GOODE. -Edgefield, October 20, 1856. tf 41 Report of the Commissioners of the Poor for Edgefield District, To his Honor the Presiding Judge: THE Commisbioners of the Poor for Edgefield District, Report, That there was remaining in the hands of the Treasurer at our last Report, the sum of Eleven Hundred and twenty-one dol lars and fifty-three cents, ($1,121,53,) assuming the amount of the General Tax of the year, to Fifteen Thousand eight hundred and nine Dollars and fifty-eight cents. ($15,809,58,) as the basis of their estimate. The Board on the-day of January 185G, assessed a T:'x of ten per cent on the above stated amount for the support of the Poor ot said District, from which they expected to realize after deducting the commissions of the Tax Collector, the net sum of lil'teen hundred and one dollars and ninety-one cents, (1,501,91.) The Tax Collector has since prepared and 1nrnishei a statement to the Board by which it appears that the General Tax of the District collected this year (1856), is Twenty thousand two hundred and fifty-one Dollars and forty-three cents, (20,251, 43) the assessment of ten per cent upon which amounted to two thousand and twenty-five dollars and fourteen cents, ($2,025,14,) from which the Tax Collector deducted his commissions, one hundred and one Dollars and twenty-six cents, ($101,26,) and paid over the balance, nineteen hundred and twenty-three Dollars and eighty-eight cents, (191.923,89,) to the Treasurer of this Board, after deducting nine Dollars and eighty-eight cents, (89,88) in the hands of the Sheriff, which leaves ithe jnet amount of nineteen hundred and fourteen Dollars, ($19,14,00) in the hands of the Treasurer of the Poor. This amount and the sum of one thousand and two Dollars and thirty-four cents, (1002, 34,) in the hands of the Treasurer at our last Report. The Treasurer has received from Thomas G. Bacon, Clerk of the Court, fort'y Dollars, (840.) also from A. Mile, !or a horse, forty dollars, ($40.) Making in all the sum of twentv-nine hundred and ninety-six Dollars and thirty-four cents, (82,996.34,) for the support of the Poor of this District. The Board have since the last Report admitted eight Paupers to the Poor House, viz: Polly Garner, Fredrick Martin, Pollv Wilson, Richard Tayler. Elish Turnage, Elizabeth Tnrnage, Lewis Orendor, Henry Orendor, mA'king in all thirty-two Paupers, at the charge of the District the ist year, and also three at the Lunatic Asylum, Columbi;', S. C. Six have left the Poor House, viz: Henry Wever and Caroline Wever, December, 17th, 1855; Wiliiam West, April 20th, 1856; Adam Plymale, Ma cl 8th, 1856: Hloldy Story, Mlay 21st, 1856; S. 31lteheal, May 31st, 1856. Four have died during the year, viz : Mahoney, October 20th, 185; Emaine Wever, December 5th, 1855: Elizabeth Bivins. Thne Homestead Place, Containing 1544 acres, lying on Log Creek and Beaver Dam, and joining land of Col. F. W. Pick ens, Lewis Jones, Mrs. C. Landrum and others, and within 3 miles of Edgefield C. There arc on the premises a comfortable dwelling house and all necessary out buildings, consisting of new and com modious negro houses, framed and shingle roofed, stbes, barn, Gin house, and a new screw: a finely constructed fish pond, wvell supplied with fish, and of various varieties. This place is nmso well watered, Log Creek run ning through the eastern part or it, and Beaver dam through the western portion, with a sufficient num ber of tributaries suppilying an abundance of water at all seasons of the year for stock ; and two fine springs of good freestone water adjacent to the act tlenent, one on each side. Much the larger portion of this tract of land is in native forest, supplied with an almost exhaustless quantity of the finest timber, consisting of pine, oak and hickory. There are ten or twelve springs of good water on the Beaver D~am portion or this tract of land. Two fine orchards of selected fruit trees, generally young and luxuriant. This is one of the mot healthy sections of thme D)istrict, and well adap ted to the culture of cotton, corn and small grain. The tract known by the name of The Brunson Tract, Lying on thte Edgefield &s Cheatam Plank Road, six miles from Edgefield C. H. This tract is unim proved, centains 3E0 acres, and heavily timbered withm native forests. There arc on thme tract 3'or 4 fine springs and a fine site for a residence. The tract known as the Ciper Creek Tract, Contains 202 acrts, lying 'on the Abbeville read four miles below Liberty Hill . Also adjacent, but not connected, the Calahanms Tract, containing 144 acres.
