Harding, of the Federal Reserve Board, is out J1 with a statement criticising thep banks of the country for not making ' loans to farmers in order to assist - them in marketing their products, or 1 in holding them until a fair market ' may be found. ' This sounds to us like a joke. No- 1 body better than President Harding 1 " of the Federal Reserve Board knows s who is responsible for the present * conditions.' His acts since the repub- ( lican party went into power in re- 1 laxing to some extent the iron-bound rules of extending help to country banks has shown where the trouble lay. Criticism by high officials in the ' Wilson administration ' of his acts and proceedings in forcing the coun try to "deflate" leads to ^he conclu- c fc?/l 'Mr. Wilson been a well 1 man in the latter days of his admin- ? is tration, Mr. Harding would have 1 been halted in his efforts to pauper ize the farming interests of the coun try. . < Wte believe that bankers the coun- 1 try over, if they would tell the truth, i would test'fy that conditions under 1 Mr. Harding's board are intolerable. 1 It 4s stated that the much heralded > help, which was to come from the War Finance Board cannot be had < even now by the banks because af ter an application, with all the red 1 tape of a treaty of foreign alliance, < has been approved by the local com mittee, and then approved in Wash-' ington, it is sent to the Federal Ke serve Board for approval or action, and it Bleeps. Bankers complain that all kinds of "'i' dottings and "t" . crossings are demanded, which were never before demanded of them by banks with which they dealt before the creation of the Federal Reserve Board. Mr. W. P. G. Harding is entitled to j the credit of visiting upon the farm- j ing interests of this country one of the worst panics in the history of the country and his modesty shall not 1 ' be the occasion of giving credit for it to others, nor his false assertions either. UUk SUPREME COURT CASES \( Hamp William* Mutt Serve Sentence V of Court. Hamp Williams, who was tried in Abbeville county and convicted of manslaughter, must serve his sen- on tence, according to an opinion hand- th ed down, by the Supreme Court Wed- in nesday in which the verdict of the A1 circuit c<yirt was affirmed. Williams sh shot a man July 26, .1920 and the man mi was carried to the Anderson county te: hospital where he appeared to re- he cover and was then discharged. He an returned to Donalds and later con- te; tracted pneumonia, dying September ye 12, 1920. Whether or not the wounds inflicted by Williams caused his death sras the main question before the ower court. The presiding judge re fused a motion for a directed verdict n behalf of the defendant and an ippeal was taken. Joseph Johnson, who was convicted Df larceny in Abbeville, was ordered freed by the court in an opinion in cue. Johnson was alleged to have stolen a hog, but no evidence of any consequence was presented against iim and counsel moved for a direct id verdict of not guilty. This was de lied by the presiding judge and an ippeal was taken. The supreme court laid the verdict of not guilty should lave been directed and ordered the :ase back to Abbeville for a directed ferdict in behalf of the defendant.
