It is, of course, noue of our busiuess ; we simply ask out of curiosity. The Johnston Institute is grow ing apace under the new manage ment. Nearly or quite fifty addi tions have been recently made to its rolls. The city of Greenville has im posed a license tax not only ou the original package houses, but on the local dispensaries as well, and why not? Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cbiler died suddenly at his home in Greenwood county a few daye since. Dr. Chiles mar ried a daughter of the late Dr. Thos. Lake, and died at the old Lake homestead. He was wideh and favorably known 'n Edgefield and many friends will mourn over his departure. Mr. and MTS. M. F. Fulmer and family have removed to Edgefield, S. C., where they will make their future home. Their many friends regret to lose tnem.-Augusta Her ald. The late Henry Grady used to say that "cotton is a fool," and so it is. Prices are always low when they ought to be high, and, in spite of iucreased consumption all over the world and the opening of new markets, cotton has been going steadily down. Johnstone has for years enjoyed the reputa tion of being the best orator in upper Carolina. He is also a gen uine, clever, good fellow, always easily susceptible to the appeals of sympathy and humanity. He inherited a legal mind of first or der from his father, the old chan cellor, whose labors, together with those of Chancellor Wardlaw. have put the equity jurisprudence of South Carolina upon so high a plane that it has not only been j commended from every bench in the Union, but has been quoted from in the courts of Great Britain. Well, the steel bridpe at Kemp son's Ferry is now almost a cer tainty. One thousand dollars have been raised by private subscrip tion ; the Saluda board has given $700; and it is pretty certain that the Newberry board will give $1,000-enough in all to built it. Thus the old Saluda IB being bridged from its source to ite mouth. The main instrument in putting these bridges across our river is Capt. King, a North Caro linian, and a fine old gentleman. John Peurifoy, au old playmate of ihe writer, has been reading law for some time in the office of Col. riljman. John is a boy of fine ability and character. His good judgment and popularity with everybody will make him a fine practitioner. Especially is he for tunate in having a man of Col. Tillman's clear brain and fine at tainments to lead him through the labyhrinth corridors of the law. Indeed the young lawyer ofter finds himself in the plight of the devils in Milton, who reasoned "Of Providence, fore knowledge, will and fate; Fixed fate, free will, fore knowledge absolute, And found themselves in wandering mazes los?,." We see from the papers that Pob Marsh is practicing medicine at Edgefield C. H. As long as Bob can keep from going crazy about the girls he will grt along swim mingly. The memory of Bob with cheerful countenance, his guitar, and his sweet songs, is always welcome and pleasant. The present liquor situation in our State presents a puzzle that ) nobody seems inclined to tackle. Indeed some of our verdant states men came out in the News and Courier some time ago. But there was an under-current of doubt and uncertainty running through every thing said. Many stuck to the dispensary because they didn't) know what else to stick to. Some said prohibition to keep on the good side of the women und preach ers. Others still were for high li cense under dispensary regula tions, because the press was gen erativ favoring it. Meanwhile the ?. P. fellows, like "Bier Rab bit," are saying nothing and mak ing money. Gov. Ellerbe has been censured for what he has done, I would like to ask what elRe could the poor man do? As a school boy I used to write speeches on such subjects as these ''Whither are we drift ing?" "The signs of the times," "Political Straws," but such ground is too miry to venture upon just) now. But in all we must have an abiding hope that our old ship of State will mount the billows and ride the waves and will glide into peaceful waters and toward prosperous shores. SEMPHRONICUS.
