' - ? LOCAL AFFAIRS. THURSDAY, JULY 24, 1878. A Sortlnatlon Declined, ti*. foxfTOR.? I respectfully 'teg to decline the nomination for Warden, my bflslness being out of town add my time being wholly occupied there, I hate no opportunity of knowing the condition of the town and attending to the duties required. I hare found this to be case during the past year, and as the town now requires an active, energetic and practical council board I feei compelled to decline, so that one who has better opportunities and tnore time may be nominated in my stead. Appreciating fully the honor conferred upon me by such a unanimous nomination. I am yours truly . P. C. Wilso*. A United States Nuisance. A petition Was presented to Mr. Clouttnan last week for leave to pull down the old rookery opposite Burkharts mill. It is a dilapidated hoUse in which bad characters frequently congregate, and some night, it is feared, a fire Will stare there which may burn the best part of the town. It is one of the properties held by the U, 8. Government. Of course no repairs can be made in such cases and the town contains twenty such places which are perfect eyesores and nuisances. The United States will 'not pay taxes, will not repair, will not retnore, will not cleanse, will not do anything but persistently hold on to th3 property. A Big Tooth. Hid biggest tooth on record was drawn from the bed of the river by the dredge, on Friday last; It was almost perfect when taken oilt; but rcoeived a blow from the haintner of one the washermen, which cracked a large piece off. Its greatest length on the surface is 7} incites; width, 31 { from surface to root, 12 inches; ccrcumference, 19 inches; weight, 141 poutids. The cabinet of apocimens now in Mr; Wells' office contains some very large bones among theui are other remains of the mammoth e insisting of parts of ribs, tusks, leg at.d feet bones, vertibne, etc. Some of the veftibr? are eight inches in length. Sharks teeth of all sizes arc numerous, aome measuring 121 inches across. Jumped the Track. On Sunday last, the engine of the night train on the Savannah & Charleston road ran into some cars loaded with iron which had been left on the side track, but which had run dowu on the ? main track without it being discovered. The engine was thrown completely from the track, and a good'dcnl injured. No one was injured, the engineer clinging firmly to his engine. No other cars left the .track. After six hours hard work the track was cleared .and tbe passengers due in Charleston at 5 a. nj., reached there at 1 p. m.. . Collector C. II. Wright has seized a number of palmetto logs, which wcro cut on Hunting Island, and offered for sale here. The land from which they were taken is in the possession of the government and is oj)en to redemption by the ante-bellum owners. Mr. Wright, very properly, holds it to be his duty to preserve such lands from the depredations of timber cutters or other irresponsible parties. i?"* On Monday last the up passenger train collided with a colored girl named Lucy Hosey, near Kllenton. She was crossing the track at the time and was thrown some distance by the cow-catchcr, breaking her leg above the ankle. She was taken to Ellcnton for surgical attention. AST* The fact is no longer to he disguised that the caterpillar is upon us. Already we hear of their being on Johns, Wadmalaw, St. Helena and Paris islands, and we have no doubt that they are to be found on all the islands and in every cotton field on the coast. Coming thus early, with the crop backward, they will be likely to destroy the whole of the cotton crop on the sea islands if the weather should be wet and cool. t&F A party of gentlemen have been trying for a week to catch a devil fish in the harbor. So far they have not even seen one. Off Bay Poiut was a favorite spot for devil fish before the war, but none have been soen since. It is thought bv some that Yankees disagree with devil fish. | ^ An old negro named John, long an inmate of the poorhouse sent in a request to the county commissioners for permission to marry another pauper in house. John has reached the mature age of seventy-five. Commissioner Waterhouse forbid the bans. Killed on the Railroad. We learn that Friday morning's train from Savannah, on the Savannah and Charleston Railroad, ran over and instantly killed a colored woman opposite the Fair Grounds near Savannah. J6T A band of gypsies [have been camping on the vacant lota back of the court house for some weeks. They Were rather astonished some days ago to get a notice from the United States Collector that they most pay a rent of five dollars, for using the lots belonging to the General Government. MP* The Savannah military organization celebrated Monday, July 21st, as the anniversary of the first battle of Manassas, by a parade and pic-nic at the fair grounds. We have reason to remember the twenty-first of July. We called it Bull Run, and have never ielt like celebrating it much. ?Mr. A. C. Schaflfer is to publish a B2w paper in Colleton County, to be Leal lea the Walterboro' News. It will be Republican in politics. B?- Wm. Elliott, Esq., and his family, are sojourning fbr the s*'miner at Flat Rock. Pilot Dupong has been suspended for six mouths for negligence, in leaving the WiUiamint! W&* Another of these delightful moonlight excursions is contemplated. We are all agreed. jtlEih The infant son of John Cooper died on Wednesday morning after a very brief illness* g?" Dogs will take notice that the badges have arrived, and that the penalties are severe on those found running at large without them after August first. ISF* A little boy wants to know if the " Hon " prefixed to the names of members of the legislature! means "honest" To be certainly. Col. G. V. Mclntyre^ proprietor of The Colleton Gazette has determined to set up a press in Walterboro and do his own printing. His removal from the position of Colonel of the " mcKsh " has not depressed him much. Sudden Death. A colored train hand, named Junius Reese, suddenly fell dead on the down train on the Port Royal Railroad, near Allendale, on Friday last morning. .The body was taken to Augusta. Rumor states that Mr. Whipi>er, who, has recently been appointed Treasurer for Barnwell county, is about to remove that office from Barnwell to Blackvillc. As a matter of course the auditor's ofFuc will follow.?Barmcclt Sentinel. The probability is that no term of court will be held in Barnwell county this fall, on account of the undecided question as to where the county scat is, Barnwell or Biackvillc. A Party at Beaver Dam. On the fourth of July a large party visited Beaver Dam mills. A part of the day was spent in fishing after which 1 dancing commenced. Ample accommodations were furnished by Mr. Fiyhbcrg, for the dancers. Everything passed ofl very pleasantly, the party not separating until a late hour* Personal. I). C. Wilson's mill shut down on Monday for a short time* Mr. Wilson j goes north this week on business. George Bennett started north on Tuesday for a short visit; M. M. Kingman and wife arc on a visit to the north. Mr. Northrop, editor of the Columbia Union Herald, was in town on Tuesday. Maj. Willis and Mr. Klattc of Charle.'.ton, have been in Beaufort this week. There were six deaths in Columbia for the week ending the 19tli?whites 2, colored 4. ?The Brooklyn Trust Company, a saving institution has just discovered that its president has been speculating with its funds. Uptn being detected Mills, the president, committed suicide. The loss is eight hundred thousand dollars. Poetry und Advertising. Poetry and advertising seem to have become blended, "as it were." Ordinary prose has ceased to have the power to invest with proper attractiveness the announcements of vendors. Great emergencies bring out great minds. Hence the necessities of the advertiser have evolved the poet. This, for example, of a tailor, who, spurniug prose, "drops into poetry," like Wegg : Oh! romp into the garden, Maud, And ait beneath the rose, And ace mo prance around the beda, vressea in my Sunday domes. Oh! coinc and bring your uncles, Maud, Your sister and your aunts, And tell them Johnson made my coat, My waistcoat and my pants. Equally fanciful and suggestive is this: Gayly young Ferguson llought his cigar? Bought it at Mulligan's, Where the best are. When he want* fine-cut, or Bnuff for his nose, Gayly young Ferguson Purchases those. More substantial, however, is the following where the mingling of mackerel and emotion, cheose and affection, is really sweet: Oh ! say not I lore you because the molasses You porch seed at 8impaon's was golden and clear. The sirup, the sugar, the Jelly Id glaasra. The crackers, the mack'iel, 1 know, were not dear. But when yew came to Bsc with Simpson's smoked salmon, And showed me his samples of Llmburgcr cheese* 1 felt that his claim to be cheap was not gammon: I loved you an1 said so, dear Jane, on my knees. jSlfemm' This nnrivatlod Southern Remedy is warranted not to contain a single particle of Mercury, or any Injurious mineral solwlance, but it r PURELY VEGETABLE, containing those Southern Roots and Iierhs, which an all-wise Providence has plactsl in countries where Liver Diseases most prevail.
