Inclined to be Quarrelsome. We heard that prince of story-tellers, Ton Calloway, get off the following, amidst bursts of laughter, the other night. Squaring himself and stretching out his legs, he began: "There was ouce a little, slim-built fellow, rich as a Jew, and independent as the devil, riding along a highway, in the State of Georgia, when he overtook a man driving a drove of hogs by the help of a big, raw-boned, six.-feet-two specimen of humanity. Stopping the hast-named in dividual, lie accosted him : "1 say, are these your hogs '?" "No, sir, I'M to work by thie month." " What pay might you be getting, friend,?" " Teti dollars -a mouth, and whisky thrown in," was the reply. " Well, look here. I'm a weak, little, inoffeasive man, and people are apt to impose upon me, d'you see! Now, I'll give you twenty-five dollars a month to ride along with me and protect me," was Mr. GarJner's reply "But," he added, as a thought struck him, "how might you be on the fight ?" "Never been licked in my life," re joined the six-footer. "Just the man I want. It's bargain ?" queried Gardner. "Six-footer ruminated. Twenty-five dollars-double wages-nothing to do but ride around and smash a fellow's mug occasionally, when he's sassy." Six-footer accepted. " They rode along till just at night they reached a village. Dismounting at the door, they went in. Gardner immediate ly singled out the biggest man in the room, and picked a fuss with him. After considerable promiscuous jawing, Gardner turned to his fighting friend and intimated that the licking of that man had become a sad necessity. Six-footer peeled, went in, and came out first best. "The next night, at another hotel, the same scene was re-.nacted; Gardner get ting into a row with the biggest man in placn, and six-footer doing the fighting. "At last on the third day, they came to a ferry, kept by a huge double-fisted man, who had never been licked in his life. Whilst crossing the river, Gardner, as usual, began to find fault and " blow." The ferryman naturally got mad, threw things around kind o'loose, and told them his opinion of their kind. Gardner then turned to his friend "from the shoulder," and gently broke the intelligence to him, "that he was sorry, but that it was abso lutely necessary to thrash that ferryinan." Six-footer nodded his head, but said noth ing. It was plainly to be seen, that lie did relish the job, by the way he shrugged his shoulders, but there was no help for it. So when they reached the shore, both stripped, and at it they went. Up and dowt the bank, over the sand, into the water, they fought, scratched. gouged, bit and rolled, till at the end of an hour the ferryinn caved. Six-footer was trium phant, but it had been tough work. Going up to his employer, he scratched his head for a moment, and then broke forth: " Look here, Mr. Gardner, your salary sets mighty well, but-I'm-of the opinion -that you are inclined to be quarrelsome. Here, I've only been with you thre-e days, and Prve licked the three biggest men in thei countr'y -! I think this firm had better dissolve, for you see, Mr. Gardner, I'm afraid you're inclined to be quarrelsome, a:id I reckon l'I draw !"-Tehiama Gazette. Make the Best of Everything. A cheerful and excellent man, whose fiee carried sunshine wherever he went, was asked why it was that lie always seemed to be in such good spirits ? " Oh. says he, " I make the best of everything That's it, we thought, and you are a wise man, too. and how admirably it would be if all the long-faced, gloomy, grumbling, frettml ones would only follow your ex ample. Make the best of everything, would ibe a v-ery appropriate motto for everybody, in all places and in all possi ble circumstances. Have you met with misfortune. don't aggravate your grief by repining, scolding or despairing,-but make the best of everything that is left. and with a stout heart -go to work cheerily, and w~ho knows how soon you may re trieve all your losses? Is your husband a sour krout of a man, who comes home fro:n his business witha sad and disfigured countenance, all worn out and cross with perplexities, and care in mercantile life, never mind, make the best of it-you know he has a good, kind heart under all that disagreeable exterior, so catch him in the entry, before he .can get off his overcoat, and throw your arms ar-ound his neck, anid give him such a tremendous kiss that he'll be compelled to laugh in spite of himself Are the 'childrenu sick, irritable, or irrI tating ? are they forward,. pert ungrateful? Are they disobedient, careless, sometimes stupid-0, parents make the best of it rertember how much better they are than Thompson's chiildreni, and 'Squire Clat-k's son who ran away to sea, almost, breaking the heart of his mother ! No matter wvho you are, and what your circumstances are, if you want to pass through the world in comfort, make the best of everything and carry a pleasant face. No blister draws sharper- than "interest" does. Of all the industries none is coin parable to that of interest. It wvorks day and night, in fair weather and in foul. It has no sound in its .footsteps, but travels ihst. It knaws at man's substance with invisible teeth. It binds industry with its film, as a fly is bound upon a spider's web. Debt rolls a man over and over, biinding him hand and foot and letting him hang upon the fatal mesh until the long legged interest devours him. There is no crop that can affird to interest money on a farm. Ther-e is but one thing raised on a firm like it. and that is the Canadian Thistle, which swarms new plants every time you break its roots, whose blossoms are prolific, and every flower the father of a million seed. Every leaf is an awl, every branch a spear, and every single phmt is an armed host. The whole plant is a tormient and a vegetable curse. And yet a farmer had better make his bed of C .nada Thistles, than attempt to lie at ease upon interest." Mrs. Partington says that when she was a gal, she used to go to parties, and always had a beau to extort her home ; but now, says she, the gals undergo all sorts of declivities; the task of extorting them home revolves on their dear selves. The old lady drew down her specks and thanked her stars that she had lived in other days, when men could depreciate the worth of the female sex. " Besides," she added, "so many men are murdered every day, that you gals must make haste and get husbands as soon as you can, or there won't be any left."--"Why so aunt ?" -" Why, I see by the paper that we have got almost twelve thousand post-offices, and nearly all on 'em despatch a mail 1How Yor 'JAY KNoW. GooD FATHERS. It is a good sign and true when you see amid a little group of boys, one dart from the rest, and tossing his arms above his head, shout " There's my Father !" as he runs to meet him. You may be sure, no matter what business troubles soever that mm may have, that there is a spot in his heart still fresh and green, which the cares of the world lave had no power to blight. "TThere's my father!" With what a pret ty pride the little felloi shouts this! He must be indeed a brute whose fatherly heart does not swell with love, whose eyes do not glisten, who does not, at such a ntment, feel amply repaid for that day's toIl, no matter how wearisome. After all, Lovc is the only thing worth having in this world. They who stand over new made graves tell us so. Fame, and money, and ambition, dwindle to nothing, beside the white, ealan brow of death, though God knows it may be the youngling of the flock, whose lips have never even leiarned to syllable our names. REsUsCITATION oF NEwSPAPERs.-The morning after the French occupation of Milan several journals that had been sup. pressed by the Austrian government re. appeared. One had been suppressed five years, and in the last number had prom. ised the "conclusion" of a story in ths next. True to promise, the.next, at the end of five years, took up the story wherp it had been left off and- concluded it. Boy (with tin box passig.thirough rail roz-d car, and calling out) "Gum drops? EXERCISE EN ThE -MoNINo.-Walking is said to be most health-giving, but an intelligent writer says that long walks should not be taken before breakfast, as by so doing an unnatural hunger is created, and the walker is apt to over eat and in jure himsel. Jarly rising, early break fast and a moderate Swalk before commen eing the business of the day, will prov.e highly beneficial to all who lead confined or sedentary lives. TrLEG APin LITERATERE.-The litera ture of the telegraph, as evinced by the messages to be seen in almost any of the telegraph offices in this city, is decidedly peculiar and exceedingly interesting. For instance,.imagine, if you e..a, a more touching allusion to the death of a near and dear refative, than the following: " John dead-on ice--won't keep-come quick."_____ ____ Hexe any wounded you with injuries ?
