If W'j mistake not, we have heard the Hon. George D. Tillman or Senator James Collison, one or the other, narrate in pub lic speeches, that the building of the Au gusta and Knoxville Railroad was begun upon fifty cents and a side of bacon. How much better then the prospect of tho nar row gauge from Augusta to Newberry, when we consider that Canvasser Callison had virtually ?S,000 in his pocket before he left the ADVERTISER building ! . Prevented by Sickness. To lae very great disappointment of our community, the musical amateurs from Troy did not reach our town on Thursday last, lo give tticir promised entertainment in behalf of the Presbyterian Church Tho serious sickness of several leading' members of the troupe, was the cause of this er forced failure. We are delighted, however, to be able to announce that our gifted Troy friends will still come-just so soon as t hese indisposed members are well enough to fill their roles. Of course we will give duo previous announcement. . The Gallant Hussars. The article from the Hussars in another column is wise and timely. Most of these gallant boys are poor, and could not, unsupported, otand thc strain of these great annual entertainm?.rits, which have always proved so delightful to our people. Nor could they-in tho face of the huge crowds that attend their picnics-manage matters at all harmoniously without cer tain well known rules and regulations It is well, therefore, that they speak just at this ti:ne. Their grand gathering on the 14th instant bids fair lo bo the largest and most brilliant of all their series. The I -odors Tengue. Dr. B. Hammet Teague, of Aiken, and Dr. Newton Teague, of Augusta, spenl several days in our town last week, giving profound social and musical pleasure t( troops of old friends. Indeed their sing' ing-especially when they sang togethei -at the entertainment of tho Episcopa ladies, was ineffably charming. As gen tlemen, as professional men, as singers and ai* hearty good fellows, these Teagn brothers are very hard lo beat. And wi take the more pt?de and pleasure in sayinj so, inasmuch as they arc in a very consid ?rable degree Edgefield men. The Answer Was Emphatic. On Monday last, the first day of th August tf-rm, there was the largest crow? of people in our town that we have see: hero for three years. Our fellow citizen from all parts of the County poured in b; hundreds. This proves how much mor comfortable and convenient it is to hav our summer term of Court in August tha in June. And those crowds of honore countrymen were in fine humor-very fin humor indeed. We hugger-muggere closely and industriously with horny-ham! ed farmers of all sections and all degrees and to our st? leolyped question, " how : your crop pr-inise?' came the prompt ail invariable answer, "splendid; Hiebest w have ever bail." Frank Sample, E-q., df Coleman, to a noonee, that a public meeting in the in terest of the narrow gauge railroad from Augusta to Newberry, will bo held at Denny's X Hoads on Thursday the 20th instant. All persons having this matter at heart aro invited to attend this meeting. We will announce lurther particulars next week. President Narrow-Gauge Mitchell. Physically, President Mitchell, of the Augusta and Edgefield Railroad, is nul, a narrow-gauge man. On the contrary, he is liberally and symmetrically broad gauge He is a tall, dark, handsome man, easy in manner and fluent in speech. As we have narrated elsewhere, we once though t him a fool ; but see now that we were the fool. Before long we are going to narrow gauge it with him from fair Augusta to holy llenzibah, and into (he regions beyond And then we will hav" a monstrous tale to tell. Court Proceedings. Up to this time, Tuesday night, the pro ceedings of the Court have been of but little interest to the general public. Two. j or three minor cases have been disposed of. On to morrow, Wednesday, the oft continued case of thc State vs. Wm. Glenn, murder, is to bc tried. On Thurs day will lake place the trial of Goode Head, murder. On Friday, Joe Moore ia lo be tried for arson. And on Saturday, the case against Sheriff Ouzls, in the mat ter ot the escape of prisoners, will attract, a good deal of attention. In the mean time the Grand Jury are hard at woik. There is much business before them. The j Sessions Court will probably continue through two entire weeks. Solomon Aultman. Our readers are acquainted with the e ise of Solomon Aultman, erroneously sen tenced seven years aj,j to the penitentiary for life On Monday he was brought into our Court and resentenced by Judge Ker shaw-to 23 years in the penitentiary. This 23 years would fill out thc 30 in tended to be imposed upon him by Judge Aldrich. Without hearing thc evidence in the case anew Judge Kershaw could scarcely have done otherwise than this Aultman looks very badly-as if he had consumption. On Sunday afternoon last, at old Jeter's Church-colored-on Mr. Tom. Bains ford's plantation, seven miles below us, a negro woman and man were struck and instantly killed by lightning. And besideB this, three oilier persons, colored men, were stunned and badly injured. These five people, with olhers, had taken refuge undera tree. The tree was completely shivered. The woman was named Emma Singleton ; and Mr. Tora. Rainsford, who Lells us the tale, Bays that every bone in her body was comnlelely shattered. The man killed was named Richard Curry. The most seriously injured of the three otheia was Henry Singleton, a sixteen year old son of the woman killed. Mr. Riinsford seemed to think he would die. For the Advertiser. The Hussar Pim ic. There will be no personal solicita tion for carcasses and baskets. Those ladies and gentlemen who have been BO generous heretofore, will, we hope, need no lurther notice than this. Car casses should be sent to the Pavilion on the 13th AuguBt, (Thursday night) and baskets delivered to the Table Committee on arrival. No table cloths or ciockery will be needed, as the Company have their own. When din ner ?8 being prepared, no one will be allowed within the enclosure around the table, ex ept the ladies who bring baskets and the members of the Com pany. During dinner, no plates of iood will be allowed to be carried be yond the enclosure. The ladies are respectfully invited, one and all. Gentlemen will bo required to pay 50 cents for dinner, and 50 cents for dancing. Boys, under ten, free. Ser vants will be fed at half price; and their employers must get a badge for them. In this connection we deem it op portune to remind our fellow-citizens that these entertainments are costly, and at the same time they entail too much labor on the members of the Company to make them wholly en joyable to us. At the same time, they are the only source of income we have, other than the pittance received from the State. This, la*t year, was sixty-five dollars, while our new uni forms cost nearly five hundred. OUT membership is small ; and though al most every body wishes the Company well, aud would like to Bee it pros per, but few young men, or old ones, Reem to be willing to keep it np. It will d?pend upon the ladies, whose i' Quence with their husbands and sweet hearts is HO great, whether thone annual gatherings, which ai e designed principally for their enjoyment, shall continue or cease. Although no oe caeion has arisen of late years one may anea at any moment which will show the value of this organizatf to the well being of our County, we felt that our only use was to gi picnics, we would disband at orce.
