?&< fUjmMtan, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2?r 1871. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. Let another's passions be a lecture to thy reasons. Never insult misery, deride infirmity nor despise deformity. Men, like books, have at each end a blank leaf; childhood and old age. ( Suspicion and distrust are the greatest enemies to friendship. Do with trials as men with new hats? put them on and wear them until they be eome easy. The man who never made a mistt ke never made a discovery. "Was the Roman matron whose sons were jewels a mother of pearls?" "No, my child, the Gracchi were Cornelians." Why should the man who opens oysters and the man who cooks them both be admitted to holy orders? Because one's a i pryer and the other's a frier. "How did you learn that graceful attitude?" said a gentleman to a fellow leaning in a maudlin fashion against a post. "I have been practicing at a glass," was the reply. "John, I saw your cousin Isaac a few weeks ago, and he just received a terrible fall which cut a most horribie gash in his arm." "Ah, poor fellow; what did he fall on?" "Well, really, I forgot now, but it rather strikes me he fell on Tuesday morning." "Don't trouble yourself to stretch your mouth any wider," said a dentist to a man who was extending his jaw frightfully, "as I intend to stand outside during the operation." When a girl is kissed by her lover, what newspapers would she mention? "O, horrible!" exclaimed an elderly lady. "What a blessing we have nails on ours." A Leavenworth paper, in urging en- < Ii8tment in a Kansas regiment about to be i&'sed to fight the Indians, says: "The service will last for three or four month only, and will be a source of health, pleasure and profit to all who enlist. I As the steamboat Oregon was passing a , short tk?e since, a newly arrived Irishman, belonging to the celebrated O'ltegan s family, was heard to exclaim: "O-r-e g-o-n, oh, be jabbers! not four weeks in this country yet, and a steamboat named after me." "Manners," says the eloquent Edmond Burke, "are of more importane than laws. Upon them in a great measure, the laws depend. The laws can touch us here and ] there, now and then. Manners are what vex, or soothe, exalt or debase, by a con- stant, steidy, uniform, insensible opera- t! tion, like that of the air we breath in. ? They give their whole form and color to ?ur lives. According to their quality they aid morals; they supply them, or they totally destroy them." Honest and courageous people have very little to say about either their cour- 1 age or their honesty. Yl d THE CAUSE AND CURE OF CONSUTtPTIOJt ' ?? ?Oon.umntI*?r* ( doraniNL ? 1UC pi mini J W?U.7V V?4 VA/KSUUIJ/MVU W . .. ment of the digestive organs. This derangement produces deficient nutrition and assimilation. By assimilation I mean that process by which the no- " trlment of the food Is converted Into blood, and B thence into the solids of the body. Persons with ? digestion tbns impaired, having the slightest predisposition to pulmonary disease, or if they take o cold, will be very liable to have Consumption of ti the Lungs in some of its forms; and I hold that It will be Impossible to cure any 'tase of Consumption I without first restoring a good digestion and healthy I assimilation. The very first l.hing to be done Is to j cleanse the stomach and bowels from all diseased mucus and slirne, which Is clogging these organs so ^ that they cannot perform their functions, and then rouse up and restore the liver to a healthy action. For this purpose the surest and best remedy is a Schenck's Mandrake Pills. These Pills clean tha stomach and bowels of all the dead and morbid slime that is causing disease and decay in the whole I system. They will clear out the liver of all diseased 1: bile that has accumulated there, and rouse It up to 1 a new and healthy action, by which natural and 1 healthy bile Is secreted. c The stomach, bowels, and liver are thus cleansed by the use of Schenck's Mandrake Pills; but there I remains In the stomach an excess of add, the organ is torpid and the - ppetlte poor. In the bowels the lacteals are weak, and requiring strength and support It is In a condition like this that Schenck's Seaweed Tonic proves to be the most J valuable remedy ever discovered. It la alkaline, 1 and its use will neutralise all excess of add, mak- 1 log the stomach sweet and fresh; it will give per- i manent tone to this important organ, and create < a good, hearty appetite, and prepare the system I for the first process of a good digestion, and ultimately make good, healthy, living blood. After this preparatory treatment, what remains to cure most cases of Consumption is the free ' and persevering use of 8chenck's Pulmonic 8yrup. The Pulmonic Syrup nourishes the system, pari- 1 fies the blood, and is readily absorbed Into the 1 circulation, and thence distributed to the diseased lungs. There it ripens all morbid matters, whether in the fbrm of abscesses or tubercles, and then , assists Nature to expel all the diseased matter, in the form of free expectoration, when once it ripens. 1 It is then, by the great healing and purifying i properties of Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup, thai all ulcers and cavities are healed up sound, and my patient is cured. t The essential thing to be done in curing Con- i sumption is to get up a good appetite and a good i digestion, so that the body will grow in flesh and j get strong. If a person has diseased lungs,?a i cavity or abscess there,?the cavity cannot heaL the matter cannot ripen, so long as the system is below ' S,r. What is necessary to core is a new order of ' ings.?a good appetite, a good nutrition, the body to grow In flesh and set fat; then Nature is helped, , the cavities will heal, the matter will ripen ana be 1 thrown off in large quantities, and the person _ regain health and strength. This is the true and only plan to cure Consumption, and If a person is very bad. If the lungs are not entirely destroyed, or even If one lnng is entirely gone, if there is enough vitality left In the other to heal np, there is Iiope. 1 have seen many persons cured with only one sound lung, live and enjoy life to a good old age. ? This is what Schenek's Medicines will do to cure r' Consumption. They will clean out the stomach, sweeten and strengthen it, get up a good digestion, and give Nature the assistance she needs to clear the system of all the disease that is in the longs, T1 whatever the form may be. It is important that while using 8chenck's Medicines, care should be exercised not to take cold; keep in-doors In cold and damp weather: avoid , night air. and take out-door exercise only in a "J, genial and warm sunshine. 1 I wish it distinctly understood that when I recommend a patient to be caretol In regard to taking sn cold, while using my Medicines, I doso for a special tv reason. A man who has but partially recovered co from the effects of a bad cold Is far more liable to {u a relapse than one who has been entirely cured; and it to precisely the same In regard to Oonsump- ' tlon. So long as the lungs are not perfectly healed, "V Just so long to there imminent danger or a toll re- J" turn of the disease. Hence it to that I so streno- be ousiy caution pulmonary patients against exposing hii themselves to an atmosphere that to not genial and wi pleasant. Confirmed Consumptives' lungs are a w. mass of sores, which the least change of atmos- _ phere will inflame. The grand secret of my suecess with my Medicines consists In my ability to subdue Inflammation instead of provoking it, as many of the faculty do. An inflamed lung cannot, wi with safety to the patient, be exposed to tne biting blasts of winter or the chilling winds of Spring ag or Autumn. It should be caretolly shielded toom c|, all Irritating influences. The utmost caution should be observed In this particular, as without it . a cure under almost any circumstances to an lmposslblilty. lb The person should be kept on a wholesome and nutritious diet, and all the Medicines continued in until the body has restored to it the natural quantity wl of flesh and strength. wj I was myself cured by this treatment of the worst m kind of Consumption, and have lived to get fat and hearty these many years, with one lung mostly gone. I have cured thousands since, and very many have been cured by this treatment whom I cn have never seen. of About the Firstof October I expect to take posses- ec slon of my new building, at the Northeast Corner of Sixth and Arch Streets, where I shall be pleased to give advice to all who may require It. Full directions accompany all my Remedies, so that a person in any part of the world can be seadlly cured by a strict observance of the same. J. H. SCHENCK, M. D., fa FbiiAdElphlAi pc JOHN K.
