V it . V LOCAL AFFAIRS. THURSDAY. AUGUST 28 1873. The editor of the Standard must have beedinti muddled in his great effort eulogistic 6f the new bath house, he describes it as follows: 4'The structure is octagonal in form, resting on eight palmetto logs, set in the ground, with heavy nlanks for a support, all covered with wua, to protect it from worms." Now whoever heard of a bath house being covered with mud to protect it from worms, and then instead of eight palmetto logs to support it, there are seventeen. But then the editor may possibly refer to some other, than the Beaufort bathing house. tkf "Let go that jib?let go that jib tr quick," shouted captain Paul of the sloop Anna in a squall. ,4I ain't tuching your darned old jib"' replied John indignantly as he jammed his hand's deeper into his pockets. Alfred Williams is certainly hav ing honors heaped upon hiin, he has but just been elected intcndaut of Beaufort, when his excellency causes to alight on his Hon's. shoulders the eagle of the 3d regiment, S. C. N G. B?-D. C.' Wilson, Esq., as usual mindful of the wants of the citizens of Beaufort is about establishing a lumber yard on the lot west of the club house where he will be able to supply the wants of our citizens with anything in his lino. The Newt and Courier has lately appeared in a new typographical suit, and presents a very neat and improved appearance.. SP*Dr. Jenkins is getting a'ong finely with his new house, and with a coat of paint, the building bids fair to he an ornament to Bay street. We fail to sec in what respect it is a "rickety old concern" as certain parties are envious enough to call it. S-Mr. W. Dearborn, the persevering inventor has roturned to exhibit his gins, which are fast gaining the confidence of our ginners, and ho is coufident he will yetorowdthe McCarthy gin out of the market We wish him success. B?.Geo. Holmes, County treasurer, has left for a trip to the west. Mr. J. W. Collins started north yestcrday to be absent till October, 1st. Mr. M. Pollitxer has gone to New Tork with two of his sous, where they are attending school. f^Ootton is coining iu slowly. Buyers are paying four cents a pound for it in the seed. Mr. Vcrdier, late clerk appeared and made a statement to the effect, that he as one of the managers of the late town election, properly transmitted the returns to the late Intendant, and that he had not seen him since. Mr. Bennett's course of action, he stated, has been uninfluenced by any advice of his. Moved by Wariea Gleaves that the rejxmof Mr. Verdier be received as information. Under unfinished business, applications for the position of marshal were received from, Joseph Cohen. A. (J. Satumcf, J. E McGregor, Walley Green, E. F. J Pupong, J. C. Kivers and Peter Gibbs. Moved by Warden McGIll that the *everal applications be laid on the table. The Intendant annouueed the following committee on health and town improvements, Wardens Mayo, Robinson and McGill. On finance Wardens Gleaves, Thompson and Fisher. Adjourned subject to the call of the Intendant. Mooting County Commissioners. Thursday, Aug. 21. Present, Paul Pritchard ?nd Geo. W?- ! terhouse. The report of a meeting held at Hilton Head to take action in respect to work upon the highways, was received and ordered on file. Speights, at Ashepoo, was entered, and relieved of its contents. Mr. Speights tracked the parties to the White House Plantation, where the gdods had been taken in a boat. He recovered everything. Even his cash box, containing about $130, was found, not having been opened. It is be ieved that the thieves are known, and will be brought to justice. The hot and rainy weather is testing all exposed wood work, especially the 5 doors in our stores and dwellings. To prev nt all shrinkage, and enable them 1 to warrant all work sold by them, Messrs I. H. Hall & Co., at a great expense, ( have erected, in connection with their j Door factory, a modern drying room, in ] which all doors are placed till fully dried, before gluing, wedging and pinning; this , process adds one-third to the durability i of the doors. Send for price list of doors, 1 sashes, blinds, white pine, walnut and fancy lumbers. Agents for Asbestos' ( roofing, used extensively all over the j country for its cheapness and durability. The newspaper men were about to i take Abbeville by storm last week. They came in droves, and, with native modesty, peered into every nook and corner of this great metropolis. There was Henry Sparnick of the Aiken Tribune, with his stalwart frame and smiling face, looking like one of the beatitudes ; Thompson of the Beaufort Republican, with his meekness and good hurd common sense well blended; Brown of the Conservator and Iloyt of the Intelligencer, representing the cotton and railroad interests of Anderson county?wise in counsel and earnest in exhortation; Thompson of 1 the Keoicee Courier, fresh from the mountains, and glowing with the energy and ardor of rejuvenescence; and Kussel of the Sentinel, who made the welkin ring with the patriotic war-cry, " Sussa- | fras or death ! ' In these days of polili- ' cal and moral degeneracy, it was plea ant to see such a gathering of honest men. They reflected the probity, integrity, and intelligence of South Carolina. ?Malium% ?The Danville (111.)'Times is getting quite excited, about the Fanner's Movement. The War r Department has issued a general order ' enforcing the above sentences, to be t executed by the Commanding Geneaal j at Fort Klamath. ?I met Gen. Banks at a pleasant picnic in Mr. Frank Leslie's grounks on Saturday. It was the banks of the '"Lonely Lake," and there were waterfalls, and fountains, mosses and ferns, cold chicken and cold champagne, to the heart's content. We were traveling out of the Shenandoah vallej', and maneuvering very successfully to draw Stonewall Jackson along in our rear. Not a man of ns but swore that the rebel i general should not get to Massachusetts before we did; that the foul invader ' should not set foot on the frontier of our native state, without finding us sternly < confronting him in the interior. And it was only necessary to gaze once in each soldier's face to see that the hated enemy could not capture us without stepping over the bonndarv lines and violating the 4 territory of Maine. I wi?hed several ] times during the recent races that I had J the gray mare I rode through that cam 1 paign here to enter for some of the purses. The bursts of speed which that faithful creature showed on several occasions would pass belief if you did not know jnst how near the detested foe got to us at times. It may not he that I won any spurs in the Shenandoah, hut I had a pair to start in with, and I used them well coming out- No, I am confident that no one won any spurs down there, though we played straight poker for most everything else, and I lost my blankets once to a cavalry captain who subsequently had no need for them. But this is digressing. You may not think i me a hero from all this, hut who is a hero to his valley.?.John Paul. The Health of Vice-President Trillion. The Rev. Dr. Fields, of the New York Evangelist, received a private letter from Boston, written Tuesday, from which the following is an extract: "Vice-President Wilson was at my house yesterday and overnight. lie eats and sleeps as well as he ever did, wears no paten on his C3*e, shows no sign of physical disorder, except a slight curve at the rieht corner of his mouth. lie savs he feel* no weakness in his side or limbs, and his walk is as clastic and easy as helore his cffectiou. It was paralysis of the facial nerve, and not mnch else, except that his whole system was overworked and run down, and needed rest. That, with restricted diet and mild remedies, is fast setting him up." ? Pain Killer. There can be no necessity at this late day, for the press to speak in commenda- Ji tory terms of this remarkable medicine, in order to poromote its sale; for it is a medicine that is. known and appreciated the wide world through. When ever we speak of the Pain Killer, as in the present instance, we do so in behalf or the mt afflicted, rather than with the view of advancing the interest of its proprietors. For various diseases, such as rheumatism, cholera, cholera-morbus; burns sprains, me bruises, and so on to the end of the cata- un logue, we are convinced that there is no remedy before the people equal to Davis' Vegetable "Pain-Killer," and we know that thousands upon thousands entertain the same belief. * Certainly, we cannot refer to the history of any medicine which equals that of the Pain Killer. It was introduced in 1840, and from that time to this its sale, both at home and abroad, has constantly and rapidly increased, and _ we rejoice at the high reputation it has F achieved, because this reputation shows that is has been the means of relieving a rast amount of human suffering. Wc hope the present proprietors of Davis Vegetable "Pain Killer" will long live to jnjoy the prosperity which they have so J fairly won. 1 Patronize Home Enterprise.?Mr. P. P.
