Stamped With the Authority of the Facultj*. Our young friend and neighbor, Mr. A. A. Clisby, has been to Columbia lato ly, and, in compliance with an Act of the Legislature, boen examined by the Medical Faculty of the University of South Carolina, as to his qualifications as a "Pharmaceutist, Apothecary, and Druggist." This examination he passed with easy success ; and his Diploma and License now lie before us-signed by Drs. Darby, Talley, Woodrow and Lynch -and stamped with the seal of the Uni versity. . Local Items. On Sunday last the human stream poured towards Dry Creek, where the Sunday School Convention was in prog ress. Our town was well nigh deserted by its young people. Something con cerning this Convention may bo found in another column. And now the next thing bearing on Dry Creek is the Con cert and Play of'the 15th. Theysayit is to be the biggest thing on record. The immediate local feature of the week has been three wandering Italians (quite sans culottes,) armed with big fid dle, little fiddle, and harp. Conceive of such a trio in an ofT-the-railroad country town ! And their sojourn including sale day ! Such enthusiasm-such never-tir ing processions of boys, white and black -such brilliant performances, in private houses ut nightS-such frantic dancing Of the young people-such wild Galops, Waltzes and Lancers-such pell-mell mixing up, on Sale-day; of Italians, mu sic, whiskey, and natives ! And such streams of mercy-money !-for thc ar tistes 1 More than they have seen for many a day before ! Andsuch a climax-a rose colored hep in tho Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening ! A profound success. Long trains, high heads, roses, curls, tulle, paniers, bustles, brigh*t-e3-es, claw hammer coats, mustaches, long legs, whito vests, starry fronts-ice-cream, lemonade-high-hoppers, sliders, slip pers, squatters, scissorers- and more galops, Avaltzes and lancers! It has really been charmingly Bohemiam. And now if a, woman would only twine!, One of these in tights-and spangles, that walk on a wire suspended a half mile above th.J public square. Come along, such a one, do ! And we'll hand you oil', on to tlie wire, from the upper piazza of the Advertiser o??eo. Vive la bagatelle/ And rain, and rain, and rain ! Fearful Destruction of a Homestead by Fire. The destruction, by fire, of the home s'.ead of our esteemed fellow-citizen, Dr. Allon S. Dozier, at Mt. Willing, on Tues day night, the 30th July, is something startling and fearful. Tho details are given by our correspondent, "Dark Corner." The fire broke out in the Stove Room, and was discovered about eleven o'clock at night. Included in the whole sale destruction, was not only Dr. Do zier's medical libran-, but also that of the late Dr. Harwood Burt, the father of Mrs. Dozier. Dr. Dozier estimates his loss at $5000 at least.. No insurance. jS3-Y*Te have been authorized to an nounce that the contemplated Barbecue at Blease's Store on the 17th, has been in definitely postponed. Curses Coming Home to Roost. John C. Harris, the unworthy native of Edgefield, who has covered himself with such lasting infamy as an enemy of his own race1 and people, has been arrest ed by Federal? officials-at thoTinstance, we believe, of Commissioner Boozer. Tlie charge against him, if wo mistake not, is perjury. This man's curses are coming home to roost. Ho is an object of pity. Any white man who, in true and tried old Edgefield, turns against his race and his people, incurs an igno miny which renders bim an object of the profoundest pity. As previously announced, this distin guished agriculturalist addressed our people on Monday last-sale-day. The rain, falling heavily throughout the day, prevented the usual sale-day influx from the country, but still our farmers and planters were out in sufficient force to make for Col. A. a highly respectable and intelligent audieuce. And the color ed people too presse<l forward to hear him, and evinced, an interest which it was pleasant to note. Col. Aiken has many friends and com rades in Edgefield, and he was warmly received. His address was plain, prac tical, enlightened and nJcasantly humor ous. As for ourself, we were delighted with it, and wish we had time and space to reproduce it for the benefit of our ag ricultural patrons. It was decidedly cal culated to set people first to thinking then to acting. . After the address, a local Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry was auspiciously organized. This Grange consists at pres ent of thirteen male and ten female mem bers. Most of the gentlemen who joined, subscribed also the name of their wives.. The Grange will hold its first Meeting j on the124th instant. Thc Dry Creek Concert and Play. We arc requested by certain ladies and gentlemen of the vicinity of Johnson's Depot, to announce to the public, that, on Thursday evening, the 15th inst., a Musical and Dramatic Entertainment, for the benefit of Dry Creek Church, will be given in the Depot Building at | Johnson's. The preparations and rehearsals for this Entertainment have been going on for a long while ; and to all, who design attending we can, with confidonce, proni iso an extremely agreeable evening-an evening crowded wit* music, mirth, novelty and taste. This was the third session of the Edge field Baptist S. S. Convention, and ly far thc most interesting and successful one yet held. The appointed essays and addresses were prepared with evident care, and truly entertaining and edifying. The harmonious christian spirit which prevailed was very marked, and thc en thusiasm aroused was deep, and we trust, will prove abiding. The only regret felt was Uiat some, whosc^rcsence and help would have been very 'cheering and ac ceptable, were absent. . The enly minister present from a dis tance was Rev. A. W. Lamar, Agent ol the State Mission Board, who preached with great acceptance on .Sunday. Reports were read from forty-two Schools, showing a total membership of 247 oilicers and teachers, and 1,928 schol ars, with an average attendance of 1501. t The Convention has evidently passed now beyond the danger of failure, and ls destined only to grow in favor with all our people and to prosper more and more abundantly in its great work. At Barnwell village, South Caro lina, last Friday, Eli Cha vis, convicted of the brutal murder of a colored man, Adam Jackson, near Blackville, last De cember, was hanged in the presence of three to four thousand people. He an nounced that he was prepared to die, and warned his hearers against whisky, as the cause of his committing tho crime for which he was abo,-i to be executed. -" -?..^.,_- _ The Home of Henry Clay.
