There has recently been printed a * book entitled "Historic Houses of South Carolina," which contains the 1 history and fable of the old Burt ^ house in Abbeville. The author is Mrs Harriette Kershaw Leiding of Char" leston, who has written other historB ical works giving intimate sketches of South Carolina. The price of this newest volume is $1.0. ) ___ Selling Wheat. 1 It is perhaps a good omen for 2 next year that the farmers of Abbeville County are buying -unusually * large quantities of seed wheat. Mer* chants who handle this grain do riot seem to be able to get it in fast r enough to supply the demand. The J farmers are evidently making pro1 vision to live at home and to have 1 "white bread" on the table, along with the "hoecake." Of course they 1 will also have a cane patch, plenty of potatoes and peanuts. 3 Show Windows Again. ^ There is nothing which adds so much to,the appearance of a store as an attractive show window. In \ fact, this is the only spot in the store where merchandise may reveal all of - its beauty. Some few merchants take 1 advantage of thj?. fact by clever Iay outs anj^novel Arrangements. Taste, i according to the trade magazines, des crees that window shall not be - crowded with a variety of articles. . Rather it should contain a few pieces, ; or one piece, emphasizing a single - feature of quality or style. Illustrat ing these points is, for example, the : a window of Rosenberg's store on the' - square. The design shows the fall J ? winter styles in women's footwear. J The color scheme, carried out in - cr^pe paper is pleasing as is the ar rangement of the shoes themselves. D -i-r ] Still Buying Wood ^ | Despite the vogue of coal as a fuel there is still some demand for firewood. Every day wagon loads of this " fuel are parked on the street, await|iing the chance buyer. It comes in th% | same variety as of yore, dry, green, | round, split, short, long. The rich | pine, in some sections called fat pine, El is not'so plentiful, it being a product a of the sand hills. After all, can the | gr'my grate eliminate the scene as | described in these lines: 3 | "We sat the clean-winged hearth 3 about 3 ... . a Content to let the North wind blow '. a In baffled rage at pane and door' " 1 While the great oak logs before *is f] beat 1 Back the frost^line with tropic .heat." if ; ' ??- - | HARDING CONGRATULATED | ON AMERICAN PROPOSALS a a Washington, Nov. 15.-?A stream | of delegations filed through the 21 roiiita Hnne'o tndnv PrtTltrratll 2] | Tf XAVWgv v***ww^ j - o ? | (lating President Harding and Sec| j retary of State Hughes on the Am| erican disarmament proposal, aj Senator Spencer, Missouri, brought i ( a delegation presenting 57,000 St. 1 Louis signatures urging disarma| ment.
