awR.--At the meeting of the stoc the Bank of Newberry, South .Carol int., the following gentlemen were elected Directors for the ensuing year: ; , T. Agnew, B. D. Boyd, L. J. Joies, J3.P. Kinard, E. P. Lake, James A. Renwick, John W. Simpeop, Charles Smith, Andrew Turner, S. R. Todd, J. H. Williams, J. -H: Wells and Joh L Young . Subsequently,' at a meeting of the Directors, B. D. Boyd was re-elected- President.-South Carolinian. General John A. Sutter, the Swiss pioneer of California, bas.not, itseems, -parted with all his interest in the iminene tract of land which for. -merly belonged to him,' under a grant from the Mexican government, and to which his title has just been confirmed by the United States Land Commission, In session in California. This olait embraces twenty-three square leagues of land, or over 150,000 acres, and the General has info-med the editor of the Marvaville Herald, that, in the future management of the estate, he is determined to deal in the most liberal manner with, purchasers who intend to become actual eettlers. -I, THE NUMBER OF THE KNow NOTHINGS.--We leart from the last Macon Citizen, that the last count of the members of the dark-lantern-order, shows about 30,000 in Georgia. ~ This is a mo tiest figure, compared to those Joud and boastful pretensions, and mysterious hints of overwhelm. ing power. Judging by all the indications we have seen, this number.will be more apt to di bninish than increase, between this and October. There are 100,000 voters, at least, in Georgia. Admitting alt the Know Nothings hold on faith fully to their dark oaths, and to their organiza tion, which is scarcely possible, and all get to the polls, Judge Andrews.. must still be left a long way- behind. Why, sure the- friends of Mr. Overby will plunk up courage, and cherish hopes of making the Judge the hindmost horse in the race.-Augusta Constitutionalist. GIEAT FIELDS OF WHEAT.-The celebrated traveller and agricultural writer, Solon Robin son, a few years ages pronounced the farms of Messrs. Henry K. and Thomas Burgwin, on the .Roanoke, in New Hampton county, North Caro lina, the best between Canada and Louisiana. We learn that the former has a field of 900 acres of wheat, which good judges estimate will yield .20 bu ihels to the acre, or 18,000 bushels in all. -It is said to be a most beautiful sight. Mr. Thomas Burgwin has a field of 900 acres in wheat, almost as good. These gentlemen make, besides, large quantities of corn, oats &e.-Fa yetteville Observer. OBITUARY. Datraa-rm this life on-the 24th June, in the 48th year of her age, Mrs. M A RTHA HILL, consort of Rer. W. P. HuL., of Greenwood, Abbeville Dis trict, a. C. Few individuals possessed as many excellencies of character as the subject of this notice. All those natural virtues that adorn the female character seemed to unite in her. Added to these were the graces of the Holy Spirit, which blended with her natural qualities rendered her not only an-amiable female, but a humble and devoted Christian. Truly .she was. "adorned with a meek and quiet spirit which. in the sight of God is of great price." The possession of. these virtues qualified her fur the per formance of the several duties arising from the rela tions of life as . daughter, wife, mother, sister, friend.. These she discharged in such manner as te secure the confidence and esteem of all who knew her. Yea, of her it might be said she had not an enemy. Her kind and affable manner gained her friends, her prudent-and confidential behavior con tinned them. The kind attentions, which the eiti sens of the community in which she had lived fur fifteen years, bestowed upon her during her late illness, gave evidenee.of the high respect which they entertained for .her. These were gratefully appreciated by her, as she expressed to the writer and others. To her-husband she was indeed an " help mate," not only in his domestic engagements, but also ini his ministerial vocation. And her three children ntow knowo and feel that.they. have lost a mother. For more than twenty-two years she was a con sistent, znmber of the Baptist Church enjoying a large por'ion of personal piety, and exerting a holy influence by her placid disposition, her punctual at tendance on religions exercises-her pious conver sation-snd her unirorm deportment. Her Last illness furnished an occasion of putting to the test the genuineness of her piety. and the sincerity of her profession. -Attacked violently with that painful and dangerous disease (dysentery) which in her c'ase bid defiance to the skill of physicians and the power of medigines, her suaferings were indeed in tense; yet not a murmur escaped her lips. The writer of this brief tribute of respect. con versed with her with regard to her situation, and on one occasion remarked, " It is important that we should make ourselves familiar with death, so that we may be always rely and not be alarmed at his appruoch ;" to whieci she replied,'".! have long ago put my trust in God, and feel entirely resigned to his will, and ready to depart whenever he may call me away. Christis precious to me as a Saviour." For twelve days she bore her sufferings with great fortitude ; her confidence in God growing stronger daily. The chief anxiety. she manifested w* to see her husband. who was absent, but who was enabled to return in time to witness the forti tude with which she bore her suf'ering., converse with her upon her preparation for death, and hear the exhortations addressed individually to her chil dreR, to ineet her in henven, "For," said she, "I am going there."- About the rising of the sun on the morning of the Lord's day .the happy spirit of our dear sister took its flight from its earthly house up to that " building not made with hands eternal in the heavens." She'has left a husband and three children, mother, sisters sudsa large circle of relationr and friends to mourn her departure'. " Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea saith the Spirit, they do rest from their labors and their works do follow them." J. M1. C. Mr. WILLIAM MoCASLIN and Mr. ERASMUS YOUNGBLOOD, two young gentlemen of fine Classical education, have the School now in charge. Both Trustees and Teachers flatter themselves with the belief that their School will not have its auperi or in the State. Either Teacher is qualified to instruct thoroughly in every branch required for en trance into our Colleges, North or South. As it is not probable, from the delay we have unavoidably encountered in opening the Academy, that we shall have at any time during the year an inconveniently large number of Students, those who do come will enjoy the great privilege of constant and careful su pervision.
