Is'nt it Buncombe in North Carolina where the finest cabbages come from? Well, that Edgefield does'nt produce just as fine, is only for the want of indus try and horticultural skill. This ispi-ov ed by a superb Cabbage which now lies on our table, the gift of our kind friend Mrs. Jackson Co var, whose garden, by the-by, all the year round, is a thing of beauty and a matter of wonder. Mrs. Cs. Cabbage is as large and firm and white as any in Buncombe. And where this one came from, there stand hundreds more. Attractive Sale of Stock and Furni ture. This week Maj. John E. Bacon adver tises for sale his live Stock, and also his Household and Kitchen Furniture. This sale is to take place on the 20th Dec. at Maj. B's. residence. Fine stock and nice furniture to be disposed of on this occa sion. Read His Card and Go for Him. There's young Ellet Landrum come back to live among us once more. And the place and the people that knew him so well whilo he was growing up, shall know him again. And here will he live, and love, and lure people into the popu lar Dry Goods Establishment of Mr. J. He is a young gentleman who fully deserves the kind considera tion he so respectfully solicits. Local Jottings. Judge Melton reappeared on Monday last, and the Court has assembled again and plunged into Equity business. This sort of Court does not enliven our town much. As regards a Jun', we do not suppose another will ever be drawn and notified in Edgefield District, so long as the present law stands. Entirely too many public officials aro required to be present at the drawing. These officials can never be got together it seems. Like the big men in Columbia, they are gen orally intent, we opine, upon their pri vate interests. The public square, as we see it from our window, looks sere and yellow. Thc new-fangled farm gate which has been cn exhibition in the park is taken down, and this morning two sol i tan.-goats alone occupy the ground. Lately we have had portable fences and new-fangled gales. What next? A lightning soap-boiler we dare say. Wonder when we'll hear again of the Railroad! Why didn't we-or why don't we-build our little road to the Pine House? In what way would this interfere with the larger enterprise ? What in the name of God are we wait ing for? How dreary it is to think ol' I another meeting and more long speeches! Tho Day of Judgment is coming, and wc fear it will find us without a railroad. On Monday last, Mr. John L. Addison ancl^Mr. Charles A. Cheatham wore busy collecting money in Pickens and Wise Townships, to make up Edgefield's quota to the public fund for the defence of the Ku Klux prisoners. Messrs. Stansberry Johnson and other attorneys, are to be paid $5,000, and our District is assessed for $1,500. Thc money ought to be raised, ] and no doubt will be. Messrs. A. and C. were quito successful in this vicinity. Hog-killin>r has begun, and people are already talking of Christmas. But what a stunted and shrunken thing Christmas is now-a-days. How demented are the hired house servants. And how you must make a fire for yourself if you get j one. Yet still people ought to strive to ! mark Christmas with merriment, neigh borly kindness, good cheer and dancing. Wo aro a hard-worked and over-taxed people, and once a year at least it will do us good to look on tho holiday side of life. No matter what our rut may bo, let us get out of it now and then. So at the coming Christmas, let dinners, and hops and egg-noggs prevail. And by all means, let the young men get up a ball a real handsome ball-in the Masonic Hall-with elegant refreshments and a perfect flood of light. And let all the pretty girls attend in tulle, and rosesand white slippers. We have received the first number of | a new weekly paper just started in Aili en -The Aiken Tribune-Editor and Pro prietor, Henry Sparnick, Esq. If w? mistake not, Mr. Sparnick has been con nected in some way or other with the Courier within the last few years. Ho has also been Commissioner of Agricul tural Statistics under the Radical State Government. He is a Republican, and the Tribune is to be a Republican paper. In his salutatory Mr. Sparnick specks like a sensible man and an honest gen tleman. We hope to be able to be good triends with the Tribune. Ayrshire Crossed on Durham.
