1 II V COUSIN DAVIS WRITES COUSIN PERCY Abbeville, S. C., Feb. 3rd, 1917. Dear Cousin Percy,?We miss you sadly. I have been pining for you all day. Things do not seem the since vou left. I hope you will (soon send me another telegram tell-1 ing me that you are coming again,} so does Cousin Wide. Not much has happened since you left. Judge Gary has come home frith a tale about killing two deer down near Charleston. Did you hear anything about it while you were down there or has your friend, Mr. Pinckney written you anything about it We have talked the matter over around town and there seems to be some disposition around town to think that the Judge has made a mistake, though he lives on our street. Col. Patrick Roche, who is A 1. ~ I one of our oldest men, ana wnu I runs a set-back college on the hill I near the Southern Railway, says that S the report sounds a good deal to I him like a story old man Sondley I put out here some fifty or sixty j I years ago. It seems that old man I Sondley went deer hunting down on I Little River, and late in the evenI ing he rode into town, both himself I and his horse being about out of 1 breath, saying that he had killed a I deer down on the river. Everyone I asked where was the deer, md the ft old man said that he left it on the river but he had a man working for I him named Will Hall, and that he I would send him for the deer. All I; his friends got ready to eat vinson I fwhich is deer ham) and everybody I was down town to meet Will when I he returned with the big game. At 1 last he drove up with one of Capers I Riley's young calves, which the old I man had shot. All we know is that I none of us received any vinson from 1 Charleston about the time the Judge I is said to have shot the deer, but on I account of the fact that he lives on our street people will make insinuations against the Judge. We have had a grand time this week?two big turkey suppers in town and I was at both of them. Dr. Harrison gave one and Uncle Jim the other. We had a grand time at both. Uncle Jim expected to deliver his inaugural address at his supper and had gone to a good deal of expense in getting a crowd present to hear it. Jim McMillan had practiced Uncle Jim up on how to deliver the speech and he had all the gestures made with the left hand. Well, ' Uncle Bill's throat got sore from using it so much while you were here (not from talking, nor laughing) and uncle Jim had to give him his room down stairs and go upstairs to sleep. Well last Friday ' morning Uncle Jim got up early to think over the talking points of his new mules which have just come in, and as he came down the stairway he thought he was at the bottom when he wasn't, and he walked right out into thin air, and lit on his left knee and his^left hand little finger. j? ; SHORTAGE OF EMI t. ; September, 1916 October, 1916 November, 1916 I December, 1916, (estimate January, 1917, not annour But large shippers say coi they are now. His speech had a good deal of footwork in it Jim said, and with his little fingei broken, he could not make the gestures as gracefully as Jim wanted so Jim said he would take charge oi the conversation at the supper anc talk on Foreign Relations, which h< did. Jim and I were the only one: which understood what he was say ing and we didn't know much abou it. Uncle Jim has had another sa( accident. Uncle Jim said, no, h< would not take a drink as he ha( sworn off, but Uncle Bill persuade< him to take the liquor in his moutl to hold it on the tooth, which h< tried to do but Uncle Jim said ever] time he tried it the liquor would ge by him just like a young mule ant ran down his throat, but he wouldn'" be outdone, he kept trying it again Dale Barksdale, who is one of Uncl< Jim's church-workers, was there anc when he saw uncle Bill trying tc cure the tooth he suddenly took th< neuralgia in every tooth in his mouth. Abraham Brown who has beer cousin Wide's butler for several years, has left the city. He has moved to Due West and joined the Seceders. He was born on Long Cane and brought up at Lower Long Cane where they sing the psalms more like they do at Due West than at any other place. Well, Abraham happened to get up to Due West one day in the "Kritter," several months ago, mind you, and he has beer wanting to move there ever since. He has now gone. I felt sorry for Wide when I saw him milking the cow this morning with the thermometer about six above zero. One reason I think Abraham left is thai Wide has missed a great many chick ens and turkeys sinde the street bad of him built up and he has blamet *1 1 ?Iaoo (Amu n* ADranam wim uic woo --? .. his fowls.
