NATIONAL FORESTS WILL BE INCREASED Few Acres in South Carolina Includ ed in Thousands to Be Added Average Cost $3.23 Acre Washington, June 4.?Authoriza tion of additions of 100,930 acres to the Eastern national forests in Penn sylvania, Nev.r England and Southern Appalachians have been made by the national forest reservation commis sion, it was announced today. The commission also has recommended that $2,000,000 be set aside in the 1924 budget for further purchase of such lands. The average cost of the lands au thorized for purchase will be $3.23 an acre. Close to three-fourths of the total area, or 74,025 acres, is in northwestern Pennsylvania; 12,796 acres are in Virginia, 3,613 acres in Arkansas, 1,804 in Alabama, 1,027 in North Carolina, 631 in South Caro lina and 398 acres in Union county, Tennessee. Except in Pennsylvania these pur chases are merely increasing nation al forests and are largely to consoli date the government's holdings. ATHENS BANKERS ARE LOCKED IN VAULT Athens, Ga., June 3.?Hugh H. Gordon, Jr., president of the Com mercial Bank here, and Harry Hodgson, bank director and Univer sity of Georga trustee, spent thirty minutes behind the "bars" this morning.
