'he subject of which it treats has been one of universally acknowledged in. terest anl importance ever since the day when -it was avered by the wise man that " whos6ever obtaineth - a wife, obtaineth a good thing." . Bachelors as we are, our own views on such a theme, could amount only 'to speculation. If she has confirmed ill-healtE - uhe'eannot be all this to him; neither car -sheiff she has a crooked temper, or habit -of -indolence, or is deficient in practical sense.. The woman whose whole heart it devoted to show, to company, or to idle ac. *complishments, may possibly make anein. teresting belle, but she is sure to prove a very indiff'erent wvife. We would not have young girls neglect the beautiful entirelyi but that which adorns should he made sub. servient to some more solid superstructure. To know how to play the last new air, yel be ignorant how to compound the last new podding, is surely unpardonable. A man might as well neglect to learn a business am a woman refuse to acquire a knowledge ol housekeeping. It is useless to disguise the fact that girlk - are too often directed to attract lovers rathet than to retain the affections of husbands. This is especially true of the daughters ol families above the necessities of daily labor, Mrs. F. the successful mechanic's . wife, wakes a virtual slave of herself by drudging, late and early, in order that Anna Maria - may be " brought up," as she phrases it, "-like a lady." What sort of a wife can such a creature 'make? If she marries any body but a rich man, her idle and expensive habits keep him .always poor. If she catches a prize, which, perhaps,jone in a thousand may do, ten to one she-disgusts her husband. In another case she is always out of health, the conse - quence of -want of exercise in girlhood, and, if she has offspring, entails her weakness naturally on. her progeny. LADIEs, a refreshing lotion, possSessin{ cleaning and clearing qualities, miay be made thus: Take a pint of orange-flowei water and a pint of rain water, with a spril of rosemary; add to this four ounces o castile soap, scraped finely; boil all together and bottle for use. A TIrarILL[NG SCENE.-Trhe Detroit Ad veriser of the 28th ult., states: A sub-marine diver from Buffalo has a last succeeded in raising the safe of the Ame:rican Express Company, which was lost w hen the steamer Atlantic wvas sunk of Long Point in 1852. it will be recollectet that this steamer was instantly sunk by col lision with a propeller, and that a lar-ge num b er of passengers wvere lost. The diver wai protected by copper armor, and was unde: water forty minutes, during which tinme he had some strange adventures. The upper deck of the steamer lies one hundred and sixty feet under wvater, and far belowv where there is any current or motion. Every thing therefore is exactly as it first wont down. When the diver .alighted upon the deck, he was saluted by a beautiful lady, whose cloth ing wvas well arranged, and her hair elegantly dressed. As he approached her, the motion of the water caused an oscillation of the head, as if gracefully bowing to him. She wvas stand. ing erect, with one hand grasping the rigging. Around lay the bodies of several others as if sleeping. Children holding their friends by their hands, and mothers with their babes in their arms were there. In the cabin the furniture was still untouched by decay, and to all appearance had just been arranged by some careful and tastful hand. In the office he found the safe, and was enabled to move it with ease, and took it up. n deck where the grappling irons were fastened on, and the prize brought safely to the light. Upon opening the safe it dis. played its contents in a perfect state of pre. servation. There was in the safe $5,000 in gold, $3,500 in bills of the Government Stock Bank, and a large amount of bills on ther bankts, amoutnting in all to aboqt $36,. 00.
