" raw LOCAL AFFAIRS. THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 18 1873. THE ttBEI'S LAMENT. I'm a poor old cart bar*, lank and tbln, All gone to ruin but boom and skin, Hard vorkcd, and starved, week out week in ; Ricked, and cursed and meanlj f d, By Jamnfd In the side, and jerked by the head, Till it's quite a wt nder I ain't gone dead: H And what the plague it U ail about, V la just the thing I can't make out. V Why I grew up from a frisky colt, To be flogged and punched by a lazy dolt; And why from the first I did'nt revolt, f And kick and bite the vagabond wretch, r Who keeps me forever on the stretch, f An unpaid slave, to carry and fetch, ' Is a question an old grey horse like me ' Can't solve, nor my driver himself, may be. But it'* all tdd late, and my spirit's broke, And only death will romove the yoke, And pierhaps he won't, but with fire and smoke May give my young tyrant a taste instead Of the evil treatment that's killed me dead; PnV? him in the side. Jerk him by the he^d, Till he know* that cruelty dooe'nt pay, A truth he could learn in no other way. If I had'nt gone moping day after day, Pulling and hauling along the Bay, Having never an oat, nor a wiap of hay; But had fed from the tat of the senator's stall, Had a gold-mounted harness to wear on the mall; Or been only bestrode by a peat general, I would'nt be c'urasy nor stupid ; that's me.' But a fine grey nag as ever you'll see. Yet it is'nt my fault you know, at all That my joints are big and my muscles small, And so, that I missed the senator's stall; I'm clumsy, stupid, crooked and slow, But whatever la left is a horse you know, Who can feel a prick or a savage blow; And I can't help thinking each kick and curse While it hurts me some, hurts my master worse. And whenever I get?to the other shore, Where good horses go when their toils are o'er, And with two-forty nags to stand In a row, Switching their bright tails to and fro, Careless of either wheel or whoa? Where oats are always apropos, If 1 meet the biped who owned me before: Perhaps we'll be equal before the law, Aud I sba'nt be cudgelled or forced to draw ; Or be fed on salt grass, or husks, or straw, But lazy and happy may travel or no Without any Primus to urge me to go. The Juries. Oq the ICth the jury commissioner proceeded to draw the petit juries for the October term. The following names were drawn : Cresar Alston, Hamilton Robinson, Ned Alston, Paris W. Simmons, James Gordon, Adam Alston, Ned Strafford, Robin Rivers. John Baynard, Simon Dcveaux, Geo. Greaves, John Frazier, Ansel Chaplin, Moses Simmons, James A. Emmons, Tony Baker, Cato Perry, Caesar Brown, Frederick Proctor, Renty Fields, A. S. Davenport, J. M. Williamson, Samson Howard, Thomas Behn, James Bush, Henry Glover, Dago Hey ward, Harry Wright, S. D. Gilbert, Sancho Bennett, James Snipe, William Finnick, NeroPorcher, Israel Camel, Joshua Henry, Ishmael Alston. A protest has been made against the drawing as ilegal. The grounds for the protest are that the drawing was made earlier than fifteen days before the opening of the court, and also because the chairman of the board of county commissioners was not present. We are called UDon aeain to remark | upon the fact that Juries drawn have entirely too large a proportion of Beaufort residents upon them. Some names, occur on almost every jury in the year. A Delinquent Purchaser. At a sale of real estate uiadc under an order of Judge Graham some time since, a piece of property was knocked down to a bidder who afterwards failed to come forward and complete the purchase, Judge Graham after a reasonable time issued an attachment and ruled the purchaser to come forward and complete his contract. This order not being obeyed the bogus purchaser was attached for contempt, the sheriff was ordered to place him in jail and would have done so but for the fact that he was non*cst. This case is ouly mentioned as a warning precedent. A Wreck. On Monday last Pilot Early reports seeing, at sea, about six miles north of Martins Industry light ship, the tragments of a large vessel, consisting of spruce deck planks and the scuttle hatch, painted blue, with a large ring in it. ' The sea was too heavy to piake any attempt at an identification of the unfortunate vessel of which they were a part. Iron Works. The advertisement of the '"Forest City Iron Works," in another column, invites the special attention of our readers. The large and rapid increase of business which this Foundry enjoj's, is one of the best proofs of the merits of the work they do, and their favorable prices. Besides manufacturing and repairing all kinds of Engine and Boiler work, they also make Iron "Fronts" aud furnishings for houses post, lintels, <&c. The attention of Planters is especially called to the Portable Engines manufactured by their house. The "Forest City Works," are located near the Union Passenger Depot, Augus ta, ua. A Dangerous Rascal. A colored boy, Damed Hen, was some time since discharged from the Savannah & Charleston railroad. On Monday last he was seen removing a tie on the railroad near Hardeerille Station into such a position as would certainly have run a train off the track, if it had not been discovered promptly. He has not been arrested. PatF Titc new wharf is progressing well at Port Royal. About one hundred feet have been completed. It is four feet lower than the old wharf, which is to be either cut down or the track sunk to the of level the new wharf. 93F The Philadelphia Quaker's lamp shines, solitary and alone, each night, '"like a good deed in a naughty world.
