A CURE FoR HARD TIMES.-If the peopli were to attend less to politics and more to use ful labor they would have a greater abundanec of food, and at cheaper prices. Nearly all th< popular movements of the day have referenci to party polities and the elevation of some fa vored individual to office, where he can draw i good salary from the public. without work. Were as much zeal aisplayed in spreading use ful information among farmers, mechanics an manufacturers, there would be a much mor protitable investment of labor, much more pros perity, and a greater degree of liberality an( enlighteniment iamong the people. If somebod) would start a National Convention for the pur pose of setting idlers to work, instead of crea ting ustless public offices to withdraw then from labor, there would be a greater abundanec of food for next year, and laboring people wouk not be driven to the brink of starvation, as the] now are.-Philadelphia Ledger. AVALANCHE IN THE l'YRENEES-SIXTY PER soxs KILLED.-The inlabitants of Carejan, ir the Pyreiess, on the Spanish side of the fron tier, seeing some weeks ago that an avalancht ,of snow was about Lo fall, assembled in houset which they thought the least exposed to danger Unforiunately tne snow came down on thost very houses, leaving almost untouched severn others which had been abandoned. By the fal fourteen houses and forty-four barns were com pletely destroyed. Seventy-two persons wer buried in the ruins, and sixty of them wert killed on the spot. The remaining twelve though got out alive, were so dreadfully injure that some of them died soon after, and other were considered in a desperate state. The los. of cattle was very considerable. ANOTHEE Fiilibustering expedition is or the tapis. This time Peru is to be tle favorec counry. According to the reports in circula tion, the friends of Gen. Echinique, latelj overthrown by Don Domingo Elia8 and Gen Castilla, are organizing an expedition to restor< their fallen chieftain to the Presidency of tia Republic. It will be recollected that Gen. E was beaten by the aid of seventy Americans disappointed Amazon gold hunters, in the arm3 of General Castilla, and the adherents ot Echin, ique argue that if seventy Yankees put Castilh in power, a hundred or more could restort Echinique. Peru has been in a disturbed con. -dition since the last revolution, and is probably -ipe for another. An expedition could be easily formed here just now. The failure of the othei tillibustering schemes has left abundant floating material in this country, which could be maidt .available by a leader with plenty of funds; and it is said that the Echinique party have a large supply on hand, and any amount in prospective in ne shape of land and other spop. General Echinique arrived in New York about two monihs ago, and put up at the St. Nicholao Hotel. 'SPEAKING of snuff," said Mrs. Partington smiling, such as this cat never be dilatory t0 health. CEors AND PRospECTs IN VIRGINA.-A very intelligent and observant gentleman, just return.. ed from a tour through several portions of Vir ginia, states that the growing crop, generally peaking, presents a highly promising appearance. sn is considerably wanted in some placees, but thus far the wheat does not appear to be injured, exceept slightly by fly. If the usual quantity of rain should fall, the indications are that Virginia wi.l yield an atbundant harvest. THE COMING CaoPS.-It is perhaps rather early to speak positively of the agricultural prospect in the United States during the coming summer; but with wheat, corn arid potatoes at almost starvation prices, people may be excused for looking a little further ahead thari they or ~dinarily do. The reports that we receive froma Pennsylvania, New .Jersey, New York, the Wesi and the South are of the must encouraging char. agter. A vast deal more wheat has been sowr than in any former year, and the fields of winta: wheat all look unusually well. Even if the sea. son should be unfavorable, the amount of grair peduced will be larger than ever known before, gt t be season has been very favorable, nnd wen learn that the yield per acre will probably bn much above an average in every part of the Un ion. Corn and potatoes will also be produced in immense quantities, and the prospect is thai the agricultural productions of 1855 will be enongh, not only to feed America, but to sup ply the deficiencies of Europe, and that at very moderate rate.
