^5=5==^?==^=^5= LOCAL AFFAIRS. , | Thursday, july id, 1878. J9 No fire crackers in Beaufort pn (he Fourth. God be praised. 19* The Sea Island cotton crop in this County will doubtless be a short one. The area planted is a fourth less than last year, and the plant is two weeks later in maturing. Caterpillars would make short Hork of it, should they attack it 19* We hear that W. J. Whipper, iu been appointed county treasurer of Barnwell. This looks like very quick promotion. MT The friends of Nelson R Scovel, late cashier of the F&edman's Savings bank, were glad to welcome him back to j Beaufort, on Sunday last tSF A horse attached to a baggy of Lieut R. H. Gleaves, became frightened at some object on Bay street, on Tuesday and ran into the lamber truck of Mr. R. G- Holmes, breaking the shaft of the buggy without further damage. tGF The lamber dealers of Savannah have agreed to test the validity of a city ordinance requiring that all lumber ship* ped from that port be inspected. Mr. E. S. Miles shipped a cargo without inspection, was tried befbre a justiee and appealed the case to the courts. James L. Jamison, senator from Orangeburg, died last week in Columbia. He was formerly in the lower house, where be was distinguished as the noisiest, most ignorant and most conceited member except Byas, his colleague. His loss is our gain* tGF Several persons in Beaufort testify to feeling two distinct shocks of earth* ..U quaice on ioe zom un, iiiauy p^rsuus iui the shocks in Savannah on the same day. We hope the next "quake" will be more definite. We aro so dull here that a "shaking up" would do us good. 16k- We have received two numbers of the Barnwell 2'imei, late the Beaufort Times. It is now published at Black* ville. If Gen. W. will givo personal attention to his paper he can make it an influential and useful organ of the party to which he belongs. It suffered greatly from neglect while published here. J&* The Planters House in Augusta has been sold out A company has been formed to build a first-class hotel there. Not before it is time. The Augusta hotels have for a long time been dirty, unsavory, illkept places with nothiug first class but the charges. Lot B, in block 107, the ITabersham lot has been redeemed from the governm?nt. Kv Misa. Ann B. Elliott This we believe is the first property that has been redeemed. , Fire. A fire occured on the premises of Capt. Wm. C. Johnson, five miles above Gillisonville on Cypress Creek, on the first inst, by which a large two story building and several smaller buildings were destroyed. Also about thousand bushels of corn, a lot of fodder, Ac. Loss estimated at $ 1000. It is supposed to have been The work of an incindiary. A Moonlight Excursion. On the evening of the Fourth a large party of ladies and gentlemen embarked upon the barge Independence for a moonlight excursion down the river. The barge which is sixty feet long by twentyfive wide, was conveniently and safely fit^ ted up for the occasion, and was decoratad with flags. The party left the wharf at eight o,clock. The band struck up a lively tune, and as they passed in front of the town a fine display of fireworks was given. Dancing, singing and promenading filled up the hours pleasantly until the return. On the evening of the Fourth, Mr. C. Harry West, son of C. H. West, of the firm of Henry Cobia & Co., was shoi and almost instantly killed by James A. Duffus Jr., tfhe parties had been on bad terms for some time, but Mr. West, seems not to have been suspicion us of an attack. James Duffos, accompanied hy his brother B. L. Duffus, approached Mr. West, who was seated watching a game and each brother slapped him in the face. He got up and retreated from them behind a table, when JTames Duffus pulled oilt a revolver and shot him through the left breast Wost staggered toward the door, but fell near it and expired in a few minutes. Too brothers Duffus were arrested and James was committed to jail on the same evening. Captain Fenn Peck died in Charleston on the 1st. He was a native of Massachusetts, but went to Charleston in his early youth and has made that city his home ever siuce. His career, as a steam boat captain, has extended over a period of thirty years, during which time he was principally engaged in the trade between Charleston and Savannah. He commanded the " William Seabrook,1' the " Cecille" and other boats. During the Mexican war, he was ia the transport service of the United jbates Government. Of late years, he commanded the steamer Pilot Boy, but was compelled by declining health to give up the commaud and retire from the active pursuit of a sea-fearing life. He was over seventy years of age at the time of his death. ?Col. M. R. Delany has been consulted in regard to the advisability of having a colored candidate for the mayoralty of Charleston in the coming election. He replies in a letter pf some length in which he argues that it would not reflect that credit and oonfidence abroad on the ancient metropolis which is desirable if her chief magistrate were a colored man. We are not prepared to oa\7 tnw fnr tVin nnrient renown of the city might be marred by a black mayor but it seems to us if be was a Modoc indian be cold hardly reflect less honor on the city than Moses does on the state as chief magistrate. A Philadelphia surgeon was called the other day to a house up town to amputate the leg of a woman. He is a near sighted man, and when he reached the house he got into the wrong room, and calmly sawed off the limb of the servant girl, who was a German, and who had come over two days before, and who thought it was one of the customs of the country. When a murder is committed in a New York hotel the effect upon the business of the house is good. The Grand Central has prospered wonderfully since Fisk was shot there, and since the murder of Walworth, sr., by Walworth, jr., at the Sturtcvant house, that hotel has been full to overflowing. People who open hotels in Gotham should take the hint, and keep a first class assassin about. nTfTrcTARi KHFri "YJTEEKLY LINE TO BEAUFORT. PACIFIC & CHISOLM'B LANDINGS The Steamer PILOT BOY.
