M ickier, for many years a resident of Edgeileld county, died at his home in Greenwood Mon dar night, June 8th. The Greenwood Journal says: "The deceased was born in Lexington coun ty on April 21,1894, and was therefore 72 year.?, 1 month and 17 days old at the time of bia death. In 1843 he was married to Miss Carrie Smith, daugh ter of Col. Danie.1 ?Smith, a wealthy planter and prominent citizen of New berry couuty. The fruits of this union were two sons and three daughters, all of whom survive bim except one son. He was a public spirited and progres sive citizen and used the wealth he accumulated in helping to develop the industries of any community in which he lound himself. From bis youth he was a consistent member of the Meth odist church and died in tbe faith which helped bim to lead a model life for more than turee score and ten." Old Hos? Sale. Jackson's store was broken into on Sunday night last between the hours of nine and ten o'clock and sun dry articles were taken 'therefrom, ci gars, cigarettes, ginger ale ?fcc., tu the amount of not more than $166. More would have been taken, but for the fact that discovery was made while the robber was inside the store. More Light on the South Caroli na Bond Scandal. BUT ONE OF THE DEFENDANTS AN SWERS, AND HE ONLY MAKES A PERSONAL EXPLANATION-Ex GOVERNOR TILLMAN DECLINES TO DISCUSS THE QUESIION* FOR THE PRESENT. New York Times. Baltimore, Md., June 12.-The New York Timen yesterday printed a reply from State Treasurer Bates, of South Carolina, to the article published on the 4th, regarding the management, of the South Car olina bonds issued in 1893, by United States Senator Tillman, Treasurer Bates and Governor Evans. The article in the Times referred to .-eems to have caused much sur prise and indignation in South Carolina and other parts of the South. Senator Tillman has been so prominent in leading the "free si I ver-or-bust" movement, and so fierce in his "denunciations of the methods of the President and Sec retary Carlisle, that the narration of his own operations as a finan cier caused much excited com ment. Nearly every nawsoaperin South Carolina published thu case as made out in the Times, and de manded au explanation of the cu rious circumstances .revealed by tue evideuce in the suit now pend ing here over commins io; s on the bonds. In response to all this Treasur er Bates alone replies, although it was announced a week igo that he and Gov. Evans were preparing a "jo.nt reply." The Treasurer eim ply asserts that the $2,300 he was shown to have received personally from the bond syndicate was hon estly earned by hin, and that his employment by the syndicate was after thu completion of the bond transactien, and did not influence his officiai action. It is worth no ting, by thu way, however that $2,300 for a few week's work (s quite liberal pay in South Caroli na, even with some clerk h ir-; and expenses deducted, the pay of the State Treasurer being only $2,400 a year. The Treasurer does no explain why or on what terms Mr Rhind, of Augusta, Ga., was em ployed as the State's official bro ker, and received exclusive con trol of the handling of the bonds three separate times, rangii g from fourteen months to six months before they were to be issued, the State having offered n. bouus, first of $300,000 to place 4 per cents theu of $120,000 to place 4 l-2s He does not explain what the New York and Richmond brokers who organized the syudicate for Mr Rhiud meaut when they informed memb'-rs of thal syndicate that of the $78,000, or two-thirds of the total bouus unaccounted for, the bulk would have to bo given to parties in South Carolina having political influence whose names had '?etter not be mentioned." Senator Tillman and Mr. Bates were the commissioners chosen by the Legislature, and they hal eu tire control of the matter for the State. Governor Evang was then recoguized as the controlling pow er in the Legislature, aud repre sentative there of the Tillmau State Government. He had ap proached Mr. Rhind, and he and bis uncle, Major Gary, who was paid $1.000, were Rhiud's attor neys. Mr. Rhind has not denied that he made that statement to the two brokers, nor has he denied that he told them he would only get of the $49,00C left for him, af ter he paid them and Major Gary, enough to pay his travelling ex penses and time. On these matters all concerned are silent. We are not even told whether the amount of Governor Evau's fee as attorney for Rhind has ever been' determined or paid. Seuator Tillman, Gov. Evans aiid Mr. Rhiud were in Augusta together a few days after the pub lication of the article in the Times -accidentally, the Governor says. No jue of the three has made a statement or spoken a word in re ply. Treasurer Bates coufines him self to explaining one fact which seemed to bear against him per sonally, and which was uo essen tial part of the general bond trans action. Senator Tillmau is quoted as saying that he has no time to re ply to "lying newspaper* corres pondents," and that he will an swer only when charges are made against him by "sbmo responsible person." He does not question any of tbe statements made. They are from the sworn testimony of Messrs. Rhind, Tillman and Evans, and of the brokers with whom they dealt, and the mem bers of the syndicate who took the bonds. There is no question of charges. It isa question of un challenged statements on which the public has naturally promptly aud inevitably based charges. The public ia the prosecutor ou evi dence presented by the New York Timen, and the "free-silver-or bust" candidate for the Presiden cy refuses to answer.
