EprToa: Permit me to intrude tupont your columns a very brief account of an interesting school-j examination which came ofif at the Pine Grove Aca demy, in this District, a short time since. A school: numbering some 60 or 70 pupils is a matter of no: small consequence in the eyes of him who leioks with hope to the proper improvement of our people. Such is the young but flourishing academy of which I write, and which is now under the watchful superin tendance of Mr. L. B. BotcuttL.E, a teacher admi rably qualified for the arduoust but honorable vocation he has adopted. The day of the examination was in every way a pleasant one. A large company of ladies and gentle men were in attendance. And a feast was spread, in the interval of the exercises, which has been seldom surpassed in the history of pic-nics. The Edgefield Brass Band too, a most praiseworthy corps, filled the air with their enlivening strains, causing young hearts to bound with increased ardor and re-scusitating old ones into newness of life. In their hriliiant uniforms they presented a truly dashing appearance, alike creditable to their good taste and to their District pride. In Short, every thing conspired to make the occasion a most agreeable one to all concerned. During the long and thorough examination of the classes, a marked attentiveness n as manifested hy the entire audience, evincing unmistakeably the deep interest felt by the citizens of that vicinity in the great cause of education. Nor wvas it less observahle with what readiness and accuracy the scholars, old1 and yoting, discharged their parts in thte duties of the day. Suflice it to say, thtat for eight hours the inter est scarcely flagged. And late in the afiernoon the -large company dispersed, satisfied wIth the entire per formances of Mr. BoUCuItErLE's school, arid hoping, doubtless, to have the pleasure of witnessing another and a still better display next season. Before the company adjourned to their homes, CAnt W. STYrESs, Esqr.,'was called out, who ad dressed a few well directed and pertinent remarks to the waiting crowd. The lateness of the hour forbade his going Into anythtng like a speech ; but his brief observation. were none the less well received. Raymond, Principal & Proprietor Sixty Pupils in attendance during the past year. WILT commenee its next Session, (the sixth Academical year under its present Principal.) on the 22d Sept. 1856. This Institution is peculiariy adapted to meet tho wants of those parents, who wish for their daughters a careful and thorough training in all the branches of a solid and polite education. Mlany parents prefer to place their daughters in a select circle of pupils, rather than among the crowded inmates of larue institutions. To such this Seminary offers peculiar inducements, by its perfect adaptation to their wants. It furnishes all the advaatages offered in the most extensive educational establishnwnts, while it se cures at the same time a degree of careful and thorough training, hardly attainable under other cir cumstances. To aid in the instruction of the pupils, no expense has been spared in building and furnishing the in stitute. Its Maps, Charts, Cabinets, Chemical nnd Philosophical apparatus, and Pianos, have cost seve ral thous:nd dollars. These are regarded as helps in the work of education, tnd in the hands of in dustrious and experienced teachers they are of great assistance. Their presence is also a sufficient guar anteo. that on the part of the Teachers, there Is a liberality of view and an earnestness of purpose, in the work of education without which success is never attainable. The great ends which are pro posed to be accomplished, demand the use of the best means, and these are liberally furnished. Five years of prosperity and success sufficiently demonstrate that the claims which are made by the friends of this Institute, for its superiority in all ti.at pertains to excellence, are not without foundation. The following change will be made in the terms and general regulations for the coming year. 1st. The Aca-lemical year will be divided into two Sessions, (instead of three Sessionsas formerly) The first commencing on the 22d Sept.-the second on the 22d February. 2. All bills for Tuition, will be presented at the time of the pupil's entranee, and settlement will be expected, where the money is not convenient, by note, paynble in GO days from the time of entrance. Parents will thus kno'e the exact amount of their bills, and the 'reacher will be saved any future trouble in collection. The rates of.
