The expert recently sent from Atlanta to Greenville to examine some suspected cases of small pox, reports that he finds five cases of genuine small pox of a mild type in the city. The New Engand Society, Char leston, doe3 Col. R. B. Watson and Saluda an honor by inviting him to be one of the orators at the annual festival of that Society tonight. The News and Courier speaks of Col. Watson in the most complimentary way as follows: "Great disappointment i? felt that the serious illness of .->- - -ii .oaTrvi^g0 T "^gj will prevent his contemplated1 presence, but Senator Watson, one of the most eloquent members of our State Senate, and one of the finest speakers of the South, will respond for 'South Carolina.'" The other speakers who have been invited along with Col. Watson are Justice David J. Brewer, of the United States Supreme Court and President Randolph of Char leston College. The Society made no mistake in inviting Col Watson and while his intelligence and abillity fully justifies the compliment yet Saluda is proud of the honor her distinguished son brings to her and highly appreciates his being honored.-Saluda Advocate. Tho following dispatch from Washington appeared in the daily papers of Monday, 27th inst.: "Within the last day or two Postmaster General Gary has reit erated his purpose not to appoint negro postmasters in the Southern StateB where it is possible to avoid it. Where no white Republican is eligible by reason of non-residence or otherwise the democratic in cumbent will not be disturbed un less personally offensive to the patrons of the office or obnoxious to the administration. A recent declaration to the effect was made by the postmaster general in re fusing to recommend the appoint ment of a negro m one of the Southern States. He spoke with such emphasis ou the subject as to make the impression that he meant what he said and that he would adhere to it.
