The Moore Hardware Company's store was entered by burglars early this morning and about $500 worth of joods carried away. Entrance was gained by removing the pane from 5ne of the rear windows. Just when ;he store was robbed is not known DUt Mr. A. K. Pruitt, who lives only i short' distance from the buildings ;hinks that it must have been some ;ime after two o'clock as he was up antil 1:30 with a sick child and did lot hear any noise during that time hat could lead to believe any :hing of that kind was going on. Four or five shot guns, a Winchester riflel a lot of cartridges and erun shells and wrenches, razors and pockit knives and numerous other articles were stolen from this store. The robDers attempted to break open the safe Dut were unable to do so. The handle pas knocked off, and an effort was made to saw off the combination at:achment, several hack saws being ruined in trying to carry out this at:empt. The safe was ruined and will probably be of no use to its owners leieafter. W. H. Federal agents learned a few days ago that a car containing 2,000 cases of whiskey was on its way from Kentucky to Chicago. The cargo is valued at $500,000. Major Dalrymple's men met the car as it entered the yards last night and quickly arranged the trap. From midnight until 9 o'clock this morning, there was nothing doing. Then a man drove up in a truck. And agents of the federal bureau sauntered out and asked if he had ]come after whiskey. The man said i he had and that he had the money to pay for it. He was arrested at 'once and taken to a box car that had been transformed into a tempo-, rary jail. A few minutes later another man ' drove up in a touring car, was asked ) the same question, gave the same' answer and loaded in the box-car jail. Treasury records charge the in- r creasc in the public debt to issue ox j certificates of indebtedness offered August 16, sold to cover payment to the railroads under the guarantee provisions of the transportation act. e Advances to the carriers against t probable deficits during the month were said by treasury officials to have reached nearly $160,000,000 and on this basis they figure there would have been a slight reduction in the public debt had not the earnings guarantee been in effect. The payments to the roads in August does not correctly indicate the amount to which they will be entitled) when a final accounting for the six months period over which the guar-J antee extended is made, it was added.' As a result, the drain on the treas-j nry probably will continue for sever-j al months, but officials believed it< would be possible to clear up alltransactions with the railroads with; the exception of the revolving fundi by the opening of the new year. The figures made public today show the redemption of approximately $2,500,000 in Liberty Bonds durini the last 30 days, .about $1,500,000 of which were of the third loan.
