. In Selma Alabama last Friday one thousand bales of cotton in Babcock's warehouse were destroy ed by ?re. "What's,.one- mlu's meat ia^another mi n's poison." The degree of doctor of laws has been conferred upon President William McKinley by the Univer sity of California. Only twice be fore, since the founding of the University in 1868, has this de gree been bestowed by the institu tion. One of the largest total eclipses of the sun 6 min. 27 sec. was visible in the Eastern Hemisphere on Saturday. Astronomers from all over the world gathered on the Island of Sumatra to make obser vations. Thirteen from the'Uni ted States traveled half way rouud the world to avail themselves of this rare opportunity. Furman University is to try the experiment of a Summer Law School. Prof. G. B. Moore is in charge and Hon. Joseph D. Mc Cullough of Greenville and .the venerable Joseph Daniel Pope, professor of law at the South Car olina College in Columbia, will be among the members of the facul ty. INSTITUTE The South Carol i ua Co-Educa tional Institute is about to close the most prosperous session in the history of the Institution. During the present session over 350 stu dents have been enrolled repre senting ten states, 167 of these students are boarders. Last Bum mer thousands of dollars were spent in enlarging and better equipping the buildings. It was then thought that ample room had been supplied for all who wanted to attend this session, but the pa tronage has been so large that il has been impossible to accommo date all who wished to attend. Since January 3rd, applications for [rooms iu the barracks have bc?n rejected. In order to accommo date all those who wish to attend next year, it has been decided to increase the faculty and enlarge the buildings during the coming summer. Several thousands of dollars are now in hand for this purpose. Four additions have a. ready been made to thc faculty. Major J. P. B. Allen, an A. M. grad uate of the University of Georgia, and who has also taken courses North, has accepted the' chair of English. For the past six years Major Allen has been Prof. of En glish and Commandant of Cadets injSouth Ky. College. Frof. Juo I'hackston, an A. C. graduate of Furman University, has been se lected for the chair of Mathemat ics. Piof. Thackston for the past two years has been principal of theMrnniug graded schools. Ile has made Mathematics a specialty. Capt. Ralph D. Epps, a first grad uate of the Citadel, has boen se lected for the chair of History. Capt. Epps has been successfully leaching iu this state for the pasi six years. For four years he was President of the Methodist Con ference School at Cokesbury. Af ter this he taught History and Lit eratnre in Col. Patrick's school al Andersou. Mrs. J. P. B. Allen, a first honor graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, Mass., has been select; d to take chargA of the vocal depart ment. Mrs. Allen has held simi lar positions in some of the most prominent Female Colleges ii: the South, and is in ever}' way qual ified for this responsible posi tion. Not only are all of the above teachers well recommended by the faculties of the different Colleges from which they graduated, but ? they have proven themselves to be successful teachers. Each one of them was unanimously re-elected to fill the positions ; whick they are now holding. With the addi tion of these teachers, the faculty for the session of 1301-1902 will consist of 21 College and Univer sity graduates. Maj. Allen and Capt. Epps are both married. They will live in the main building. Prof. Thackston is a single gentleman and will live in Barracks No. 1, assisting Capt. It will be remembered that the Acl passed at the last session o; the General Assembly fixed the ap propriation at "at least $150,000," while the general Appropriation Act only carried an appropriation of $100,000.
