Lake have been withdrawn from sale for the present. These lands will probably be sold in March of next year. Judge Luther G. The terra of the countv board of registration expires on Feb. 1st, 1898. The governor is required to appoint one competent and discreet person to act as commissioner of registration during the next year. Who in Edgefield wants this office? L. Mims. Mr. James W. Goldsmith, of Greenville, and Miss Nannie Jordan wero married at Phoenix yesteday morning. They came to Greenwood and left on the 2.05 train for Greenville. The bride is a daughter of Rev. J. S. Jordan, of Phoenix. She is an accomplished young lady who has many friends throughout this section.-Gleen wood Index. Mr. J. Hampden Brooks, the youngest son of Capt. James C. Brooks, died at the home of his father on Wednesday last, after a short illness. His remains were interred in the Brooks square of our Baptist cemetery on Thursday following. Ham, as he was famil iarly called, had many friends. By nature he was affectionate and lovable, and there was naught to be paid against him. The aged father, three sisters, Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Mo-ley and Mrs. Morgan, and one brother, Coi. U. R. Brooks, of Columbia, are left to mourn his loss, a loss that is for his eternal gain. Mrs. Martha Timmerman. On Saturday morning last, after a long and painful illness this beloved lady, wife of Mr. J. D. Timmerman, and daughter of Mr. ?AV. E. Dobey, yielded up her spirit to Him who made it. ShevaB buried at old Sweetwater, where lie the remains of her beloved mother who preceded her only a few years. The funeral 3ermon was preached by Rev. J. P. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Cotton Growers Association was held in the court house on Monday, the 6th instant. Mr. P. N. Lott stated the object of the meeting and outlined the policy tobe pursued, after which Mr. Lott was ekcte l chairman and W. Arthur Collett secretary. Mr. W. A. Strom was appointed a dele gate, with T. H. Rainsford and P. Timmerman as alternates, to attend the convention to bo held in Atlanta on the 16th inst. Jim Richard son n.n fifteen plows at Richard sonville and did not plaut a seed of cotton on that placj, 1,000 to 1,500 bushels of wheat was his crop, and before 1850 tramped it out with horses. The largest crops of wheat were made around Ninety Six about the commencement of the war. che va riety planted was a large white wheat called Gail wheat and 1 can name half a dozen men whose crope were over 1,000 bushels for a nura her of years. And then came the Red Oat-from 500 to 1,500 bushels was a common crop. Watt Holloway yold 700 bushels of wheat from the fan at 50 cent6 in 1846, the year after the dry year. Col. A. P. The sugar beet industry, from reports received by the Agriculture Department indicates that it has proven one of the most profitable crops that has ever been raised on the market by tb/> American farmer. The factory at Rome, New York, which bas rec3ntly been started demonstrates beyond doubt that the sugar beet produces as fine qualities of sugar as any now marketed. The price paid for the beets, and the bouuty paid by the State of New York on every ton, nets avery satisfactory return to tbe raiser. The interest man ifested by the people of New York is so great that n new plant is to open up at Auburn. Sugar beets are indigenous to any soil, and ere long people throughout the country will recoguize tho merit and .profit in this industry, and establish factories throughout the entire United States.-Spartanburg Her ald.
