After all, the saving of coal is but B i minor matter. The saving of hunan labor is the greatest considera;ion. That labor should be directid to agricultural pursuits in order ? ;o keep this country free from a de- jj dine at the close of the war. ti The United States government has t< nade the start toward aiding agri- o :ultural labor. The land loan bank a jromises much. But the nitrogen c ixation industry is equally neces- t1 iary. It is one thing for a poor man h ;o acquire land through the pur- y ihasing agency of money borrowed 2 :rom the government at a low rate e >f interest and on long term loan, b 3ut it is another thing to make that tl and productive without something to s; lid the labor of the hands. That b :omething is artificial fertilizer. The fi deal fertilizing agent is barnyard ti :ompost, but our farms, too sad to elate, have been almost depopu- f ated of live stock and this makes b t necessary to employ an artificial tl itimulant and plant food. o One of our principal artificial fer- c ilizers is phosphorous and another h s nitrogen. The latter is obtained ^ )rincipally from salt imported from h Uhile at a cost of approximately ~ 5100,000,000 a year to the people of his country. The government, by spending that imount in nitrogen fixation plants, :an save about $40 a ton or nearly >50,000,0000 a year, based on present nrices of Chilean nitrates. it would appear, then, that it is lot only the opportunity but the luty of the government to develop vater powers for this purpose, as veil as to encourage the develop- , nent of power to operate our trains ind our industries and thus save ;he supply as well as reduce the cost >f coal. * Proportionately as the artificial 3 production of nitrogen for fertilizer ( s increased, just so will the availibility be greater and with cheapened fertilizers the agricultural indus- ? ;ry of the country will be advanced.' Upon agriculture all progress and success depends.. SAGE TEA BEAUTIFIES AND DARKENS HAIR Don't Stay Gray! It Darkens So , Naturally That Nobody Can Tell. 1 . INTEREST IN BEEF CATTLE. j loll Weevil Stimulates Beef Cattle Industry. Clemson College, S. C., Jan. 29.? >uring the past year South Carona farmers have shown great inerest in the purchasing of regis sred stock and the establishment f herds for the production of beef s indicated by reports from the ounty demonstration agents. In wenty-two counties of the state 94 erds have been started in the past ear, and 96 registered beef bulls; 36 registered beef cows and heifrs, and 604 grade beef heifers have een brought into the state during he past twelve months. In these ame counties 2145 feeders have een brought in for beef. These = gures indicate a very decided trend Dward preparedness for the boll reevil. The farmers who are fortiying themselves in this way will e able to withstand the attacks of he weevil when he launches his ffensive on them. In these same ounties the progressive farmers ?/ ave built 52 silos to preserve wholesome, palatable food for their p erds of cattle. ^ d ABBEVILLE GREENWOOD MUTUAL INSURANCE ASSOCIATION.
