Iron and Textile Outputs Slowed

Washington, Dec. 8.?Continued
improvement in business conditions
in October, reflected notably in in
creased output of iron and steel and
textile products, and also a wide
spread stimulation in Ibuilding and its
related industries, was reported by
the department of commerce today
in its "survey of current business."
Wkile prices continued to decline '
slightly during October, the survey
showed the relative stability of prices '
as compared with preceding months
and the improved banking situation

lower interest rates, were cited as
conditions favorable to continued
improvement.
With the exception of metals, the
quantitative production in the impor
tant industries was shown by the sur
vey to be equal or greater than the
before-the-war average of 1913. '
Many lines, Including pig iron and
cotton and tobacco manufactories,
showing an increa^b of about one
third over the minimum production
for the current year. An increase of
70 per cent over the minimum was
reported in the production of bitu- 1
minous coal, while the output of
wheat flour, cement and wool pro
ducts was shown to have been ap
proximately double the minimum fig- 1
ures.

cabinet assembled 'here today to con
sider the treaty signed in London by
the Sinn Fein and British deegatesi
creating an Irish free_state. Its ac_
tion is'fraught with great signifi.

Eamonn De Valera and his counsel,

republican leader has thus far stead,

The public maintains the same j
semblance of indifference toward the j
agreen^nt noticeable when the news j
was fir^t received. The people seem j
generally satisfied (but refrain from j
expressing' their feelings in any out- j
ward demonstration appearing to be j
waiting for somebody to give the j
lead as if not quite certain what at- ,
titude to take. *
Republicans of the rank and file !
make no secret of thei^ dislike of1,
the oath involving fidelty .to the Brit-jj
ish sovereign and criticize among i'
other features of the treaty the ap- [!
pointment of a governor general and j
the financial clauses. Women's re-!
publican organizations are especially j
antagonistic toward whaj. they call a
"surrer?der to England."
Ulster's attitude on the plan is
awaited with interest here. The Uls
ter cabinet is considering the treaty
a copy sof which was sent to Premier |
Sir James Craig immediately after
its signature in London and Prime
Minister Llpyd* George's secretary is
in Belfast waiting to take back the
reply. Ulster, it is thought will not
enter the parliament of the Irish
free state at its conception but will
wait to see if it gives promise of
being satisfactory from her point of
vi^w.
