Sessions, flaming of II. h. thick*k Steam Saw 51i)ls.?Over 1,000,000 Feet of Sawed Lumber lhi rued.?J.okh #30,000. ?No insurance, The fine steam saw, plaining and finishing mills of Copt, J I. L, lJuck, situated on the Wnceamaw Kiver, in this county, together with over one million foct of hard pine lumber, were totally consumed by Jire on last Sunday, We had received the particulars, as r.ear as could he got at, from I). L. Jlealy, Etap, of Hocksviile, since which C.ipt. Puck has visited our office. From him wo learn that there was not one dollar ot insurance on the property. J It* estimates his loss at fully frfQ,000. Capt Jhick believed iic hrul provided against accident ??y lire in such a way that he felt perfectly secure, Near the cngiuc room he Jiad recently built a large tank, which was constantly kept filled with water, and had attached to ii a force pump, capable of throwing sixty gallons ot water |M?r minute, and also had in the mill a very efficient portible hand pump. There were t wo watchmen to the mill who did service by relief; one being kept constantly an duty at night. It is not known whether the fire originated from an over heated journal or from the lumace. The first watchman reports that all was safe when he ^Jelt at i'2 o'clock atnfgh#. When the ularui was first given at about 4A o'clock a. m., or early dawn, the build ing was nearly enveloped in flames. The heat from the burning building cut off all access to the pumps, rendering them entirely useless. The schooner Delphi and the brjg M. K. Dana were laying at tno wharf at the time, and it was with considerable difficulty they were moved out in time to escape the general conflagration. The Captain ot .the schooner reports thjit when he was aroused by the alarm, and came on deck, there w as nothing of the roof of the mill standing but the rafters. By the time the mill hands and neighbors had gathered to the lire it was under such 1 read way that all hope of saving the mill or any of the attachments was at once abandoned, and every effort was turned to the saving of a portion of tlie extensivo piles ol lumber on the wharf, and the adjacent buildings.. For the greater portion of the day it was a fierce contention and well lougbt battle for tho mastery, between indomitable courage and perseverance on tho one eido, and the devouring elemcntson the other; but a favorable veering of the winds ro-on forced the terediend, and with loapings, cracklings, hissings and a deafening roar as a mighty army in battle, he went on conquering and to .victory. Whore a few hours before stood two A as vftluablo mills as any in the State, R. long and valuable wharfs piled with % thousands of dollars worth of lumber, and where .prosperity seemed to have spread his golden banner, and made his abiding place, -nothing now remained but an uj^Seemly sight and p. smouldering rums. Through appar cnt superhuman oxertions, aided by a favorable Haw in tho wind, the adja cent buildings were saved, bnt noj witliout a fierce oont&t for a large waro houpe, v\ which was stored s large quantity of bacou and other val< > * * # * -2 / THE 1 uublo goods and wares, which was once on fire, and nearly wrapped in flames. This loss will bo seriously felt, hot only by Captain Buck and a large class of the laboring population in this and adjoining counties, but by business men likewise. Siuce Captain Buck has been in busiue<Mt*be has been the constant lriond of the people, and we know that in this hour of his adversity he has the deep sympathy ol every one with whom be has come in business contact, It gives us pleasure, however, to know that Captain Buck has the pluck to liso to the occasion, and instead of y ' ? ? uiu*muig over 111h loss, ih' is arranging to resume business at an early day, and in forms ih that in two weeks time he will go North to"contract for all necessary machinery, and will have his mill in operation in time lor the winter and spring trade. ; i two Hulks Duownkii.?On last Monday Mr. Samuel S Ilealy met with the misfortune ot having (wo val; liable mules drowned, and a wagon I lost in the Pee Dee River at Yauhana j Ferry. The team was on iu way trom Pine Rluft to meet the body ot J. S. Boroughs at Dull Crock, for the purpose of conveying it to this place for interment. The drowning ot the mules and loss of the wagon was the result ol gross carelessness, caused by driving the mules into the hat without its being properly secured to the shore.
