( ffHY DDES HE NOT ANSWEBT Some days since, a resolution passed j rtie li(?u?e; neque^ting or dem tiding from ttorStufeTTeiurrwr: t irpe^uWxiog the papers, and* the amounts paid to thenr >i fhr th? publication of the acts of A-weuiI It My of thedawt sc^ion. There was an apl/\ propi-iadon* of $-75,000 to pay these flitims, niadh souie time ago. This lar e amount has apparent^ been ezhau ted. 1 and till a majority of the county papers remain unnaid. ff'oar memory serves us well, ex Treasurer Parker claims to hive paid on this account upwards of 9 50,000. which, with the $75,000 appropriated by lh? present Legislature, and said to bo exhausted, would aggregate over $105,000; j There-are-not,-we think, at a libera1 estimate, over forty papers in the State which. h?-ve- published the acts of A -senibly. A'lowinc thetu. on an average. $-',000, which is a liberal figure, - i-~ aurt iwi the whote amount wouiu uc *>w.vw. There is something rotten here, beyond nil question, and we call upon Treasurer ardozo to resnond to the resolution of the House, and iet the peofde- Know how this large amount of money have l>een distributed. We hear reports of fal u'ous 'aims being presented by certain of our State dailies. If it is true the (acts should be made known. The whole system of adveitising the acts of the ^sseuibly in 'the new-papers of the State is an outrage upon the taxpayers, and meant, evidently, for nothing else than to curb the frve expression of opinion by the press. We do not say that this onject has been accomplished in very or in most instauces, but such is rhe tendency. A u-eless and heavy expense is thus entailed upon the Stae, with *?o reciprocal benefits, so far as we ean set.?'Carolinian* When the report ealled for by the Carolinian is made, it will be seen why there has been such a complete caving in of the conservative pre s of this State. They have generally sold out their birth right for the mess of pot age offere*' by the administration in the publication of the law.-. No Charlestonian can claim a want of knowledge of what is law. Be Charleston Meic* published the laws i three editions at an expense to the state af new $10,000; the Courier in twoor three editions, for about $7,000; the Jte publican in two, $10,000; the Sunday Time*, $3,000; Rtftttt $2,000; Celt $3,000; R-cord, $3,000. Is it wonderful that these papers sing small when ???? coiumevlting: on tho extravagance of state officials. Why should the Newt and Courier howl at Colfax, Kelly and Brooks for owning Mobil er stock and voting tm questions tending to increase its value at the expense of the government? Is it not the same thing for a journal pretending to be democratic to thus become the stipendiary of a radical admini tratioa? Can they be true to the ?n!ft and to mammon at the sain r" 'r? ? ? tiaie ? Southern State Debts. A scheme is said o be on foot to push through the next Congress a bill providing for the assumption by the United States of the debts of the southern states. It may appear ridiculous at first to propose such a thing, and yet there is some justice in it. Take our state for instance. The government which created tho largest part of our bonded debt, an 1 then stole the money, was virtually imposed upon the state by the federal government. We dont believe it will ever n* o?on the interest on it. unless our political majority U changed. The bankruptcy of a state will hurt the credit of the government more in one year than the assumption of our $16,000,000 ol bonis. We believe that our three hundreed milieu* U. S. bonds just sold at nart at 5 per cent- interest, would have been aa easily disposed of at 4 per cent, interest were it not for the deplorable condition to which this and other south ( erh states have been reduced by the it* famous governments to which tbey have ; been subjected by federal influences. THEPBESlDEXraSOlTllER*TOUR. * He Must Visit Port Royal and Beaufort. A large meeting of prominent citizrtis was beld on Tuesday evening at the Sea Island hotel for the purpose of taking active measures to iuduce the President , to visit us during his southern tour. .T. C. Mayo was ca led to the chair. G. W. Johnsow was made secretary. D. C. Wilson proposed a proerumuieas follows: . A special train from the Port Royal rail- . road to meet the pretidential party at Charleston in the morning, bring thcui 1 quickly to Beaufort; ? banbuet at the * Sea Island hotel; a trip to Port Royal in carriages; meet there the revenue cut- * ter in which they proceed to Savannah, after having a view of our harbor, Fort ( Pulaski, etc. J. G. Thompson amended this by proposing a return from Port Royal and a grand ball in the evening, feeling confident that'he would be offered bo better hotel accommodations during I his whole tour and no livelier ball than ? I could be got up here. 1 B M. M. Kingman offered his hotel to s H the committee for the entertainment of i Bp the whole presidential party, free of any ( expense, also his livery stable to make t M the day agreeable. This was greeted i I with deserved applause. A committee t was then appointed to make the neoetwa- 1 I ry arrangements, and the meeting ad- t I joaraed to meet at the call of the oom- I B xaittee. We call the attention of the taxpayers o the presentment of the grand jury, >artieniarly to that pert referring to the (legal feet of sheriff's and tii il justice's onstables. We recently saw a bill which tae paid by the lute board of county omuiissioners in which one of these on* itablcs received fifty twodbllarefor going ip to Bransons aud summoningf.mr witr iesses all li ing at that place. Not les.ban two tboa and dollars per year can e saved to the county by rigidly examinng and auditing the.-e bills. Judge Vlaher killed one abase on his first appearance here on the bench, which will ave twt> or three- hundred dollars at each :orm of court, that of allowing witnesses pay for attendance on court in each case, though they may be called in- half a dozen.
