We liavo so frequently written in these pages about ml oats, ami i; ve sent thein to bo many sections of the State and South, that we thought every lartnev sowed lliein, and that it ho did not, that he at least had heard of their intrinsic worth. But much to our surprise we arc* in almost daily receipt of letters linking enquiry about this in valuable grain. Ilow ninth do you sow to the acre? When do you sow? Why do you sow in cotton lately What becomes of the cotton stalks? Theso and hosts of similar questions arc asked now-a-days, and wo will answer most of them so that there can be no error either in the sowing or reaping, and to he plain and explicit, we will simply narrate, as wo have frequently done heretofore, a little experiment during the past season. In 1875 one of our tenants planted a twelve aero field, (four ytars old) in cotton, land good and strong, oak and hickory* We determined to net thin j Held in tod oats, and lionet? advised the tenant to postpone as late as practicable the last ploughing of his cot ton. This was done, and on tin? 10th August wo gave him eighteen bushels ol rod oatH, and advised him to run two "sweep" lurrows in his cotton, then sow the oats at. tin late ot one and a hall bushels per acre, and cover the grain with one, sometimes two, more similar furrows. Taking Ids own time nhont it, he consumed just two wt oks in laying l?y that Held <>! cotton, and wv? paid him two dollars lor sowing our oats in his cotton. The ploughing we did not, pay for, beeauso with his own mule In? was giving his own crop what it needed behne it was laid by. A line stand Was S< cured, ami the oats grew oil* v?-ry rapidiy. I In* winter being warm, this crop would have made a luxuriant sliei p pas'me all the winter, bill it was not touelud by steok exe.ent occasionally when hunger would lorcc? a lot ol the tenant's cows to mount the let re .iiid gorge i In inselvt s. This was d'Uie so liCM|Uently that at times the crop seemed literally mined. Jiut we had laith, lor we never yet have had a crop of red oats to ueoinc up nii>-iiig" at. hervest time. Ahout the middle of February these ininisiotiN worn put a "-top t<?. The fiist. week in March iho wife ami children of our tenant were pai-f i wcnly-fi\ o cents p< i acre to knock down tic coi'i n stalks low enough not to intirbiv w th cmddling. Knrly in .litiic tl.e I w el ve acres were harvested hy live cradh rs, live I >11< cms, two shockers, one water carrier, at tin expense of twenty-two dollars. The work was well done, and was a good day's wmk lor the laborers, the oais In inc; in plants so heavy thai cradling was done to great, disadvantage. Could the crop have been harvested with a reaper, however, we believe many more bushels v.oultl have been saved. These oats were stacked in large shocks, sometimes thirty bundles in a shock, and capped by simply laying one or two bundles across the top <>i the shock. A week after being tail, wo began to haul them in, but the very next day rain fell and continued to fall lor live consecutive days. Much apprehension was fell about iliel grain crop, every one wan predicting ruin, because the grain would sprout J in the fields. Our faith was not shaken, because we knew red oats had nexcr yet disappointed the farmer. In due time, alter the rainy season ended, we began to haul, hiring our tenants, with their own tenuis, to haul those oats from that field to our dwelling place, h distance ol six miles, paying one dollar and a half for e\ery | two-horse load, hauling two loads a uuy, ami iwiiuy (l.'/.t-n DiimliCS to Hit' | load. We hauled nineteen loads, and I though none of these oats were nitonI tletl it) be threshed, but. to bo cut up as neecletl untl leil to vnituuls on the : plantation, we have ?o Ifi tjuentlv threshed this grain and know so well what it will yield, thai we are warranted in saying thai every load would have measured twenty bushels ol shelled oats. They are now boused snugly, and carefully packed away in a loll that experience teachers us holds jusi enough oats to feed thrco horses tor twelve months. We have that many now lending upon them, and we are confident these oats will teed them and have s. me 10 spare when the oat crop ol lb77 is harvested. Now let us see what these oats cost us. First, there is the M i d, eighteen bushels, worth last tall eighteen dollars. Then we paid for sow ing two dollars. Then lor knocking down cotton stalks one dollar and 75 cents. Then tho liarvesing cost two: 1 \ Iwo dollars. And finally we paid twentyeight dollars and fifty cents to have them hauled to our stable, six miles oiV. Well, with our tribe ol little ones, we ourselves packed away these oats, mill imidit Ia IiII .> Inn." *.?. .l (Um. J ....X, V MM T V l/VVII I rtlU ICM it. wo will nay, three dollar*. Add to thiHilte wear and tear of the land, wit h a lair interest 11 )>e>n the investmeiit, Hay o| two <1./liars and tilty eeiits per acre, 01 thirty dollars lor the twelve acres. II we knew ot any other expense we would add it, but wo do not, and really think we pai 1 more liberally all around lor our woik titan most our neighbors would have done. Could we bave possibly spared the time we won I'd have sowed the field and paid no one else to do it. Lack ot tune pr? vented our being with the reapers, and h? ncti we believe wo paid at least nomiY W KEKXi i ; two dollars too much there. Too many irons in the tiro compelled us t?? pay for the hauling, which might Imvc otherwise boon done with our own team. And tlie packing away was a frolic, no money out, but simply valued at tinoe dollars. But with all these high charges we j believe we have housed three hundred I and eighty bte-h Is ol lx>n 111iIoI oats, J at an aggregate cost of one hut dred and li v dollais, or h ss than twentyoight cents per bushel. Three litis",irk ot these oats are worth two bushels corn. Can any farmer in the Sou'It grow corn at loity-two cents per bushel '{ This is the fourth crop of ot'a we have hauled six miles in the sheaf, and never before has it cost us ovei twenty-five cents a bushel, housed. \ye say then earnestly to our readers, sow red o its, and jolvi-c vour nohdi hers to sow them. i )ou t. stand u|ion ttie price of a lew bushels, but !' y and sow. The j defendant, when he foreclosed the mortgage, claimed the second call'and caused it to bo sold as bis property.
