AGRICULTE RAL From thc Southern Agriculturist. COTTON SEED AS A MANURE. MR. ED-ron.-The great enriching properties of cotton seed as a manire, and its superier power of impai ting an early impettus to lie growth vf p'ants, have been visib!e to all who hwje ever given them a ftirii trial, They need not be confined as a iantire to any one ariicle grown by tho plan'-r, hat ex tended to almost every spicies. o(ivet: tation-corn, peas, coltol, VIvtihablvs, small grain and gralies-thouh not equally benefi,.ial to ali aliki.. From an experience of a few ye;.s the sub sciiber would advise their use on land designed fr corri, in the q-iniiiy of 75 bushels to the acre, to be hided (it after the land is well fallowed, a few das befoie planting timv, and ldeposited ill piles of egitial quantity and distance for convenience and f1-iruhy in disiributing them. The land bving suitably pre pared and ready for phnting, the rows laid offb y a shovel plow, opmning broad and deep, tile seed are then scattered from one end of the row to the other, with the corn dropped oil fhlemi at su1ch distance in the drill as the quatlity of the land will justify, say in medium or ave rage land 2. feet apart. covered with a tutning plow and harrowed off wii an iron-tooth harrow. If the corn be plamt, ed and seud sown on it, tIe stand will be greatly endangered from tha lint and heating quality of thle seed, but by plant ing as advised, a stand will be seCmied. If a greater quantity of seed can be procured, the benefit desher will be more general and permanent to the land by scattering them bioadcasi, anld plow, ing them in. Many contend that iis manure is not felt longer than one year, but such persons, after exposing the seed all the winter, laul them in small piles and suffer them to iemain fhomI Madrch until May, when they are rinoved to the corn hill, there deposited on the sur face around the stalk to temain un covered until wind, i ain and sun dissipa te its fertilizing properties. My own ill pression is, (hat its influence is felt for five years, independent of an iicicased rjtantity of vegetable matter returned to *enrich the land, I f the season prove; suitable, by this plan of nianur'iig in the drill, one may realize an hundred per cent. in the yield of corn; and the sid ceeding ycar, if planted in cotton, in reversing the beds, this very manure is thrown on tile bed where tle seeds are sown, enabling the plant to reap carly benefit at a period, as generally acqui esced in by planters, when it rr quires more support than at any oth;r. in order that its early growth and healthy condi. lion may enable it to escape tia igi of lice, with w hich the plant is never attackud until enfeebled by cold or soiip other ir.jurious catuse. WVe are urged by mauny to mnntre exclusively for COt ton, WVitht such I think differently. The past year, ten acires were in cotton, where an hundred bushels of cotton seed wvere given to the acre, placed in thte water lurt owV, and bedded uponCi thlemi. The result wvas an increasedl growth, and moderate incr'easn in yield, but not enough to justify such an expentdittire of this valuable manure. The same y'ear fifty acres wvere planted in cotton that had been grown thitce preceding years in cor'n and peas, maiiured each year wvith, cotton seed, as adlvised, but none on it the year it was in cotton. The corn stalks had been cut up, and with the0 pea vines, regularly toned under. The land in both cutts was wvell cultivated, and seasons alike. 'The soil of the ten acres wvas good, of a mulatto color, whilst that of the0 ffty acrcs was p)oor anid hilly, 'i ith clay near the surface. The difTer ence in the yield was fifty per cent, in favor of the fifty acre cut. rThis yeaur I have ten acres planted in cotton with at) 100 bushels of seed sownt broadcast and plowed in ; also, fifty acres, planted in cotton, which was in cornt and peas thte past y ear, nmeasurled with an hundred bushels in tihe acre ini the drill, btut none his tyear; the corn stalks cut up in sev oral pieces, and witht thto pea vin)"s turned under. Both curs of laud are similar in quality, and have been culti vated alike with like seasons. The stand on the ten acres is very imperfect aind very irregtthar in its size, and has been much hiarrassedi by lice. The fifty acre cut is a good staind, quito reguhar in its size, has been free from lice, and presents altogethe(r a thn ifty appearance. and bids lair to yield ffy per cent. per acre more than the ten acre cut. From these remarks you will readily perceive that I prefer manting wvithi cotton seed for cot n, instead of cottoti; that wve are better rewarded tIle secon1d year to succeedl it in cotton, anid wvell comipe nsated thte first for our troub,le. I do niot pretetnd to say thait the benefnt is altogether attributab!e to lie cot tot) seed, but to the chtange it) the crop, together with the advaintage of corn stalks and pea vines restoritng the original suisce tibility in thre land to grow and produce good "cototn. .if throse whto disagree with men wi'll give results fromt a better process of' usinig tltis vahuable manur e, I shall be greatly obliged.
