Distinguished Arrivals.
Presi'lent liavis and lions. Robert Toombs, L.
T. Wigfall, and T. R. I. Coob. reachd our city
yesterday afternoon, by the 6 o'clock train, of tlc
G:eorgis Iailroad. But few of our citizens Were
a va:- that that they were to arrive at that timot
bat the news s--u:t spread through the city, and an
itmmenSe throng ut both sexes collected) at, the
South Carulina Railroad depot tq see the distin
guihed gentlemen who were expected to de'art
by the evening train.
Perhaps greater enthusias'u was never maui
fested by any nesenblago in this city than on the
appearance of the President. Everybody wanted
to see hnne baixl with the hero and states
man.
President Davis cordially shook hands with all,
the young and old, who could get to him in the
narrow path allowed him to walk to the curs after
alighting from the carriage. lie was fairly be
sieged on tall side?.
W e have neither space -no- time to attempt a
report tven of his brief -peeth. It was earnest,
eloquent, patriotic and impressive in a high de
gree. He expressed confidence in the success of
our arms, relying upon the ardent patriotism of
our people, the justice of our cause and the farer
of Heaven.
Mr. Toombs and Col. Wigfall, also made a ftw
eloquent and patriotic r.marks. The cars movtd
off while the latter was speaking,, amidst the
deafening cheers of the people. The President
and both the other gentlemen were frequently in
terrupted by the most enthusiastic applause.
All were delighted with the impressive dignity.
united with a gentle serenity, in the appearance
and bearing of the President.
Col. Toombs, we learn, remained over until to
day. We heard that Mr. Cobb was to leave by
the night train for Savanna'h.
Sanford's Proclanation.
