One day the minister heard that his neigh toriwas sick, very sick. "IHow is Mr. K.?" "Very sick, sir; il'ease walk in." The minister, led by the servant, etierod the chamber. The curtains were down, and the room wa darkened, and on the bed lay his neighbor, scorched by a raging fever. Taking him kindly by the hand, s:.id " How do you find yourself this morning?" "Very sick,. sir," replied the neig'hbor, After a while the minister, in a. subdued tone of voice, said, "Do you think, my dear sir, that you have made your pence with God? Should God see proper now to take you away, are you ready to go ?" "Oh, sir," said the sick man, interrupting him, "rain in agony! 'lea to excuse me. Oh, my hea4! my head! I enm~ot talk~ to yoiu no'w.. Please to call agatih.' " When' shall I call I" ' "To-morrow," said the si'ck man. .The faithful man of God burst into tears, and retired. The next day he called again. " No better sir, please to walk in." .The minister entered' the chamber,. and there was his neighbor still upon a bed of slek aess. -My dear friend," said the minister, "bow do you do this morning ?" There was no response. The man wvas delirious now, and spoke in broken sentences, inco kebut-ly.. T1he minister,, leaning upon the torp of his cane; lookedi at his neighboxr,. and the silent tear trickled down hi's cheek.. IHe was abtout to rise up and go awvay, but the wife of the sick man exclaimed, "Oh, my dear piastor,. won't you pray for my husband!I" Tlhe prayer was o ffered, an 'h iitr taking the hand of his neighbor, said, " My dear sir, good-hyc." Still there was no res ponse. Alas! the sick man knewv not that his wife wias weeping at his bedside, and that his pastor hadi been praiyinig for him. As the mar of God was retiring, the aff.etirn a'o wife f'ollowved him to the door, andr in parting, said, " My good pastor, I am in great affliction, 'will you he so kind as to call anin I" " hadam, said he, " wihen do you think I a better calt ?"' "To-morroic," replied theo wife. Oh, that to-maorrow, that to-morrow '! The associations were more than he could bear, and the man of God went weeping all the way returning to- his homne. The next morn ing lie called again. The knocker wvas still muffled. He tapped gently at the door.' The servant opened it. " Hlow is Mr. K.?" " He is said to be wvorse, sir.' "-1 would. like to-se-him." "'You' can't sir. Trho doctor has just left, and he has given the strictest orders that nobody should enter the room b~ut those who are waiting upon him. But here is Mrs. K." " Oh,.my dear pastnr,!' replied she,. burst ing into'-tears, " he is worse ;' I fearnuch worse.. "I would like to see your husband,. mad am, a few moments." " I would b~e glad to: have' yow see hin,. too,!"repliled the- afflicted woman'; " but our physiciain says thiat the crisis has come, and that the slightest excitement may prove fatal; but the doctor said that if his patient revived, he might be able to- see you to morrow." Having' received a message, about the going down of the sun, that his neighor wvas still in a critical state, and: too'-weak to be seen, the minister could scarcely sleep that night, so anxious was he about the salvation of his neighbor. The next morning, taking his hat and cane, he went- earfy to' muake at least some inquiry. Tapping again gently at the door, the servant opened it. " How is Mr. K." was the anxious inquir'y. "Oh, sir," replied the servant, "he is dead!" " DE AD I" exclaimed the mInister; "DEAD ! "God have mercy !" the minister was about to say, but it flashed upon him-it is too late now ! Dear procrastinating sinner! it is enough. I beseech you, don't say to-morrow any more. 're-morrow f It may be too- late forever ! To-morrow's sun may shine upon your grave! Onee lost you are lost for' ever! ." Be wise to day. 'Tis madness to ef'er." _______ REi~r as you go along. This sinning to-day and trusting to to-morrow's tears to wash it out again, is more risky than swim rning with fifty-sixes fastened to your feet. " To-morrow" may never come along. Your sin, like your bank account, should be written up every day. Youth is the seaon for inmrovement. KiND WORDS DO NOT COST MIUCM. They never blister the tongue or lips; And we have never heard of any mental trouble arising from this quarter. Though they do not cost much, yet they accomplish much: 1. They help one's own good nature and good will. Soft words soften our own soul. Angry words are fuel to the fame of wrath, and make it blaze the more fiercely. 2. Kind words make. other people good natured. Cold words freeze people, and hot words scorch them, and sarcastic words irritate them, and bitter words makes them bitter, and wrathful words makes them wrathful. There i; such a rush of all Other kinds of words in our days that it seems desirable to give kind words a chance among them. There are vain words, and idle words, and hasty words, and spiteful words, and silly words, and empty words, and profane words, and boisterous words, and warlike words. Kind words also produce their own image on men's souls. And a beautiful image it is. They soothe and quiet and comfort the hearer. They shame him out of his sour, morose, unkind feelings. We have not yet began to use kind words in such abundance as they ought to berused. HELP Ornsas.--You have no right to be supremely selfis'i. You are not given an existencehere to accumulate for self. The thousands around you, with whom you come in.daily contact, have a right to ex pect something from you. But a few solicit your eharity-they ask for words, looks and acts of kinduess. God never made a frowning, crabbed man. If this is your character, you may rely upon it, the evil one had something to do with your creation, or you are now under his dn. minion. The world around us calls flor pleasant looks, agreeable words and kind acts. These all can bestow. This is a subject which should le careful. .y studicd. by every farmer. It is a great mistake to suppose that the occuption of, an agriculturist is unattended with severe mental exercise. There is, perhaps, no profession that requires more profound study than that of the farmer. Aside from other subjects that induce deep thought, and ; long stretch of the- ininginative powers, the subject under concideratin,. to be properly understood,. re ;uires years of study arid close observation. Such a man- is a ben. only ti himself and the imimediate borhood in which he resides, but to the whole world. Whenever a field of grain or any other p-oducts of the farm are harvested, ai portin of the inigredienrts of the soil, which fed that crop amid supported its growuth, is tanken from the land. Those ingredients should be relaced before the same or a simuilanr kind of crop is raised-on. the-same ground. A man who understands nothing of the phy siology of the human system, would hardly e considered as a proper marn to emp~loy as a physician. either to prescribe rules for ute p-eservationi of health, or for the rermovanl ot disease. No more should a man who un d rstandls nothing of the nature of the soil, or of vegetable physiology, be cotnsidered a proper man to till the land, 'Tho useful arid rnecessary~ 'essonis fi the scinco of agrienlture, are too gerieraully neglected during the early education of thre youh of this country, leaving them to b~e learned by experience.. This is manifestly an error. Whry shou-ld not thle furrds of the Stato Governments he applied to the distri bution of agricultural education, as well as toassist stutderits of the professions to be come lawvyers ? Agricnlture is the most important profession ; and that on whlich all professions must depend- for existence. W~hy not study the improvement of the soil dur ing the " seed timo of~ life," ars well, as Eng lish grammar, or arithmetic? It is an old maxim and a truc one, that those ideas in bibed inyouth, are very likely to, attendt us to old age. If wvrong ideas are continually instilled into tho minds of youth, in regard to the manner of farming, they will bo very likely alwvays to be poor farmers. It is very gratimfyig to the agricultural community to see that some of our most distinguished statesmen, and among them the Executive of the General Government, are irterested enough in their prosperity, to support the establishment of an A4gricul tural Bureau at the expense of the Governi meit. But we hope that they will soon begin to act in the miatter, as their talk can do us but little good. FIDELLITAS. LICE o2x CATTI.E.-It is not often that I have it in my powver to offer anythmig to the' public; but I think it right that each one of us should give to all the betnefit of his expe rience, more particularly wuhen he can make iothing by keeping it to himself and getting mut a patent right. I saw int some agricul. .ural work, perhaps your owvn, that the water in which Irish potatoes had been ,oied, if applied to cows,, &c., wvould kill ice upon them. I tried it several times with ignal success, and a few days ago, ordered ny boy to try it upon my cows, which, at ris time of the year, gener ally are full of icks ; the result of which is, that they have ,n t.,ken their eparte. Plasen nublish this for the benefit of all the commons going cows of the vicinity of our city, and. you will have their eternal thanks.-South. ern Planter. MANAGEEENT OF BEEVANTS. Mn. EDITOR: At the request of some of iny friends, I send an article on the manage. ment of servants. Young servants should not be suffered to run off and hide when the master comes up, or any other white person; they should bo taught to stand their ground, and speak when spoken to, in a polite manner; have them well clothed and this thing is more easily accomplished. A lot of ragged little negroes always gives a bad impression to a stranger, and is often the cause of their running away and being hard to manage when grown. Talk to them; take notice of them; it soon gives them confidence and aidds greatly to their value. Some few per. sons are too strict with servants, but for every one that errs this way, one hundred may be found who go the opposite extreme, and let thei idle away their time and no more than half work. The result is, in many cases, the master breaks, the white family is left in poverty, and the poor he. groes are sold. No one can treat negroes well who does not make them work, and take care of what is made and bought. They become restive, run about at night for want of exercise in the day, to pilfer and visit, hear news, &c., &c. Adams & co.'s express cant beat thei in the transmission of all sorts of reports; they travel from ten to thirty miles in a night, and niany, it seems do with less sleep than almost aniy other I animal. A great deal of whipping is not necessary; some is. If they know they will be corrected when orders are disobeyed, in a proier maniner, it is suflicient. Kindness when sick, at all times and at all times when they deserve, will permit it, is a great thing. The hoipe of reward and fear of punishment, induce human action in master and servant. Never overtask your servant; feed and clothe. him well, allow a reasonable time for sleep, and you w ill not be apt to injure him by work in the day. Never scold or threaten.-Southern Planter. WV. W. It yields abundantly even on ordinmary ground, and is orne of the hest and moost agreeable of all our ve'geta bl-s. TIhe Swveet Potato is very fattening, and may' ho cooked in aniy wiay-they are how-. ever, biest whten well baked. Chi ldren and negroes are extremely fond of themi. Stock of all kinids, and~ poiultry relish thenm much. They have been known to produce at the rate of 200 bnshiels to thec acre from the root s-thus making miore thani forty thou. sand pounmds of excellctit food from onie acre. The cuiltivationa of the Potato puts the. ground in miost admirable ordher for any subsequent crop. Th'le Potato cut into slices, dried andr patrchedl, makes the best substitute for Coffee, of aniy thing wve have ever kn aown used-mixed in eqnal quantity with Coffee, it improves its color andi~ rich ness. Ri rma 0.sross.--The onion, wheni immtu~tnre or impierfec thy ripened is al most whlely valueless. It dlecays early in the season, whbereas it shiouild last andt be in eting 'till Juno of the subsequent year. When from any cause it fails to get ripe, or is kept back, it should be ptilled, anid the crop spread otn the surface of the ground, exposed to the sun's rays for twvo or three weeks before the warm wveathier is p~ast. Tlhie tops arc very sueeulent, and contain sutli cient nourishment to cause a very considera ble enlargement of the roots, if the crop be pulled and exposed in the manner recomn mended. From its peculiar nature, the Ojnion is not liable to injury from moderate frosts, and may safely remain out 'till the weather becomes quite cold. T1hero is no vegetable that can be more easily forwarded by selecting the earliest to- propagate from, than the onioni.
