January 1,1873. Wo Know Not What God has in Store for Us 1 Whether of joy or sorrow ! This ' thought comes to us as we read of the woe which has so suddenly befallen the household of our esteemed friend and patron, Mr. James E. Cook, of G rani to rillo, whose beautiful little daughter, aged about five years, was burnt to death on Christmas day. The gladness of the Joyous season turned, in the twinkling of an eye, into sackcloth and ashes ! We Deg leave to tender to our friend and his family our most heartfelt sympathy. "Haul Early, Before the Roads Get Bad.? In another column, Maj. s. S. Tomp kins gives this good advice to the plant ing public. Find his card, and see what it is he advises yon to haul early. ? Payable Nov. 1st, 18T3, *Free of In terest." We speak of the " time price" of the famous Carolina Fertilizer sold by Geo. W. Williams & Co. of Charleston. Their card this week is interesting reading, The Time is Too Short. Treasurer Eichelberger says in his ad vertisement, in this issue, that " After the 15th Jan. 1803 the penalties prescrib ed by law will attach to all unpaid tax?," This is in accord with the Tax Act, .by which the Treasurer must be govern ed. But the time is entirely too limited the people cannot all pay by that time and even if they could, it would be ut terly out of the question for tho Treasur er to perform the work in the limited space designated. We thereforo call upon the Governor, the Comptroller General, oar Senator and Representa tives, or whomsoever*? duty it is to act in the premises, to extend the time at least thirty days, or even two months. The people are disposed to pay the tax, heavy as it is, but aro not goin~ to break their necks to do it.. To the tax-payer, we would respectfully say, a Pay, if conve nient, by the 15th-but don't pay one farthing in the way of penalties if able* to meet the tax gatherer for thirty days after that date." We have heretofore been allow eil from two to three months to meet our tax obligations, and we con tend for the same privileges now and hereafter. 1 pS- Come in-pay up-put our receipt in your pockets-and be happy ! Luther A. Ransom. This young gentleman, a son of that honorable and kindly gentleman, Mr. M. A. Ransom of the Piedmont <k Ar lington, is ?oming among us as an Agent of the same .Company. If be has the combined energy and geniality of bis father, people will always be glad to sec and bear him. We beg ibr Mr. Random's j card, particular attention. Not So Plentiful as Formerly. From the tenor of the Dickson-Com pound advertisement, in another col umn, lt would seem that the quantity offered for sale this season is to be some what limited. Tberofore it would bo well to make a rush for it. Local Items. New Year's morning is as bright and balmy as a day in April. We have come suddenly out of rigorous winter into sunshiny spring. The snow and ice are all gone, except in very shaded nooks, and everything looks beaming and hap py. Let us take the day as an index of our lives and fortunes during the year. And | remember that people do not stand still" j in this life. If they do not grow bettor as they grow older, they certainly grow worse. We wish readers, patrons, friends, a Happy New Year! Although this is New Year's da}', there are scarcely a dozen colored people to be seen about town. This speaks well ' for them. They are getting promptly to work. And speaking of the colored j people, reminds us of bow much money they seemed to have last week. There j is no use to say any longer that negroes have .io mono}-. On the contrary we be t gin to think they have it all. Hauy of them are evidently very industrious and very sensible. And we notice too that they have-left off buying finery, and beads, and gow gawa. They now buy goo^l provisions, and good, stout'clothes and shoes. j On Monday next the Doctors bold their quarterly meeting. This Medical Asso ciation seems to be a nourishing and c well-grounded affair. Dr. John Lake { has been again chosen, to the Presidency. He will deliver his inaugural on Mon- ^ day. We have beard of ladies who would liko to be present And we know Dr. Lake ls not afraid ol' women. Nei ther is Dr. Hiil. Neither Is-but why mentionn?mes? Who overheard of a Doctor that was not hand and glove with all thc womeu ?. Delightful new-year's-eve part}' in town last night-among people whoso refinement, hospitality and good cheer do full credit to tbj?lr ?ld Virginia blood. And this party disclosed to us that there is a vast deal of m UN leal talent among the very young people hero. We ought to hnvo a Musical Society. Who will take hold? One of ou r most earn sst prayer.* is that i a Clock Repairer would como along through Edgefield. Two ladies, each, have sent us a fine Gobbler for New Ycfir's dinner. Un- ? mistakable gobblers ! So mir humilia tion of bust weok lia? departed even from , our memory. And now commences the season of dunning and beinfr dunned. We scarce ly know which is the worst of the two. From our window we already see people toning each other pitilessly. Ha, ha, ia ! as the people say in the plays, how Tnnny it is through a glass darkly ! ( I ?ar-Miss Anna Russell, ono of tho ?belles of Augusta, noted ns well for her brilliant intellectual accomplishments fas for her beauty, was married at Augus [ta on tho 24th ult, to Colonel E. W. Cole, of Nashville, Tennessee. Tho cer emony took place at St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church; Bishop H. N. Mc Tyeire, of Nashville, officiating. T!.e elite of the city attended en masse. Tho entire bridal party left in the ovening for Nashville, two handsome Pullman palace cars teing specially provided. ~* Masonic Elections.
