guscattntas. The Devil and the Lawyers. The Devil came up to the earth ono day. And into a court-house he wended his way, Just as an attorney with a very grave face Was proceeding to argue the 'points of a case.' No, a Lawyer his Majesty never had seen, For to his domtiuions noeu ever had been, And he felt very anxious the reason to know Why :ue had 'een sent to the region below. 'Twas :he faut of his agents, his Majesty thought, That none of these lawyers had ever been caught; And for his .w. i leasure, hr felt a desire To eoua on the e.fith and the rea~on inquire. Well. the L.awyer who rose with visage so grave, .1.e out hi, oiponent a consummate knave, Au.l the De it was really greatly amused To hear the attorney so greatly abused. Iuit soon as the speaker had come to a close, The counsel opposing them fiercely arose, And he heaped such abuse on the head of the first, That made him a villian of all men the worst. Thus they quarreled, contended and argued so - long, 'Twas hard to determine which of them was wrong, And concluding he'd heard quite enough of the fuss, 01-1 Nick turned away and soliloquized thus: " If all they have said of each other be true, The Devil has surely been robbed of his duo; But 'amn satisfied now, it is all very well For these lawyers would ruin the morals of Hell. They have prizz!cd the Court with their villianous cavil, And I'm free to confess they have puzzled the Devil; My :gents are right to let Lawyers aluno, If I h.d them they'd swindle inc out of my throne!" The Left Eye. A rich old man, who resided at the ex tremity of the camp, quite. apart from the rest, had three daughters, the youngest of .vh, in, named Kookju. was as much dis ti::ztlished !or her rare beauty as for ex tr.nidiuary wisdoit. Out' norniing, as lie wa: about driving lIt cattle fior sale to the Chart's market .!ace, he begged his daughters to tell him what they wished him to bring theit on his return. The two eldest asked him for trinket<. but the handsome and wise louokjt said that she wanted no present, but that she had a request to make, which it would be diflicult and even dangerous for him to execute. Upon which the fither, who loved her more than the two others, swore that he would do her wish, though it was at the price of his life. If it be so." replied Kookjn, " I beg von to do as "ollows: sell your cattle ex cept the short-tailed ox. and ask no other price for it except the Chan's left eye." The old man was startled ; however remembering his oath, and confiding in his daughter's wisdom, he resolved to dc ai she bade him. After having sold all his cattle, and be ing asked the price of the short-tailed ox, he said he would sell it for nothing clst than the Chaun's left eye. The report 0o this singular and daring request soor reached tihe ears of the Chan's coturtiers. At first they admonished him not to use such an offensiv-e speech against the sove reign ;-but when they found that lie per severed in his strange demand, they borundI him and carried him, as a madman, before the Chan. The old man threw himself at the prince's feet, and confessed that his de mnand had been made at the request oif his daughter, whose motives he wvas perfectly ignorant of; and the Chan, suspecting tha sOmne secret mutst be hidden under thi: extraordinary request, dismissed the old man, uinder the condition that he would bring hinm that daughter who had made it. Kookju appeared, and the Chan asked, "Why dost thou instruct thy father ti demand nmy left e.e ! " Hecause I expected, my prince, thy after so strange a reqtuest, curiosity wouki ur-:e thee to send for mec." "And whieref-,re dost thou (desire t< S e p "; I wvish to tell thee a truth imnportn to thyself and thy people." SName i t." "Prince," replied Koo:kj, . when tw< persons appeair before thee in a cause, thi wealthy anid the noble genierally stand o: thy right hand, while the lpoor and hiuim bY stand ont thy left. I have heard in mn; soiit udte that t hun most fretquently favoris the ii-.h!e andi rich This is the reasoi whY I ;ersuatded myi fa he" to ask for th; leit ye; it hbein 'no use to thee, sine thou nevert~ seest the pour and unprotec ted." The Chan, incensed and surpriseda the daritng oif this maiden, commanded hi court to try lher. The coturt was opene and the presidenit, who was the eldest Lm ma. proposed that they should try wheth er her strange proceeding was the effectc malice or wisdom. Their first step wa4 to send to Kookj a log of wood, eut even on all sides, o d :ring her to, find out which was the rot a-.d which' the top. Kookju threw it int thec water and soon knewt the answer, v seeiung the root sinking, while the top ro to the surfac. After this they sent her two snakes, ord et- to determine which was a male an which was a feimale. T1hc wise maide hiid t hemi on tcotton,. andi seeing that on coiled hersc'if nyt in a ring:~. whilst tihe Ot. er crept :tway, alhe judged the latter wi ax matle antd the fhrmer at female. Fromi thtese trials the court was co& vineced that Kookjut had not offended th Chanu from mt totives of maulice, but the ii spiirationi of wisdom granted fromt abov lati. ntt so the Chani ; his vanity was hur: an lie resolived to ptuzzle her with (jtue tionla, in1 orlt-r to pro-,ve that slhe was in w i.1. "She should bie as beautiftul as a pea. hen, gentle as a Iamb, prudent as a mouse, just and faithful as a mirror, pure as the scale3 of a fish; she must mourn for her de-...~d Ju.b..d.ik a. ..e ..a- ~.~. ..,d live in her widowhood like a bird which has lost its wings." The Chan was astonished at the wis dom of the fair Kookju; yet, enrnged at her having reproached him with injustice, he still wished to destroy her. After a few days he thought he had fbund the means for attaining his object. He sent for her and asked her to deter mine the true worth of all his treasures; after which he promised to absolve her from malice in questioning his justice, and to admit that she intended, as a wise wo man, merely to warn him. The maiden consented, yet under the condition that the Chan would promise implicit obedience to her commands for four days. She requested that lie would eat no iood during that time. On the lst day she placed a dish of meat before him and said. " Confbss, 0, Chan ! that all thy treas ures aro not worth as much as this joint of meat !" The Chan was so struck with the truth of her remark, that he confessed the truth of it, acknowledged her as wise, married her to his son, and permitted her con. stantly to remind him to use his left eye. A Meal is a Meal. A short time since the door of a coun. try inn was darkened by a well dressed man of genteel and unassuming appear ance, who requested food for his horse, and the extra services of the ostler, inas much as the beast had been hardly driven. The stranger had much the appearance of an intelligent farmer of moderate means, who, though liberal, perhaps, was never prottse. After attending to the welfare of his horse, he. entered the room. "You may give me," said he to the landlord, " something to eat, but merely a cold bite. My business is very urgent, so anything will serve my turn for the present." Scarcely a inoment had elapsed before he was ushered into a small and dirty diningroom, and the fare placed before him, although a small bite, was meagre in the extreme, consisting of the remain der of a dish of cold 'pork, a few potatoes and a glass of water. Swallowing a fi w hasty morsels, he again presented himself at the bar and demanded his bill. " R alf a dollar for your dinner," said Boniiace. . " Half a dollar! I seldom dispute a tav ern bill, sir, but for such as I have had the charge is an imposition." " A meal is a meal," said the landlord, and that is our regular price." " It is a small sum to quarrel about," said the traveller, " but I prefer to be pil fered in a more manly manner." " A meal is a meal," again retorted the landlord ; " we always charge that wheth. er a man eats more or less, good or bad. Perceiving altercation to be useles, the stranger paid the bill, called for his horst and rode away with the muttered excla mation that he would sometime have ad equate revenge. his destination was about fifteen mile: -distant. A fter arriving there lie soor mentioned the circumstance to a frient and that person answered that the taverr wvas notonious for its extravagant charges but that he could fimdl a imn wvho wvouc put the landlord's maxim, " a meal is meal," to the test. Accordingly, befori he set out, our traveller wvas introdnmei to this person, and anm arrangement was immrediate.,ly made to carry out his pro ject. [He was to return immediately aftem the accomplaishment of his business, and they should call at the inn and have sumntuous mecal. In a few davs the trav. ellerreturned, and called upon his coad. jutor, wvho had abstained in order to dc justice to his employer, who was to bemi the expense of his dinner and journey Thme adventurer wvas a burley, good na utred fello w, somnethinig of a wag, and ex tremnely shirewvd. lie was, withal a mos ~isatiable glutton ; eating and telling lar-g< Istories were his enjoymenits. Furnish oni and I will pay for it." " W hat will you have ?" asked the land lord of Mr. Jones.. " A roast turkey, sir." The landlord issued his orders to th occupjants of the kitchen. They require some~ little tiinme to comply with thme or ders. The landlord and Jones soon mad themselv es old acquattintances. " mather a red face of yours, landlord I hav'ntt seen anythin g that lo'oks lik sprinmg in a long time before; line blot somis, sir" " ou are rather a crooked charactel Mr. Jones." The hogs wvould crawvl through twent times a day, and so thundering erooke ewere those rails, that every time the hog ~got out they found themuiselves in the pa: ture again." Before Jones haid time to tell anothe -story thme bell ranng for his dinner. Th t turkey was there, flanked on one side b d a lunge d~ish of ponttoes, on the other b, condiments of various kinds. " I will thanmk you," said Mr. Jones t Sthe damsel in waiting, "to cook mec afe slices of beef'; I am afraid I shall not bj Sable to make a dinner on this." T1he girl withdrewv in amazement, whil . .ones made a vigorous att ack on thme fow which rapidly disappeared before his ad vances. The vegetables, too, had senisi Sbly dinmnshced, an~d he had just laid hi hands upon an aipple pie of uncomimoi Sdiumensions, when the girl made her :up penrance with the beef. "Thanik ye," said Jones, "have tha goodness to cook ime sonme pork steamk ather rare, andI bring mec a plate oaf pick les; I have a very strong appetite." The girl disappeared, and Jones fell tc again, but with less alacrity than before lIe mianaged, howev'er to devour the bee just as the girl camne in wvith the pork, th pickles having in the meantime been ca ten. "Now, miss, Il trouble you for some fresh fish. Hamve you anry?" While the girl had gone to enquire for this, the landlord, who had been apprised of tihe sad havoc which had .been nmade ammong his viands, entered the roomi. At this junmcture of affairs the girl came hack with the intelligence that they had noth ing but pickled salmon. " Give inc half a dozen pounds of thait, then,_" said Jones. He had already stulled himself to re-jy A pletion, and to save hislife could scarcely il have swallowed another morsel. The landlord having heard the last order, H thought best to fill up as cheap as possi ble. "Won't you have some cider, Mr. 1A Jones?" "No sir, no I thank you; I always make it a rule in eating never to drink I anything until I get about half through." . "Good God, sir, you'll eat us out of 2' house and home. Quit now, and you are welcome to what you have'eaten." Well, a meal is a meal ; but I pre- can sume I can obtain more atthe next tavern. CAI Tell them they need not cook that sal- y< man. I'll take you at your ofTr." grea It is almost needless to add that the landlord soon came to the knowledge of Ft all the circumstances connected with the as el -case, and that aft. wards he was particu- C' Jar in selecting objects upon whom to ex. - ercise his shaving propensities.
