He who,?? his days of toil, has sighcl fbr leisure, finds, when it has been ob talned, that the pains of vacuity are not less than those of oppressive lalnr. Rigid adherance to particular systems are alike found to disappoint their votaries of the calm felicity which was expected from them. But let us think what sort of world k would: be, if only one particular tangible things; or one particular condition, or one p *rtb u'ar course of conduct, were to confer liappinesa Evidently, it would l?e a world or utter sameness and languor, instead oi the world of infinite variety and incessanl ac'lvitv, which it really ia We may be satisfied, then, that happiness was not de signed to be the invariable concomitant ol any such particular things, but to be a lem-itation towards an infinite variety ol pursuits, ai^ a perpetual activity of out faculties. How otherwise could we have been a -tive beings? How otherwise could the whole of our faculties have received employment ? It is true that some things continue longer to give satisfaction than others, and that some of the highest of our sentiments and affections never get tired of exercise. We do not, for instance, so soon become weary of bread, or sound animal food, or any other of the staple nrti- lea of life, as of the luxuries which are more rarely presented. Nor can the practice of any lo'ty duty ever appear less excellent than at fir-t, but rather the coutrary, "as streams their channels deeper wear." But, while the reasons for these peculiarities of ear economy are obvious, it is equally clear that changes in diet, and.varieties of object and of employment, are necessary, in order to maintain the stimulus of life. There ought to be rau"h amusement, and ample facilities for obtaining excitements of an inno-ent kind. Mental laborers sbou d endeavor to obtain occasional physical employment. Every one should endeavor so to vary his employments, and ;o to mix them up with atnusemen s and recreation, as to obviate the inevitable consequences of monotony Hott to C'lioos? u Uiwlimvf. Some one has written an essay, giving Instruction how to choose a liusband. The writer treats the sub:ect just as if he thought choos'ng a husband was just as cold blooded a matter as buying a ho:seAnd it may be so with some people. I'ndoubtedly there are mothers who calculate on the marriage of their daughters merely with an eve to external advantages ?to wealth, and what is called station in life?with as littlesent'ment as they would experience in buying a clock. And there are daughters who entertain similar views. But these are exce lions! cases. The great ma onty or marriages are detenu ned a mo6t solely by love. And fre ;uer.tly the parties would find it a^ d :l?c ilt as anybody elsetoaecono for the r love for ea<-h other. And wh> n this love, ih's sntiment of extiemear.d exclusive d Motion to another, is once o<per'enced, it is very apt to obtain its object. Opp sition. from any sour e. is generally found, in t' e end. to be vain, and worse than use'ess. A few s eculatL e marriages?marriages of convenience and of calculation?take tduce. But. in the main, Love, and Love only, is the great matchmaher. So it has always been; so it will ever be. A Mother's Work. MEDICAL. .. ~ THE CAUSE AND CURE OF CONSUMPTION ?The primary cause of Consumption is derange- i ment of the digestive organs. This derangement produces deficient nutrition and assimilation. By assimilation I mean that process by which the nu* triment of the food Is converted into blood, and thence into the solids of the body. Persons with 1 digestion thus impaired, having the slightest pre- ? disposition to pulmonary disease, or if they take cold, will be very liable to have Consumption of the Lungs in some of its forms; and I hold that it will be impossible to cure any case of Consumption without first restoring a good digestion and healthy assimilation. The very first thing to be done is to cleanse the stomach and bowels from all diseased n mucus and slime, which is clogging these organs so that they cannot perform their functions, and then rouse up and restore the liver to a healthy action. For this purpose the surest and best remedy is | g Schenck's Mandrake Pills. These Pills clean the ! ? stomach and bowels of all the dead and morbid Jllme that is caasingdlsease and decay in the whole ystem. They will clear out the liver of all diseased bile that has accumulated there, and rouse it up tc a new anrl healthy action, oy woica naiumi uuu i healthy bile b secreted. Tlie stomach, bowels, and liver are thus cleansed I by the use of Schenck's Mandrake Pills; but there . qj remains in the stomach an excess of acid, the ! organ Is torpid and the appetite poor. In the bow- ! J eis the lacteals are weak, and requiring strength j and support. It is in a condition like this that Schenck's Seaweed Tonic proves to be the most valuable remedy ever discovered. It is alkaline, and'lts U3e will neutralize all excess of acid, making the stomach sweet and fresh; it will give per- j 1 manent tone to this Important organ. and create j m?a good, hearty appetite, and prepare the system pri for the first process of a good digestion, and von ultimately make good, healthy, living blood. ? After tills preparatory treatment, what remains A to cure most cases of Consumption is the free and persevering use of Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup. jq* The Pulmonic Syrup nourishes the system, purlfies the blood, and is readily absorbed Into the circulation, and thence distributed to the diseased lungs. There it ripens all morbid matters, whether in the form of abscesses or tubercles, and then assists Nature to expel all the diseased mat tor, in the form of free expectoration, when once it ripens. It is then, by the great healing and purifying > properties of Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup, that all ulcers and cavities are healed up sound, and my patient is cured. The essential tiling to be done In curing Consumption Is to got up a good appetite and a good digestion, so that the body will grow in fiesh and get strong. If a person has diseased lungs,?a cavity or abscess there.?the cavity cannot heal, the matter cannot ripen, so long as the system is below par. What Is necessary to cure Is a new order of r-, things,?a good appetite, a good nutrition, the body r < to grow in fiesb and get fat; Mien Nature Is helped, ! , the cavities will heal, the matter will ripen and be ID thrown oil' in large quantities, and the person 1 regain health and strength. This is the true and j only plan to cure Consumption, and if n person is very tad. if the lungs are not entirely destroyed, ; _ or even ff one lung is entirely gout-. If there is enough vitality left m the other to heal up, there is ,'jope. j I have seen many persons cured with only one sound lung, live and enjoy life to a good old ago. This is what Schenck's Medicines will do to cure | / Consumption. They will clean out the stomach, sweeteu and strengthen it, get up a good digestion, and give Nature the assistance she needs to clear the system of ail the disease that is In the lungs, whatever the form may be. It is important :;iat wnue using ncnrnct s oneui- j cines, care should be exercised not to take cold: j keep in-doors in cold and damp weather: avoid night air. and take out-door exercise only In a genial and warm sunshine. I wish It distinct:." understood that when I recomniend a patient to be careihl lr. regard to taking j cold, while using my Medicines,! do so for a special reason. A mar wlio has but partially recovered 1 from the pflect* of a had cold is far more liable to a relapse than one who has been entirely cured: J and it is precisely the same in regard to Consunip- ! tlon. So long as the lungs are not perfectly healed, I Just so long is there imminent danger of a full return of the disease. Hence it is that I so strenu- j ously caution pulmonary patients against exposing themselves to an atmosphere that is not genial and pleasant. Confirmed Consumptives' lungs are a I linvvt of sores, which tlie lea-st cliange of atomsplicrc will iuilame. The grand secret of my sttccess with my Medicines consists in my ability to subdue inflammation iu-itead of provoking it, as mnny of the faculty do. An intlau.ed lung wriri with safety to tlie patient, be exposed to the biting blasts of winter or the < biUinr wind/ of Kpriug or Autumn. It should he carefully shielded from I all irritating influences. Tlie utmost caution bhohid be observed in this pariicular, s* without it a cure under almost any circumstances is an impossibility. Tlie person should be kppt on a wholesome and nutritious diet, and all tlie Medicines continued until the body has restored to it tlie natural quantity ' of tiesh and strength. * I was myself cured by this treatment of the worst kind of Consumption, and have lived to get fat and hearty these many years, with one hang mostly gone. I have cured thousands since, and very many have been cured by this treatment whom I have never seen. rr About the First of October I expect to take posses- | sion of ni v new building, at the Northeast Corner of Sixth and Arch streets, where I shall be pleased to ,^f. give advice to all who may require it. Full directions accompany all my Remedies, so that a person in any part of the world can be leadlly cured by a strict observance of tlie same. J. H. SCHEXCK, M. IX, an Philadelphia.
